Chapter 1

Jenny Mac.

Friday night, with a soft rain falling from the sky above the city of Edinburgh. Jennifer MacKay was walking home from her job in the office after a busy week being the new office manager. She had been promoted to her new position from her home town of Inverness. Walking along the street to her small apartment, she suddenly began to sense the strangeness of being alone and far away from the family and friends that she had grown up with. She suddenly realised that being single and at twenty-nine years of age, she was homesick. Her lip trembled, and tears filled her eyes. She stopped for a moment in the shelter of a doorway and pulled her coat tightly around her shoulders. The bright lights of the big city seemed cold and a little fierce to her now. She shivered with a chill down her back, stepped forward, and made the final effort to make it to her apartment, which she now called home.

Once, she had shut out the damp Edinburgh weather and changed out of her office clothes and into pyjamas and a dressing gown. Jennifer ordered a pizza online and sat watching banal TV. She felt safer now and not so homesick and miserable from her walk home. The whole weekend stretched out before her and the relief of not having to be the perfect office manager for the next 48 hours.

Three hours later, she was still watching the TV, and the remains of her pizza lay cold and dry in the cardboard box. She had opened a bottle of red chianti wine and was on her third full glass. The feeling of loneliness returned and she felt saddened that her dreams of promotion and big city life had now turned out not to be as exciting as she had initially thought. She opened up her laptop and began to search for friendship groups.

Scrolling through the various alternatives, one stood out from the rest. For no other reason than it was so unexpected. The site was listed as ‘Scottish Swingers’ It seemed such an odd thing to find, yet she was intrigued by the idea of it as a friendship site when it was a sexual meeting site. Nevertheless, she clicked on it and began scrolling through some online pages. She needed to create a profile to read more. So, ten minutes later, she had listed herself as ‘Jenny Mac’ with a brief profile and some content.

There was also a photo gallery where she could add a picture of herself. She held back adding that part to her profile. Instead, she scrolled through some of the other members’ profiles to better understand what she might add to her profile.

It was well past midnight before ‘Jenny Mac’ signed out of the website and went to bed. She lay half asleep thing about what she might add to her profile and what photos she would add. She thought about what she needed to do some shopping for on Saturday. A mask, pair of stockings, and she was going to add something else, but she fell asleep, which was the end of her Friday night, Saturday morning internet friendship search.
