Sometimes I’m such an idiot. It turns out the cabin has cell phone service after all. And I never even thought to turn on my phone. I guess they put in a tower sometime in the last couple of years. I only turned it on to make sure it was charged because I was going to go to town to get milk. Baby needs milk, right? In truth I might have postponed the trip, but my journal was down to its last three pages, and the idea of running out kind of made me panic. So I thought worst case I could do my journal on my phone, and I turned it on and there were like seven thousand messages. Almost all of them were from Logan. I started at the end, I’m not sure why, and it turns out he knew I was at the cabin. When I wasn’t returning his calls and emails, he called everyone, and not far down the list he talked to Uncle Mal who told him I was at the cabin. He cut his extended concert tour short and came right home.
So I called him.
“Why didn’t you come up to the cabin?” I asked him.
“I don’t know,” he said. “Do you want me to?”
“I don’t know,” I said.
There was a long silence.
Then he asked, “Are you alone?”
I had to pause. “Not exactly,” I said.
There was another long pause.
“Can you tell me who it is?” he asked.
“Not right now,” I said.
Another long pause.
Then I said, “I’m sorry you cut your tour short. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you I was coming up to the cabin.”
“Me too,” he said. He sounded very sad.
“Don’t be mad at me,” I said. “I love you.”
“What about the guy you’re with?”
“It’s not a guy, Logan.”
“A girl?”
“It’s not a guy or a girl. It’s that I’m pregnant, Logan.”
I’m not sure if he heard because right about then the phone died. No battery. And I hadn’t brought my charger.
So now there’s no phone and no milk and no more pages in my journal.
