Chapter 14: A Second Date
Stacy’s phone was beeping non-stop Saturday morning. Sandy texted multiple times in an attempt to get Stacy’s attention. She finally replied, “Yeah, I’m up. Come on over.”
Five minutes later there was a knock on Stacy’s front door. She plodded to the door in her panties and a long nightgown. Her hair was disheveled and she looked ragged after getting only a couple hours of sleep.
“I’m coming,” hollered Stacy. When she opened the door Sandy gasped.
“Sorry,” she said, “but you look like shit.”
“Thanks, good morning to you, too.”
Sandy entered and led them to the kitchen. She noticed that Stacy had not yet made coffee for the day.
“Want me to start a pot of coffee?” Sandy asked?
Stacy nodded and sat heavily onto a kitchen chair.
Stacy filled the carafe and poured water into the coffeemaker. She was surprised to see a cardboard cup from a local coffee shop and an empty Red Bull bottle sitting on the counter.
Stacy lied easily, “Walt had those in his car and asked if I would throw them out.”
Sandy added coffee grounds to the filter and turned on the machine. She pulled two cups from the shelf and sat them nearby before sitting at the table.
“Speaking of Walt? How’d it go? I was expected to get the juicy details last night when he left, but within a minute of him leaving I get your text message. You were too tired? What really happened? Did he get your engine running and you had to find relief with the toys I gave you?”
Sandy was wriggling her eyebrows up and down and smirking. When Stacy wouldn’t agree to go on a date last year Sandy came by one evening with a small bag from a local sex shop. She bought her sister a penis-shaped glass dildo and a rubberized wi-fi connected device that Stacy could control from her phone. She told her if she wasn’t going to get it from the real thing she didn’t have to relieve herself without assistance.
“What? NO! I had a headache. Really. It came on fast and I had to just get in bed with all the lights off and go to sleep.”
Stacy always played shocked when Sandy brought up the dildos. In reality, she loved her glass dick. She used it at least once a week. She didn’t care for the phone-controlled dildo and had only used in once or twice. Even with her protestations, Stacy assumed Sandy knew that she was addicted.
“Seriously? A headache?”
Stacy nodded ruefully. The coffeemaker gurgled and the last of the water dripped into the carafe. Sandy rose and filled their two cups. She returned and placed one in front of Stacy.
“Hmm, I’m skeptical about the headache, but the end of the date aside, how was dinner? I may have noticed you didn’t get back to the house until after 10:00.”
Stacy rolled her eyes. Of course, Sandy was watching. She was glad she sent the preemptive text message so she could be alone when Alexa arrived. She was also glad she insisted on Alexa park a street over and come in through the back yard.
“Spying on me?” asked Stacy.
“No, not at all. Just lucky that I was going by the window when I saw the car lights swing into your driveway. So, how was the date?”
Stacy smiled. Sandy saw it and knew that no matter what Stacy said, she had a good time.
Stacy told Sandy how Walt put his foot in his mouth with the first thing he said, but it really did break the ice and get the big questions out of the way. When she told her about the restaurant Sandy had several questions. She saw an advertisement and had been trying to get Todd to go for weeks.
“Now I have a solid second-hand review. Todd can’t say no, can he?”
Stacy did not answer. It was rhetorical question.
When Stacy started to describe the carnival, Sandy clapped her hands once. “Oh, how romantic. Did he win you a stuffed animal?”
Stacy pointed across the kitchen to the counter where her stuffed dolphin was perched.
“Ahh, that’s perfect.” Sandy was so happy for her sister. “And you really had a headache? No goodnight kiss?”
Stacy knew Sandy would never believe her but told her the truth. “Not last night. I had to end the date quickly.”
Sandy could see Stacy’s porch from her house so she wasn’t sure if Stacy was telling her the truth, but either way, she was glad she finally went on a date.
“Will you see Walt again?”
Stacy couldn’t hide her small smile. “I told him I had a great evening and that I would like to go out again. Because of the quick ending, we did not make plans.”
“I’m so happy for you! Walt seems to be like a great guy. And we know Debbie so well that we know he comes from a solid family. I really hope you go out again.”
They continued to talk until they finished the coffee, then Sandy went home to her weekend to-do list. Stacy went to the bedroom and changed into workout clothes. Instead of going for a run or bike ride, she decided to get in the car and go to the gym for some good old-fashioned free weights.
Saturday afternoon Stacy found herself in her living room with the television turned to a ball game. It dawned on her that this was the first Saturday in well over a year that she had nothing she had to get done that minute. Every free minute the past few months was spent studying for the bar. If it wasn’t the bar, then it was her internship. Brett, the partner she worked for at the law firm, had insisted that she take the rest of the week and the weekend off after taking the bar.
Stacy picked up her phone and briefly contemplated her message. She then opened her app and typed a short and simple message to Walt, “Thanks for a beautiful evening. Looking forward to our next one.”
She sat nervously waiting on a reply. It seemed like hours, but her phone beeped in less than five minutes.
“Me, too. I am tied up all day, and I need to return to Boston tomorrow, but will be back in town Friday. Does next Saturday night work for you?”
Stacy had mixed feelings. She excited to have a second date, but was slightly disappointed at having to wait, even though it was less than a week.
She replied, “Of course. Can’t wait!”
She then added a second message. “The next one is my treat. Just be at my house at 4:00 Saturday.”
Less than a minute later Walt replied, “It’s a date!”
Stacy was excited. She jumped up and started to walk with nowhere to go. Her feet led her to her bedroom, and then her lady parts led her to the bed where she found her glass friend. Twenty minutes later she was sated and fell asleep for an afternoon nap.
The next week was a time of transition. Without the bar hanging overhead, Stacy had time to herself in the evenings. Sandy talked her into coming over for dinner a few nights. The kids loved that because Stacy would offer to clean the table and do the dishes.
At work, Brett started to treat her differently. He acted as if she had already passed the bar and was giving her more responsibility and with less oversight. The confidence he showed her was a true sign of where he thought her future lay. It made Stacy uncomfortable because she was not positive she wanted to stay with the firm after getting the results of her bar exam.
If not at work, or at Sandy’s, Stacy was searching online for something unique to surprise Walt with on their date. Sandy suggested things like axe throwing or paintball, but Stacy thought they were too close to his real-life work experiences. A rock wall, or any other outdoor activities, felt like it was too soon given her history. She finally found something that she would never do by her own choice, but that seemed to make it the perfect activity for their date.
At precisely 4:00 PM a shiny black Mercedes C-class convertible pulled into Stacy’s driveway. The top was down and Walt, with wind-blown hair smiled broadly when he saw Stacy stand up from the chair on her porch.
He called out, “Happy Saturday! Hope you don’t mind a convertible.”
Stacy was grinning, too. “This looks perfect. It’s great weather to be going around town topless.”
She grinned mischievously at Walt at her double entendre. After she was seated and buckled, Walt asked, “OK, boss, where are we headed?”
