Harbinger Shoals!

Opal Savage was still cleaning up the mess down in the caves as ordered by her commanding paycheck Nick Sanchez. With all of the law enforcement currently around it was not as easy as Nick might have wanted. She had no choice but get her nails dirty and cut the unretrieved Deadman’s remaining body parts up into smaller more manageable chunks. After cutting heads off of mercenaries what was a bit more bloodshed to a trained killer. Not that she was proud of herself, she was trying to do good these days after years in the field. As a bounty hunter it used to be much cleaner. Not so much of late.

With nightfall at hand, she had hefty two-ply body bags ready for transport and was now cleaning up as much blood on the cave walls and flooring at she could amidst the rubble. Luckily, the roof and foundation withstood much of the blast. With only the Caretaker police force there during the explosion this secret was under wraps. Pretty much only Sheriff Dolan Roster, Officer Randall Koones, and newly appointed officer Clinton Biles were aware of a blast but didn’t exactly know where. Only Dolan knew of the tunnels. A waiting game, Opal would dispose of the body shortly. With an ocean in your backyard, it made things easier for certain.

“At least I didn’t need to deal with that Coast Guard guy who fell down in the barn hatch. Roster had him hauled to the morgue with the hole closed over to prevent knowledge it exists. Biles is biting his tongue saying the guy fell from the loft and killed himself accidently. I do feel for the Bear; he was close to that DeWhitt guy. Let’s just hope his conscience doesn’t get the best of him. Nick seems to think he’s loyal, but we barely know the guy. The lady cops were out on the road, so they didn’t know how it all went down. What a tangled web we weave.”

As Opal kicked back in the darkness, she heard a chittering sound and perked up. Silencer in hand she used night vision goggles to witness the best assassin in the business show up. “Hey there, Hamburglar. Come back to inspect my work? Our work!”

The raccoon paused, sniffed, then moved in to curl up next to Opal’s hip. “You sure are a friendly one. Just don’t go pulling my triggers like you pulled the pin on this guy’s grenade.” Snoring, she felt safe enough to actually pet him. “Reminds me of my cat Aretha back in grade school. Sleep well, Burglar.” She too set her watch to beep in an hour and closed her eyes. She would wake up and her partner in crime would be gone.

Caretaker!

“There’s dad’s truck at Olive Longtree’s house. If he’s here, he might not have picked up the war at the Shoal’s over his scanner. I hate to bust in on them, but he needs to know about Herb.” Pulling up on the street Dolan Roster shut his cruiser off and made the walk in the dark up to Liv’s front door. Doorbell rang she answered it in her bath robe.

“Dolan! Is everything alright?”

“Dad must have his phone off. I tried calling him.”

“Blame me!” She winked at him. “Momma needed undivided attention.”

“Lucky devil.” He tried to smile. “Listen! I need to talk to him, it’s urgent.”

“Let me go tell him to put his pants back on.”

“Sorry! You know I wouldn’t come calling unless it was important.”

“Is it Alexis?”

28981-76-ch-76-04-dolan.jpg

“For once, no!”

“Well, that’s good I suppose. Have a seat I’ll nudge him. He fell asleep on me. TMI forgive me.” She giggled! “Sit tight!”

“Thanks, Olive!”

Leaving him Dolan did sit down in a recliner but was ready to pounce back up once his dad arrived. Hearing voices, he knew Albert was groggy. It took five minutes before Albert stepped out of the bedroom in his pants and plain white t-shirt.

28981-76-ch-76-05-al.jpg

“What’s the wake-up call about, Son?”

“Herb DeWhitt is dead.”

“What? How?”

“Line of duty. Harbinger Shoals was attacked by I presume mercenaries sent to destroy Raymond Scott’s body. Herb and Biles were pinned down in the barn and Herb didn’t make it out. Biles took out the assassin though. Nick and his sidekick Opal polished off the others. It was downright scary, Pop.” Olive bringing coffee cups joined them.

“I overheard. If you need to steal Albert, I understand.”

“No! He’s fine here. I just knew dad would have resented me for waiting until tomorrow to tell him. He needed to hear it from me.”

“Thank you, Son. I’ll drive over and break the news to Herb’s parent’s early morning. Living in a nursing home it’s closed up for the night.”

“Right! Their knowing you better than me it would go over easier. I’m tied down to the Shoals until the FBI exhumes Raymond Scott’s body and turns it over to the REZ. The REZ also lost Ben Squatting Wolf.”

“A darn shame. Ben was promising.” Olive pouted! “I knew him as he grew up when I lived on the REZ. I’ll call his family in the morning and offer our condolences.”

“Just do me one favor, Olive. Let’s not mention mercenaries. Sanchez and I agreed to keep this as tight-lipped as possible until the FBI finishes their investigation.”

“Say no more, as will I.”

“Thanks!”

“Where’s Alexis?”

“Still with Mindy Biles and Britney Saunders as far as I know. I’m honestly too weary to care. I sent Clinton on home, so I’ll text him and ask then leave it go.”

“Oliver still coming to get her tomorrow?”

“It has been two days. If he does, he does.”

“I’ll personally check on Ali each time I go to the REZ.” Olive patted Dolan on the arm. “The Heavy-Feather boys will respect me.”

“You might be the only one they respect. I’ll stay out of it until Oliver hurts Ali. Don’t question me after that.” He sighed heavily! “Get some sleep, Lovebirds.”

“You too, Son. Call me if you need help. I’ll leave the antique store closed for a few days.”

“Now that you mention that. Is there anything at all you missed when we discovered Raymond Scott’s skull in that trunk?”

“The skull belonged to Raymond?”

“Evidently! Ivy McDaniel did a DNA sample on it. It’s a match to the body.”

“Sweet Jesus! Now I feel like I owe the REZ an apology.”

“You had no idea until Sanchez opened the trunk.”

“No! All I recall about the trunk was I bought it in Ridley at an auction house. I remember Alexis’s whining about carrying it.”

“I’ll give the auction house a call and see who sold the trunk. Surely, they keep receipts and records.”

“Want me to do that?”

“No! Let me do my job. I might grab CC and drive over just to clear my head. Have a good night.”

“Not much sleeping after the news.”

“I’ll wear him out.” Olive winked!

“Time for me to go.” Dolan chuckled lightly! “Paperwork calls. I’m still waiting on Nick to tell me I can cut loose Irene Amador. Zera, that is! I can’t hold her forever.”

“Still no clue where this Zera came from?”

“Nick wants her to be checked out over in Cordoba for brain damage. Thing is, she’s stubborn and acting fine. To be honest she has never been this energetic. The Irene we knew just doesn’t exist anymore.”

“Keep me posted!”

“Yep! Night folks!”

Dolan Roster let himself out. Before he drove off, he shot a glance back at the house to witness Olive remove her house coat. From the waist up he saw only flesh. Not bad for an old woman! Slight sag but firm! Observing her go down on his dad Dolan flared his eyes. “That’s certain to relax him. Oh, to be young again. Enjoy, Pops!”

Shaking it off Dolan hit the road.

Marvin’s Pub! The only bar left in Caretaker. Hole in the wall. Literally!

“Don’t go blowing your whole paycheck, Este.”

“Drownin’ me sorrows, Minerva.”

28981-76-ch-76-06-drunk.jpg

“We heard about your house burning down. Is Irene doing, okay?”

“Who be Irene?” He scoffed and tilted back his latest shot of bourbon. So much for sobriety! Nice try, Esteban! “As ye likely heard, I tried to kill her. Which be a lie, I slapped her around and left. I had no idea what happened after until I be arrested. Think of me what ye will, I accept me fate.”

“Drinking so much won’t help.” The ginger frowned at him. Cutest freckles ever! Crazy tattoos as well!

28981-76-ch-76-07-minerva.jpg

“What else have I to do? I live in a boat on land with me cat Gilligan. Me job is on borrowed time due to me car gone missing so often. Lost Irene and now I found out me daughter is not me daughter. Refill!” He tapped his glass on the bar.

“Last call, Este. You know my dad would kill me just serving you. Lucky you, he’s been out on the water marlin fishing.”

“I appreciate ye, Sweet Minerva. Cash only, I’ll settle up me past tab when I can.”

“Good! It’s a slow night, nobody around to talk to so, I’m feeling generous.” He was indeed the only person in the bar. Hearing of shootouts about the area the populace was staying in at least tonight. “You hear about that crazy stuff at Harbinger Shoals?”

“Please donae bring up that Sanchez, he took me ... Irene’s daughter. Forgive me tears, Lass. I’m only now learnin’ some harsh truth.”

“So, wait! Midnight really isn’t your daughter?”

“Irene be not herself. I likely be to blame and I will relinquish me marriage with grace. Tis’ the least I can do for years of... “ He closed his eyes as Minerva Robinson poured that one last drink. She even poured herself one. Hearing his sorrow and regret she found his conversation, his admissions enlightening. Shocker! Este was normally quite the asshole. “Nay! It appears she be a Bearpaw.”

“Bearpaw? Where have I heard that name.”

“Samuel Bearpaw. Irene was his girl before she and I met.” A sip to savor his final shot he conserved. “It appears she was cheating on me in our youth.”

“Well, from what I gather about you, can you blame her? You cheated also, right?”

“Aye! Me mistakes be catchin’ up. What about ye, Minerva? Still single?”

“I am! And don’t you dare ask me out.” She chuckled! “I just haven’t found myself anyone worthy. This dump of a town has nothing to offer. I’m only here because of dad. After mom passing, he has no one else but me.”

“Daisy was a nice ole’ gal. To Daisy?” He lifted his glass. Sharing a light tap they polished off their shots.

“Mom would honor you with one more.” A pour, he was grinning. “LAST, LAST CALL!”

“Ye be a gem.”

“Closest thing to any rock on my finger.” She chuckled! “So, you and Irene are on the outs permanently?”

“She be wantin’ a divorce. As I said she be not herself.”

“Didn’t I hear some woman tried busting you out of jail?”

“Nothin’ escapes Caretaker.” He sighed! “Aye! I shacked up with the daughter of the Devil himself.”

“I thought that was you. The devil that is.”

“Nay! Illegitimate son, I be.”

“Funny! So, how is Irene not herself?”

“I suspect when I struck her before the fire I rattled her head. Her attitude is ... no longer forgiving. Let us just say, no longer would I care to spar with her.”

“Well, you shouldn’t fight anyway. I know I’d have kicked your ass.”

“Kickboxing trophy.” He pointed at a brass trophy behind the bar that Marvin always bragged about. “I recall the day ye father added that to the decor. He was proud of ye.”

“Still is! I’m a little rusty, that was five years ago. He gave me a raise to be his bouncer. You should know, I’ve escorted you out a few times when you got belligerent.”

“Aye! I recall me bruised knees from hittin’ the sidewalk.”

“You deserved it.”

“I donae disagree. I ... intended to remain sober until I found out about Midnight. Hearing that, I had nothin’ to keep me sober.”

“I don’t buy that. Cleaning up your act takes time. Let’s you and I agree to say this Last Call is your calling. No more drinking after this. Your money can best be used to find a new home. A new life. Maybe even a new girl.”

“New girl ye say.” He again closed his eyes and thought of Wanita Bearpaw. Tempting! She did feel ... right! Even if it was a hate fuck in a way. Revenge against Samuel. “Perhaps! One day!” His eyelids heavy, Esteban stood up. “Time to bleed me camel.”

Watching him teeter away toward the bathroom Minerva just knew she had served him more than she should have. “He’s in no condition to drive. Ugh! Why me? HEY! Don’t miss the toilet!”

A silent wave over his shoulder Este vanished into the John.

Aspen, Colorado! Earlier in the day! Lunchtime on the slopes!

“All better now, Lover?”

Marcus Jericho returned to his table after excusing himself to have a meltdown over business dealings gone bad. Namely, the assault on Harbinger Shoals and the chaos he set in motion up in Charleston, South Carolina. His mercenaries failing him in destroying the remains of Raymond Scott had him on pins and needles.

He never should have directed Nick Sanchez to the area in search of a retirement home. His old war buddy was closing in on the many secrets he had left behind. That pissed him off. Cooled off now, he forced himself to smile at his girl Alice Martinez aka Blades. A fellow merc with one hell of a body. One who had no past to speak of, her life was completely off the radar across the world. Well, nothing to write home about because that was forbidden. Daddy’s orders!

“Yes! My apologies for making a scene. I ... lost a good sum of money in that latest venture.” He spoke louder, knowing the people at the next table over had heard his outburst earlier. Time to be convincing! Looking to his right at the two couple’s Marcus put his palms up. “Forgive my behavior. Please, allow me to buy your lunch.”

“You don’t have to do that. Offer appreciated! I’m Sheldon, my wife Tilly.”

“Marcus! You’ve undoubtedly met Alice.”

“Yes!” Tilly smiled! “She was just telling us that they found a dead body out on the mountain.”

“Ah! Yes, such a tragedy.”

The knowledge had not even been made public yet. Alice was viciously proud of her earlier kill. Marcus however was not happy that she loved to brag in small doses. It always created troubles for him. If she wasn’t the sexiest bitch alive with the ability to keep up with all of his talents he might have dumped her long ago. Knowing more about Alice than she herself knew kept her at his side. If he could only train her to behave. A family trait it seemed! “Shant we not, discuss such morbid things before we eat?”

28981-76-ch-76-08-marcus.jpg 28981-76-ch-76-09-blades.jpg

“Of course!” Tilly apologized! “So, Marcus! What is it you do for a living if I might ask?”

“Stock market! Trader and subsidiaries. I buy properties and reinvigorate them on occasion. Yourselves?”

“Now that we have in common.” Sheldon chuckled! “Tilly and I run a realty in South Carolina.”

“South Carolina? Truly? I own property along the coast. What part of the state?”

“An old coastal town by the name of Caretaker. I’m sure you’ve blinked and passed by it.”

“Now this is the smallest of worlds. I own a beach house in Caretaker.”

“No way!” Pamper Rose giggled, then sang “It’s a small world after all.” Her flamboyantly bimbo tone had Marcus staring at her. Not so much at her bubbly attitude but at her monstrous cleavage. Very nice! Alice eying Marcus kicked his shin under the table. Funny, because Pamper’s man Jack kicked Pamper’s foot as well to shut her down. “Sowwy!”

28981-76-ch-76-10-pamper.jpg

“Hold up!” Sheldon narrowed his eyes. “Do you by chance know a Nick Sanchez?”

“Oh, yes! That old soldier and I go way back. He’s staying at my beach house until he can find a property.” He knew of Harbinger Shoals of course, but played coy.

“We just sold him a two-million property. That’s how we afforded this vacation. Nick even flew us out here on his private jet.”

“That sounds exciting. Marcus owns three jets.” Alice sat her martini aside. “We just arrived here ourselves from Lisbon. I hail from Spain, but reside in Portugal.”

“I’ve always wanted to visit Spain and run with the bulls.” Jack chuckled!

“I love riding bulls.” Pamper hopped up and down in her seat. Marcus was certainly enjoying her. Alice was ready to draw a blade until Marcus slyly reached over and held her hand. He could feel her pulse quicken. Under his magic touch she did calm herself. Demonic whore!

“Will you settle down. Quit making a scene.” Tilly pointed at the buxom blonde.

“Bully!” Pamper razzed Tilly then wagged her tongue at Sheldon. “Bouncy! Bouncy!”

“Oh, Dear God!” Tilly was ready to fake an aneurism. It was her turn to kick Sheldon to keep him from antagonizing the bimbo masseuse.

“I haven’t spoken to Nick since his birthday. Brief call! I believe he was still looking at that point. I really need to fly down there and clean house, it’s been years since I even aired that place out. At least Nick made use of it. How is the market down there these days? Two million you say.”

“That was for a rundown property called Harbinger Shoals.” Sheldon provided info. “To be honest Tilly and I were ready to pack it in. Selling anything in that area is lousy. The coast is all it has going for it. I will say this; Nick is certainly bringing life to the area.” Fair trade, Marcus thought to himself. He preferred bringing death to its shores.

“Wonderful! I’m glad I could convince him to check out the location. He deserves a chance to settle down. We’ve both been through hell for years.”

“Were you in the military with Nick?”

“Indeed! Memories good and bad I’m afraid. Much I cannot even speak of. It was me that sold him on the stock market and made him rich.” Partially true!

“Then I guess we should thank you for sending him our way.”

Lunch arriving conversation waned a bit. Once finished the belching began. Farting in Sheldon’s case. Tilly was beet red smelling him until Marcus let loose on his own and chuckled. Jack was next in line. Alice simply waved her napkin at them. Toro! Toro! It was a red napkin. Running afoul with the bulls in this case.

“Well! The venison gets me every time.” Marcus sighed! “I think I need a nap now. Perhaps, I’ll pay you a visit in Caretaker here soon. It is long overdue and I really would like to see what Nick is doing down there.” Alice placed her hand on his lap and slyly rubbed the length of his massive penis. Long and overdue had stimulated her. Down there also sounded promising. Nympho! Pamper Rose could relate!

“I guess the slopes are off the table with that dead body they found.”

“I imagine so.” Marcus grew erect. Alice knew it wasn’t her that excited him, it was the kill. Which is why she so loved turning him on that way. “Might I ask you all a favor?”

“What’s that?” Sheldon rubbed his swollen belly.

“Let me surprise ole’ Nick. Might we keep our running into one another a secret a while longer until I can free up my schedule.”
