Coordinating with the Whittier Police, Captain Barnett raided the house successfully. Carlie was chained up in the basement, but had not been otherwise mistreated. Richard and two minions were led away in handcuffs to be held without bail.
Everyone was tearful when Jo and Carlie were reunited. Even Captain Barnett was weepy, after kisses and hugs from Kayla, Dorothy, Jo, and finally Carlie herself.
It turned out that Richard had few assets in his own name. His father made sure he had no access to CST funds, so he was left to rot waiting for his criminal trial. CST members who supported him were summarily dismissed from the organization.
CST settled with Nio and the Dawsons for $8,000,000 cash and an annuity that paid $25,000 per year for Carlie’s medical and counseling expenses, and then for college/university tuition until she reached age 25. Jo bought a house and went to college herself seeking a professional career.
Nio’s 35% cut was $2,800,000. Kayla’s salary was tripled.
Soon everything had calmed down and Nio’s practice had returned to normal routine.
Kayla’s wardrobe had much improved since her days in the old courier-appropriate suits. It was Friday, and she had indulged in a long slinky dress and heels. At 4:00 she brought a bottle of wine and two glasses back to Nio’s office.
“What’s this?” he asked.
“I have been doing some thinking. Now that Dawson v. CST is over, I think we should concentrate on other things. Like our relationship.”
She poured wine into their glasses.
“Remember when you cooked for me? I miss that. Remember when we danced? I miss that too. Remember when we made hot love together? I miss that most of all.
“Nio, you have been a total gentleman, and respected me as an independent woman. And you have proven yourself as a highly moral and admirable person.
“I regret that I reacted so angrily when you offered me this job.
“So, will you be my boyfriend again?”
Nio smiled. “If you kiss me.”
Kayla fell into his embrace for a heated kiss, that lasted more than a minute.
“Lets have a toast. To Kayla and Nio!”
They clinked glasses and sipped.
“Now, boyfriend, take me back to that Churrascaria for some barbecue, and then take me home for some of your meat!”
