Carlie was starting her fourth month at her new school. Not only was she keeping up with her assignments, but she was opening up more and more, making friends and occasionally talking in a quiet strained tone.
It was a Tuesday afternoon and Jo was on time to pick up Carlie at the 3:00 bell. But, where was she? Alarmed, Jo went to the office and asked about her daughter.
“Your daughter was picked up an hour ago by a policeman. He came to the office first and said there was an emergency at home ... I guess that’s not true.”
“You know what else, that wasn’t a real policeman, dumb ass! Call the real police, NOW!” Jo was furious and terrified, all at once. She grabbed her phone and called Nio.
“Nio, they’ve taken Carlie! A fake policeman showed up and the school sent her away with him. Yeah, about an hour ago. OK, I’ll wait for you here in the office. It’s Greenwood School on Langley St.”
Nio and Kayla hustled out and locked up the office. In his Audi, Nio drove aggressively while spitting out curses in both English and Brazilian Portuguese. As they arrived, they saw both a squad car and an “unmarked” car at the school entrance. Inside, Nio recognized Captain Peter Barnett.
“Pete! I’m glad to see you, but I wasn’t expecting a captain to show up.”
“Nio, these days we jump on abductions right away. And I was a few blocks away when the call came in. Of course we have confirmed that the abductor was wearing a costume. I gather you know this girl and her mother?”
“Yes, they are my clients. I’m suing for damages and child support from Carlie’s father, who has never acknowledged paternity despite a DNA test. He’s a leader in the [CST] and that organization has oppressed Jo for years in violent and criminal ways. A few weeks ago a couple of goons tried to kick in the door of their apartment a couple of blocks from here, using a car registered to CST. We have a restraining order against them, not that they are likely to respect it.
“I know it’s not my call, but if you can track down Richard ____ at CST headquarters, that might be a place to start. He’s her father.”
“I’ll get right on that, Nio. Here’s my card with my mobile number. CST has got connections in high places, but I think I can find an honest Judge to sign warrants. Let’s just take a minute to talk to Ms. Dawson first.”
“Jo, this is Police Captain Barnett. I know him well, and you can trust him.”
