Brigitte stared at her companions distantly on the drive home, as if watching fish in a pond. She wasn’t feeling the way she was supposed to feel: pride at serving her community, pride at becoming a woman, hope that maybe there was a baby growing inside her. Instead all she felt was doubt. The traditions she had grown up believing in were no longer shining pillars holding up civilization; they had been blemished.
Maybe Izzy, Dylan, and Ella’s perversions were the exceptions - sputters and bumps in the otherwise smoothly-running machinery of civilization. But what if they weren’t exceptions? What if they were representative of a vast hidden truth: that the system Brigitte believed in so much didn’t work?
