Charleston, South Carolina!

Multiple cars vacated FBI Headquarters! Six identical rides with tinted windows to be precise. All were there to confuse the enemy out to eliminate a certain traitor Lloyd Halifax who was their sole witness and bad guy at the moment. His partners in crime dropped dead by cyanide poisoning were of little use and their personal data scrubbed by some outside hacker. Lloyd’s distraught wife and sons were placed in FBI care just moments ago.

Short notice learning of her husband’s crimes had her in such an emotional state that the agents literally had to cart her off for her own safety. Her sons in school were just as swiftly removed but with less of a struggle with the principal offering guidance. For now, they were safe. Lloyd himself was coming to grips with his past, present, and likely future.

A no contact order amongst cars that might tag which one carried Lloyd was enacted. Hackers with serious talent could easily trace voices and certain words spoken simply through personal cellphones. FBI or not, nothing was ever full proof. Security their ass!

Spreading out across the city for various locations of safehouses all of them managed their destinations. The particular car transporting Lloyd pulled into a landlocked lighthouse along Charleston Harbor, right on the Atlantic Ocean. A careful extraction indoors where there were no windows Agent Elijah Ramirez and McKenna Grace along with two other agents kept the man company. McKenna the only woman, one too gorgeous to ignore dealt with eyeballs and testosterone checking her out every two minutes. Ramirez at least set his agents straight.

“Cosner! If I see your eyes stripping McKenna one more time I’m sending you up to the crow’s nest.”

“Sorry, Sir! Sorry, McKenna.”

The woman simply frowned and made herself comfortable. Taking off her FBI issue jacket was not helping, her tight button-down blouse bursting at the seams over her breasts. Some things simply could not go unnoticed, even for Ramirez. He too apologized and made some coffee.

Seated next to a cooperating and miserable Lloyd who was allowed to go without cuffs, McKenna turned on the provided sofa to face him, one leg propped on the cushion. “Just try and relax. Let’s hope we made it here without a tail of any kind. From what I hear this place has jamming devices installed so that we can speak freely.”

“I swear I don’t know who is behind any of this. I was only a courier. My calls were distorted voices telling me my mission, where to deposit the info and I got paid. Simple as that. To my knowledge Deidre Carpenter and I were the only ones on the take. I still ... still can’t believe she’s dead.”

“Obviously, whomever you worked for doesn’t like leaving tracks behind.”

“Yeah, but we survived the other times we accepted money for jobs. I’ll even tell you what those jobs were if it helps.”

“Our personal guardian angel seems to have sorted that out for you.” Elijah stood over Lloyd to his left. “Good hackers, bad hackers! That seems to be the name of the game. Dare I say it, let’s hope the good ones are smarter than the adversary. Look, Lloyd, regardless how stupid you were to do what you did; I’ve known you a good long while. I see a soul even if it is tainted by greed.”

“Thanks, Eli! I don’t feel deserving of that but I do appreciate that. Trust me, I don’t mind paying for my crimes as long as my family is safe and taken care of.”

“I’ll see to it they get at least a portion of your pension. You will definitely do time, but your cooperation should lessen the terms.”

“If I live to enjoy freedom again.”

“One day at a time.”

“One hour at a time.” Lloyd sighed! “Are you certain my family is safe?”

“Honestly? Knowing who to trust these days makes it all that much harder on the good guys. We established a no contact order between us all so that is hindering knowledge. Just say your prayers, Lloyd.”

“I wonder how Maxine is doing?”

McKenna looked tense. In the short time of knowing one another Miss Grace and Miss Park had become good friends. While not an official agent Maxine Park was a valuable asset. Her actions earlier in the day were right out of a John Wick movie. Her assist would not go unnoticed by the agency, sadly, by the enemy whomever they were. Sent by Nick Sanchez to play bodyguard over Lillian Dawn Bearpaw and Crimson Merrick seemed like a simple enough job but again if the enemy sought revenge the Korean cutie might bring the bad guys to her. It was a risk that Nick was willing to take. Baiting hooks was his specialty.

“Hard telling! We can’t jeopardize our positions so she’s on her own. Whatever happens to her is on Sanchez. Sorry to sound cold McKenna but we have our orders.”

“Understood! I have faith in her abilities.”

“She’s definitely more than a shutter bug. Makes me wonder if the Bureau even knows her history. Hell, Sanchez and his people might know more about her life than we do.”

“Which is pathetic on our part.” Ivan Cosner chimed in. “How can we be so careless.”

“Our enemies get smarter by the day. I know I bit your head off earlier when you eyeballed McKenna but why don’t you go up topside and get a visual of our surroundings. Just be careful not to be seen.”

“On it!” Ivan found the spiral staircase up and hit the steps with stride. The second of four Agent Perry Larkin found munchies in the small kitchen but stayed close to the conversation. Ramirez noted Larkin glancing a bit too much. At first he thought it might be due to McKenna, but it seemed as if he were watching Ramirez more.

“Everything alright, Agent Larkin?”

“Jitters is all. This is my first guard duty.”

“Just relax! We have each other’s back. Any Cheetos in the cupboards?”

“Lays potato chips.” Now he smirked at McKenna.

“You had better not be fantasizing about me.”

“What? Because I said Lays? Are you sure that you’re not jittery too?”

“Cool as a cucumber. And don’t even picture its uses.”

“That’s enough, Grace! I don’t think Larkin was ... yeah, he probably was. Less perversions, more prepping for the worst.”

“Right! I apologize McKenna. No offense but I definitely could think of worse agents to be confined with. Just saying!”

“No sleep for me tonight!” She rolled her eyes. “I close my eyes I’ll be pawed up.”

“Not on my watch!” A mounted 45’ television was turned on by Ramirez, using a remote. The local News was already divulging a released statement concerning the assassins taken out by Grace and Park. “Yeah, let’s just show faces.”

“And sweet behinds.” Larkin chuckled then threw his palm up defensively. “I’ll shut up now.”

“Go upstairs with Cosner before I slap you upside the head. Take him some chips.”

“Yes, Sir!” Perry like Ivan took the stairs. Now he and Cosner could chat about McKenna. Young blood in the FBI they were still a tad childish.

“Unreal!”

“I’m used to it, Elijah. All through the academy I was the hot chick who wore a bulletproof bra.” Now Eli was picturing her with her shirt wide open. Minus any bra! He had to look away or boast a woody.

“TMI!”

“I see you looking at my chest as much as those two. I’m not offended! It comes with the territory.”

“Can we stop talking about your breasts.” Lloyd pinched the bridge of his nose. “I might not make it through the night and you guys are talking dirty. Not that those aren’t quite nice. Please don’t tell my wife I said that.”

“Lloyd is right. We’re behaving like kids.”

“You guys are! I’m just sitting here dealing with it all.” A thump was heard coming from upstairs. Ramirez paused the conversation and stepped to the staircase looking up.

“Everything alright up there?”

“Yeah! Perry just bumped his head on the spotlight. All clear outside!” Cosner called out! “He’s going to watch things while I come down and take a piss.”

“Just switch off every hour.”

“Sounds good!” Steps heard on the way down Ramirez turned back to Lloyd. Tired of sitting, McKenna got up to stretch and check out the kitchen for herself.

“Fully stocked fridge. At least we won’t starve.” She stood looking inside a moderately sized refrigerator. “Want a Coke, Eli?”

“Caffeine free?”

“You know it’s not.”

“Naaa! Bottled water!”

Taking one out she tossed it at him. Caught in mid-air just as Cosner showed up he fumbled the bottle. Cosner’s jacket was coated in blood. Feigning as if hurt Ramirez quickly barked orders. “Heads up! Trouble!” Starting for a staggering Ivan he stepped in close as if to prevent a fall. Instead, Ivan suckered him and used a hunting knife to stab Elijah in the gut.

“MOTHERFUCK!”

Lloyd immediately went into panic mode and headed for the front door to find it locked. A battle between Ramirez and Cosner resulted in blood spatter all over the floor. McKenna dropped her Coke can and swiftly drew her gun. Close quarters she shot Cosner in the leg. Agony loosened his grip on Eli forcing their leader to stagger against a wall holding his side. A lung pierced he was already coughing up blood.

Ivan’s turn to draw his gun, McKenna wasted no time and shot the agent in the chest three times. Dead before he hit the carpet. Rushing to Eli’s side McKenna ordered Lloyd to help carry him to the sofa. With no way out currently, he did so.

“Call 911!” Lloyd frantically told Miss Grace.

“Radio silence!”

“They already know I’m here. Just do it.”

“Fuck! LARKIN? GET DOWN HERE!”

“He’s dead! Cosner was covered in blood that was obviously not his.”

“SHIT!” Taking out her cell she did indeed break protocol. “Monroe? We’ve been infiltrated. Cosner and Larkin are both dead. Ramirez is bleeding out. Get us an ambulance and backup.”

“Stay on the line.” Agent Don Monroe dispatched an EMT and Fire Department to the lighthouse. “Grace! Listen to me. Is Lloyd alive?”

“Yes!”

“Okay! There’s a tunnel beneath the lighthouse. The closet under the staircase. Extract Halifax and go East. I’ll have people waiting with a car.”

“What about Eli?”

“Just make him comfortable. He knows the drill. Go back to radio silence. Matter of fact, ditch your phone so they can’t track you.” Ramirez did raise a thumb up and waved her on. Sirens already sounding she nodded and dropped her phone before grabbing Lloyd’s wrist.

A couch cushion used on the bleeding thanks to Lloyd, he apologized to Eli as McKenna led him away. The hidden ladder going down was taken by both until inside the sewer system. Headed east McKenna made a snap decision.

“What if whoever is waiting on us is an ambush.”

“We need to go it alone. I swear I’ll get you to safety.”

“Okay! I trust you Grace!” Lloyd crossed his fingers. “Where do we go?”

“Hopefully the one place these bastards won’t look.”

“Which is?”

“Just stay on my ass.”

No problem!

Caretaker, South Carolina!

“Este, we cannot brag about our affair. As saddened as I am over what Samuel did to me, to us, I am still his wife. Our anniversary is nigh.”

28981-73-ch-73-09-wanita.jpg 28981-73-ch-73-10-este.jpg

“Wanderin’ Wanita! ‘Ave no fear Lass, what we did was worth every breath.” Choking up suddenly he too sighed! “Aye, I still love me wife. Always ‘ave! Yet, I suppose I let her down more oft than not. I was nary a good husband, a drunk, a cheater, a bad fath-- er — me daughter hates me.”

“I’m certain Midnight adored you.” Not when he got handsy, well, perhaps, her submissive side did sneak in on her when she let it. “Tilly and Sheldon lives on the next block, correct?” Wanita driving her car, the boat captain was resorted to being her lookout for once.

“Left ahead, on the right!” He pointed! Following his directions Wanita Bearpaw landed at the doorsteps curb. Esteban felt extremely nervous in the moment, rubbing his sweaty hands together. “Let us do this.” Opening the passenger side door he noted a neighbor mowing his yard. The man let them do what they intended until there was no answer at the door. Wanita looked lost trying to peer through windows. That was enough for Evan Mossross.

Shutting his mower down the older man crossed between yards to intercept the dynamic duo. “Afternoon! If you’re looking for the Cooper’s they’re on vacation.”

“Oh! Actually, we’re trying to find Tilly’s sister Irene.” Wanita smiled warmly!

“Might check the police station. Cops were out here last night. Crazy music all morning long. Not here but somewhere in town. I just got a strange text on my phone saying free breakfast or lunch out at Coastal Waiters for putting up with the tunes. Billy Idol at 2:00 AM was certainly entertaining. I play guitar so it didn’t bother me none.”

“Why were the cops here then?” Este rubbed his freshly shaven face. Before leaving the boat Wanita helped him shave his beard and look human again.

“Way, I hear it Tilly’s sister locked her caregiver in the tool shed and left. Saw her and the girl tearing up poor Sheldon’s Stingray tranny yesterday. He’s going to flip when he gets that bill. Might add stolen car to her record.”

“We have to go.” Wanita tugged at Esteban’s shirt. “Thank you so much for the information.” Led away Evan went back to his yard. He did stop long enough to see a for sale sign in the opposite yard of the Cooper home. A picture of a busty blonde on the sign made him whistle. “Tiffany Root Realty! That woman could sell me a four bedroom birdhouse. Ballsy selling a home right next to Caretaker’s own realtors.” Then he noticed a Sold sticker on it. “Huh! She snuck up on me. That wasn’t there earlier.” Intriguing!

Once back inside her car Wanita looked at Este with sadness. “What could have possibly gotten into Irene to do all of that. Could she just be acting out because of...”

“Me harming her? I ‘ave considered that. Last time we spoke she did not seem like the bride I claimed. I think she wants a divorce. Nay! I know she does. I ‘ave nothing left to offer her.”

“I sense a good soul hiding in you, Este. Keep your chin up.”

“Rather keep y’er legs up.” Even in sorrow he winked.

“Stop that! Maybe!” She blushed and started her car. “Let’s see what the police can tell us.” Agreed, she drove across town. It took only five minutes to reach the station, Este eying the new wall that he helped build. He did not want Wanita to know it was over he that the wall came down in the first place. Fucking psycho Chantel Bigelow!

Parked out front the two of them headed inside. Greeted by dispatcher Stacy Bell she instantly recognized Esteban. “Goodness! Don’t you look new and improved.” Then it dawned on her as to why he might be here. “Oh! You must be here to try and bail Irene out. No bail! She was ordered to stay here by Nick Sanchez.”

28981-73-ch-73-11-stacy.jpg

“Ordered ye’ say! Does the man now own me wife?”

“I ... do not know how to answer that, Esteban.”

“Can we see her? I’m Wanita Bearpaw, Mister Sanchez it appears now owns my daughter Lillian.” Hearing all of this had Stacy looking stressed. With Dolan on the Rez with Nick talking to the elders over the identity of the body found beneath Harbinger Shoals she had nobody to consult. She was about to open mouth inset foot.

“You can but I have to warn you both that Irene is ... let’s just say not herself.”

“How do you mean?”
