You are born in the ancient city of Almakan Alrahib, a walled city built around an oasis near the modern city of Al Mithnab.

The city has three great walls: the first protects the Sultan and his family and servants; the second protects the merchants, priests, and public officiants; and the third surrounds the entire city.

Water flows in pipes from the over-flowing spring in the inner city outward, with open fountains along its path, and collects in an inner moat against the outer wall. In times of drought, when the spring’s flow wanes, the merchants must import water and the peasants must live off the dregs of the moat, but the inner section always has enough.
