Noon! The new home of Britney Saunders, shared with Clinton and Mindy Biles. Love triangle!
Clinton had laid awake half the night sorting out his emotions over witnessing the death of his fellow officer Herb DeWhitt. Given the day off to deal with the trauma only helped so much. Not even having his wife and lover sharing in giving him the best body massage ever, leading to oral sex on their part solved his concerns. When he agreed to join the Caretaker, police force he never imagined such brutality to go down in just one weeks’ time. A former security guard and tree cutter almost seemed favorable again. Less stress!
With one of his girls under each of his arms he was pinned down as they slept. His tears were withheld, but the option was there should they decide to share. Always the bull in strength, if not a heart of gold, he often resisted anything emotional. When he did lose it, he tried to be off on his own. Held down as he was currently, by choice, he gave up rest and carefully removed his arms from beneath Mindy and Brit. Instead of crawling over either one of them Clinton tossed his sheet aside and carefully moved along the center of their new Kingsize bed until he could escape.
Seated at the foot he paused a moment to get the feeling back in his arms. Slow gyrations to pop shoulders and loosen locked muscles he sighed and got up. A quick trip to the ensuite he took a healthy towering piss. Splashing water on his face after washing his hands he stared at the bathroom mirror.
“See you on the other side Herbie. Wish we had, had more time to get to know one another. I’ll do my best to look after Caretaker for you.” Still no tears! Tempted to take a shower he instead just needed fresh air. Going back into the bedroom he grabbed a pair of clean denim jeans and slipped them on. Socks and boots next, he decided to go shirtless around home. Why dirty up more clothing!
Quiet as a mouse he stepped out into the hallway and gently sealed the bedroom door. Aiming for the staircase he heard weeping coming from the spare bedroom where Alexis Roster was camping out, prisoner at her father’s request. “I bet she needs to take a leak.”
Shaking his head he walked to her door. There was no need to knock, it was left wide open. He peered inside to find her curled up in a ball atop her covers. Cuffed but in front of her for better comfort she saw Clint and rolled over so that he couldn’t see her cry. Normally, unable to keep her clothing on she actually kept a t-shirt on to sleep in. Shockingly she was covered in all the right places.
“You okay, Ali?”
“No!”
“Need to go pee?”
“I could have done that on my own.” True! She wasn’t chained to a bed post. Britney had given her a chance to behave, and Ali did. Bathroom in the hallway for her to use that door remained open as well for easy access.
“Why are you crying?”
“Herb!” Awww, hell! Now his heart sank. “I can’t believe he’s gone. I miss dad and grandpa too.”
“Dolan will be by before Oliver comes to get you. Heard from him?”
“Not yet! I hope he hasn’t changed his mind about us.”
“As much as it sounds wrong, knowing what he did to CC, for your sake I hope he’s genuine. You know your family loves you, you just make their lives hell.”
“I just ... want to be me. I love them too, but they want me to be everything I don’t want to be.” She dried her tears off on her bedding and tried to brighten up.
“Only keeping you safe.”
“Can I take these cuffs off? I swear I won’t run. I’m here until Ollie comes for me. I want to look and smell good for him.”
“Meaning a shower. Yeah, I’ll trust you. Seeing as how your emotions are, I wouldn’t want to be cuffed either. Just don’t make me regret this. Give me a sec I’ll grab the cuff key.” He left her and returned to his bedroom. Brit had the key in a small decorative vase by her side of the bed. Stealth mode he took the key and left the ladies to Mister Sandman. He grabbed his cell while he was at it, fully charged.
Sitting next to Ali on her bed he removed her cuff and tossed them onto the mattress. Before he could rise, she threw herself into him for a hug. Caught off guard he did console her sweetly. Tears were turning to coughing.
“That’s it. Get it all out.”
“That’s what she said.” Ali laughed under pressure. “Sorry!”
“All good! You want some breakfast, well, lunch, I guess. I’ll make you some eggs and toast while you shower up.”
“That sounds good. Anything has to be better than the canned ravioli I had last night.”
“You can let go of me now.”
“I just needed a hug. I wasn’t trying to seduce you. As hard as that is to believe.” She tried to smile.
“Surrre!” He winked and playfully tapped her in the chin with his fist.
“Police brutality. Don’t turn me on, I’m trying to behave.”
“You got no choice about that. Go wash up. Be in the dining room in thirty minutes or I eat those eggs.”
“K! Thank you, Clinton. Oh! And I’m sorry you had to see Herb ... yeah! Crying in the shower. Bye!” She climbed from bed and took her t-shirt off right in front of him and wiggled to the bathroom. He sat there until she was gone then looked down at his lap.
“Knock it off down there.” His dick did get nice and hard. Nope! Not going there! “I wonder what Lakshmi is doing?”
Before he could stand up his cellphone rang. Looking at the caller he quickly answered it. “Morning Dolan. Need me at the Shoals after all?”
“No! The press conference here at the courthouse is over. Mayor Topsail announced a few new additions to Caretaker thanks to Sanchez. He kept things brief. No trouble’s here but I just found out Nick dealt with a shooter over on the REZ. Victor Bonebury has it under control. Zera took the gunman down if you can believe that. Shadow filled me in. My troops out at Harbinger Shoals say things are chill.”
“Damn! Anyone get hurt on the REZ?”
“Only the gunman. From what Shadow told me he was blackmailed into firing on Newton Waterfall and the elders. Zera prevented a clean shot. Nick saw the guys wife get her brains blown out over the guy’s cellphone. Someone is definitely holding a grudge. It’s all on the FBI now, Shadow informed them.”
“So, I can lay low today. I was just about to make Ali lunch. I just woke up. She’s taking Herb’s death hard.”
“He was her godfather! Of course, she is.”
“No word from Oliver she says. Glad you gave her, her cell back just in case.”
“Tell Mindy I said thanks for dropping by the station to grab it. All of this paperwork is wearing me out. Between that and the press conference.”
“Glad to help if you need me.”
“Listen! I haven’t eaten since last night after I told dad about Herb. Why don’t you grab Ali and meet me at the diner, I’ll buy.”
“I can do that. Wish I had plates on my new Harley. Beautiful day it looks like.”
“You’re a cop. Ride the bike.”
“I won’t say no to that.”
“Under an hour.”
“We’ll be there.” Hanging up, Clinton went to the bathroom and stepped inside to see Ali showering behind glass doors. “Change of plans! Your dad just called he’s buying us lunch at Coastal Waiters. Get dressed and meet me in the garage. We’re taking my new bike.”
“Yessss! I can practice being a biker babe for Ollie.”
“CLOTHED!”
“Spoil sport!”
“That I am!” He closed the door. Going one last time back to his bedroom to grab a clean shirt he put it on but left it unbuttoned. Carefully moving from one side of the bed to the other he kissed Mindy first, then Brit. “Sweet dreams!” A minute later he received a text from Eloise Dyson.
“I just ordered you bike plates and registration. I got your belly rub, Bear.”
“Nice!” He simply texted back with, “You’re the best!”
Yes, she was!
Across town outside the courthouse Sheriff Dolan Roster prepared to drive off when his phone rang, this time. “Heavy-Feather!” With a sigh he answered! “Oliver!”
“Good day, Sheriff. I am on my way to pick up Ali. I just wanted your permission to claim her.”
“I hear the bike. Are you talking and driving at the same time?”
“I am! Write me a ticket.”
“You did good helping Grainger recently by rescuing Veronica Redmane. I’ll cut you a little slack. Just ... don’t let my kid down. Be good to her.”
“I will do my best.”
“Did you hear about the shooter?”
“Shooter? I did not!”
“You must have been on the road before it went down. Sanchez and Irene Amador saved Waterfall and the elders at the REZ conference. No one on the REZ was hurt.”
“I got lucky today. Mister Merrick let me, and my brother stay behind. He and the rest of our REZistence are driving to Charleston to pick up Crimson. Nodin does not want her in the middle of any continued war.”
“I can understand that. Tell you what! Meet me at Coastal Waiter’s in say forty minutes. I’ll buy you and Ali lunch. As much as I object to you two, I’m willing to give you a chance to prove yourself.”
“I will make her my top priority. ETA fifteen minutes out.”
“See you there. Oh! And let me deal with Caprice.”
“I will create no trouble for her.”
“Good to know! Clinton Biles is bringing Ali to the diner. You two can meet and go from there. She has things on my porch at home, I’ll see to it someone brings the boxes to her on the REZ.”
“Much appreciated Sheriff.”
“Dolan! NEVER call me dad.”
“I would not disrespect you further.”
“Forty minutes!”
“I will pull over and take a leak to kill time.”
“TMI!”
Dolan hung up on Oliver. Ollie had a good laugh over the dad comment. Dolan decided to go ahead and grab Ali’s boxes from his home and stash them in his car. It was the least thing he could do for her even after disowning her over her latest antics. He wanted his porch back!
Charleston, South Carolina! The former estate of Professor Tomas Sylver!
Just like everyone, after a sleepless night the current occupants suffered a bad case of droopy eyes and vivid yawns. Even with FBI units and local police force watching the estate it was useless trying to catch any shuteye. Infiltration at every turn had all involved looking at one another out on the perimeter. No one trusted anyone until they could.
Seated in the dining room forensics photographer Maxine Park, Crimson Merrick, and Lillian-Dawn Bearpaw ate a late breakfast of cereal and fruit as provided by Special Agent Don Monroe himself to be certain nobody was poisoned. At the moment Don only trusted Maxine and Agent McKenna Grace. Inactive at the moment Agent Elijah Ramirez was by far his go to guy. He felt lost without Eli to back him up.
“Long night!” Don returned after briefing his troops, stunned by Maxine’s back tattoos as her purple satin robe slipped from her shoulders. “I had Lloyd Halifax united with his family and moved nonstop all night long. I had more mice units spreading out in all directions just to prevent any bad guys knowing where they end up. Out of my hair until he goes to trial.”
“How is Agent Ramirez?”
McKenna stretched vividly; her uniform shirt unbuttoned a bit for comfort did not go unnoticed. No bra to feel comfortable she hadn’t even realized her error. While an agent she was technically off duty and playing babysitter.
“He’s out of surgery and stable. Unless anyone ambushes the hospital, he should make a full recovery. I’ll keep you posted. Miss Merrick? I had a call from your father. He requested your extraction and is coming up from the REZ with bodyguards and your girlfriend to drive your fancy Jag back.”
“Jasmine is coming for me?” She brightened up. “I can go? Wait! Nick asked me to stay with Lillian until she heads back.”
“I will be fine.” Dawn reached over to hold her hand. “Go before anything else prevents it.”
“I’ll look after Bearpaw.” Maxine chimed in! “McKenna and I won’t leave her side.”
“Maybe I should give you a real badge Park. You and Grace can be partners.” Don smirked! “After your martial arts stunts, I think you have what it takes to be qualified.”
“I would have to go to Quantico, wouldn’t I?”
“Probably, unless there is some miracle to bump you up ahead of the game.”
“AHEM!” A voice rose over a house speaker. “Miracle worker on standby.”
“Shadow!” Don sighed! “You don’t miss a beat do you.”
“Well, actually! I only caught that miracle part. Nicky knows some people in high command who can make judgment calls. But let’s talk about that another day. I only interrupted you to inform you of events near Caretaker. Your people cleaned house at the Shoals and are on their way home. However! I redirected one of your units to the REZ to collect a new body. Sorry if I stepped out of line but they were on the way.”
“New body? Fill me in and why haven’t my people called. It’s not up to you to be any go-between.”
“I understand that, Donny.”
“Don! Only my parents call me Donny. I’ll make calls shortly but go ahead and fill me in on what you know.”
“First off! Bearpaw? Your family is perfectly fine. A lone gunman took aim at the elders during a press conference. Nicky and Irene Amador took him down before anyone got hurt. From what we gather the gunman was being blackmailed into an assassination attempt. Nicky seems to think this was a warning more than a hit. The gunman’s name was Virgil Cummings a Channel 15 cameraman. Before he died of a cyanide tooth like those assassins at the Shoals, he admitted he only did the hit to save his wife held by the enemy, whomever they are. Nicky answered Virgil’s phone and saw a video of Virgil’s wife Ann getting her brains blown out. Tragic! That video disappeared off of Virgil’s phone just that fast.”
“Who can do that?”
“I could, but of course I’m not the enemy. There are hackers out there who can be miracle workers in their own profession.”
“Right! Any way of tracking the caller?”
“I’ve tried. No go, I’m afraid. I will say this, they are thorough.”
“So, Ann Cummings will be found along some deserted highway.”
“If ever! Acid trip comes to mind if you know the tricks of the trade. The video was too fast for Nicky to identify any possible clues outside of the caliber of the gun. No way did Ann survive that.”
“Channel 15 is here in Charleston. I’ll have my people look over camera footage of Virgil before he left for Caretaker.”
“Way ahead of you, Don. Watch the TV.” She turned a wall-mounted television on across from the dining table. Images ignited showed Virgil on his phone talking then looking horrified. “My guess this is when he found out they had Ann.”
“Agreed! Where is he going now?”
“Parking lot. There was no camera on the blindside unfortunately, but if you notice before he gets into the van to drive he stashes a gun behind his pants. It’s easy enough to tell that he’s never held a gun before.”
“Looks pale! There’s his reporter.” He watched them drive off. “Catch any tails over city cameras?”
“None! Whomever planted that gun for him is incognito as well. Seeing as we have no clue when that gun was stashed it is hard to tell who might have left it for him.”
“Keep looking! I’ll have the Bureau cross check as well. Let’s establish when his wife might have been abducted and get an idea on vicinity between where she was and at the time of her murder. Cyanide tablet you say. When did he get that. With the gun?”
“Well, he did have a dentist appointment the day before. I’ve been digging to see who he had prying his mouth wide.”
“Which means his wife had to have been taken before he went to work or just after. Check his neighborhood for any possible front door cameras to see if strange vehicles show up. Including him leaving for Channel 15.”
“On it! Bearpaw? Nicky says finish up at the campus as fast as you can and get home. Nick requested Ms. Park drive her home. Agent Grace as well, if you can spare them as bodyguards until back in his possession.”
“Done! Keep me in the loop, Ms. Shadow.”
“Until Nicky pulls me off. I’m at your disposal until things are better suited in your hands.”
“Appreciated, if not quite protocol. I’ll accept your help and keep you on the downlow. It’s the best I can offer.”
“All I need! Be careful out there.”
Dyson concluded her call, and the TV switched over to the Channel 15 news. Covering their loss the only way they could, Virgil Cummings was made to look like the bad guy until further notice. Damn sad! No mention of his wife the late Ann Cummings of course. That part of the story had not been leaked. God rest her soul! United with Virgil!
“Let me check in on my retrieval team. You ladies sit tight. Oh, and McKenna, button up. I’m not Sanchez, I won’t let you expose yourself like Miss Bearpaw.”
“Shit! I forgot. Sorry, Monroe.”
“I won’t write you up for misconduct.” Turning, he headed out the front door to make his call.
What a week!
Coastal Waiter’s Diner! Caretaker’s only diner!
“Hey, beautiful! How about a piece of pie?”
“As if I’ve never heard that one before.”
