I’ve got my new job, and I handed my notice in last Monday too although there’s no connection, I have no idea why Gerard has gone. ‘I’ve told the district manager that you are perfectly capable of running things in the meantime.’ he said, ‘I’m sorry about what I suggested last time we were in here, so I’ve also given him a really good written reference for you. Not just as a way of saying sorry, but because it’s true anyway.’

‘I thanked him and wished him all the best with his new job. He left and I was excited thinking I could now apply and have a good chance of getting it. But I won’t be applying after all.’

‘Why ever not?’ Danny asked. ‘An hour after Peter had left, the district manager came to see me.’ Ken told him. ‘We went into the restroom too. He put the notice on the door and locked the door.’

‘Gerard has left unexpectedly,’ he told me, ‘Peter is leaving in a fortnight which I knew about. So, what are your plans?’ ‘I plan to apply for Peters job I told him. I have always stood in for him whenever he’s been off or on holiday in the past and he’s always seemed pleased with what I’d done.’

‘Yes, he’s given you an excellent reference,’ he said. ‘You’ve been here a while, and we like to reward loyalty. If you want it, Peters job is yours.’ ‘Thank you,’ I told him, ‘Yes please, I accept.’ ‘Next we’ll need a replacement for you and Gerard,’ he said, ‘Do you have any suggestions?’
