Cutting the grass seemed like an easy job for young Michael, but it turns out walking behind a petrol mower is hot and dusty work. Not only that, but the pay was not so great after all. So Michael kept on going back and forth across the lawn cutting grass hour after hour, garden after garden, customer after customer. His Saturday went by in a hazy view of a lawn mower cutting grass.
By nearly Six pm, that evening, he was done, with the last lawn, the last garden and the last customer. Tired, thirsty and a few dollars richer, Michael was finally finished for the day. He put all the equipment into the back of his old pick-up truck and headed home to wash up, get something to eat and then watch TV until he went to bed. That was how every Saturday had gone for Michael for the last six weeks.
From Monday to Friday Michael went to art school. It was a two-year course and he was in his first year. Michael had drawing class, painting class and most surprising for Michael, art history class. It was a full-time course and he was swamped with his homework and studies. To earn some extra money, his mother had allowed him the chance to mow lawns in the neighbourhood, using the old pick-up and the petrol mower. He had work from most of his mother’s friends and neighbours. Even so, the money he earned was not going to make him a millionaire any time soon. Then was the fact that he was dog-tired at the end of every Saturday. If only he could earn more money for a little less effort, Michael thought to himself. Fortunately, there was an opportunity for young Michael to earn much more money about to come his way very soon.
Mandy and Jeff Conner were a young couple who were trying for a family. Married for three years and trying at every opportunity for Mandy to become pregnant. Still, there was no sign of them having a baby. So, on a trip to the doctor, they discovered that Jeff had a very low sperm count and it seemed highly unlikely that he would ever be able to father any children with Mandy or any other women for that matter. This was a huge disappointment for both of them. The doctor had offered several different types of treatment but they were all very costly and Jeff and Mandy could not afford to pay. Telling her best friend Judith about their situation, Mandy was practically in tears explaining that she and Jeff might never have children together. ”Oh Mandy honey, please don’t be so downhearted, ” Judith said to comfort her friend. ”But I wanted children so very, very much Judith, ” Mandy said as a few tears ran down her cheeks.
Afterwards, Judith gave a lot of thought to her friend Mandy’s predicament. She felt for her friend, it was just not fair that she could not have children just because Jeff, Mandy’s husband, had a low sperm count. As she was thinking about Mandy’s problem. Judith had a crazy idea! It was truly a crazy idea! It was so crazy that she thought that neither Mandy nor Jeff, would even consider Judith’s crazy idea as a remote possibility. The following day Judith called Mandy on the phone and asked her to meet at a local coffee shop because Judith had a crazy idea that Mandy might want to consider.
At eleven Mandy arrived at the coffee shop and there was Judith already sitting at a table just off to one side and the most private place to have a chat together. ”Hi, Mandy, ” Judith said. “Hi, ” Mandy replied. “So, what’s the ‘crazy’ idea you had last night?” Judith just sat and smiled at her friend for a few moments before she told Mandy. ”Your problem is with Jeff, right?” Judith asked. ”That’s right, Jeff’s sperm count is almost non-existent, ” Mandy said. ”So all you need is ‘sperm’ to get pregnant?” Judith asked. Mandy was getting a little confused and unsure about this chat with Judith. She had told Mandy on the phone that she had a ‘crazy idea’ but she was not telling her what the idea was.
Judith began to explain her idea to Mandy. She tried to use the correct medical and biological terms so that it would not sound so crude and disgusting to Mandy what her idea was. ”Your Kidding!” Mandy said shocked and outraged when she heard Judith’s idea. ”Relax! I am only telling you one sure-fire way of getting pregnant, ” said Judith. “I am sure there might well be other ways, ” Judith added. ”Well, your ‘crazy idea’ certainly is crazy. Super crazy in fact and frankly quite outrageous, ” said Mandy. They both fell silent looking away from each other over the coffee shop table. Eventually, Judith apologised to Mandy and they got back to being friends again.
After the meeting with Judith at the coffee shop Mandy went shopping to fill in the rest of the afternoon. She mostly went window shopping, going along the storefronts and looking inside. It was then that she saw a mother with her young child and suddenly felt so emotional that she had to turn away and dab her eyes as a few tears welled up. It was then that her thoughts went back to her chat with Judith and about her ‘crazy’ idea. Suddenly it began to dawn on her that perhaps Judith might be right and that Mandy should at least discuss the idea a bit more before saying a complete ‘no’ to Judith’s idea.
