The humans decided to call the demon “Hector”. He reminded Baz of ancient Greek statues, so Laurel and Baz started picking names from the Iliad. Ulysses, Ajax, and Menelaus were too conspicuous, they decided, but Hector could work in modern society.

The deal was not completely satisfactory to either side. They went into surprising detail, but the basic gist of it was:

1. Hector would not harm, nor supernaturally influence, Baz, Laurel, or Kate, ever.

2. Hector would help them to destroy the Erovespitalintes plant, and only injure humans in the process as a last resort.

3. Hector would be free once that was done.

4. Baz, Laurel, and Kate would make no effort to harm, imprison, or control Hector, forever after.

5. Hector would not injure any human, except in self-defense, for a period of 10 years.

6. Hector would not impregnate any human for a period of 5 years.

There was no way to force the other parties’ compliance, but Hector told Laurel where to find a sincerity-testing spell online, so she could be sure of his good faith. As an added bonus, Hector taught Laurel a spell to incapacitate men, on whom his charms would be less effective. Baz stoically endured while Laurel repeatedly practiced on him.

Laurel, Baz, and Hector parted ways with Kate on the street in front of the sorority house late at night, and Hector discarded his robe.
