Inside she stopped dead in her tracks in complete surprise. She looked at Grace and her parents, then as the penny dropped, a smile lit up her face. Grace had headed over as soon as the door opened. As she gave Joan a hug and a kiss, Joan said, ‘It’s lovely to see you again.’ ‘I believe you have already met,’ Paul said grinning like a Cheshire cat.

Grace gave Lorraine and Danny a hug and a kiss whilst Joan and Grace’s parents greeted each other. Then Graces parents greeted Lorraine and Danny. As he hugged Danny Graces dad said quietly in his ear, ‘It seems we have even more to thank you for.’ When she returned to his side, Danny whispered in his mum’s ear, ‘Paul knows everything.’

They had a lovely meal, then they moved away from the table to a small seating area at the side. As soon as they had finished their coffee’s, Paul and Grace got up and stood arm in arm facing the other five. ‘In this room,’ Paul said, ‘Are the five people most important to both of us, so we felt it was only right to share this moment with you all.’

He stepped back, and still holding Grace’s hand, he knelt down on one knee. Holding out a ring box with his other hand, he asked, ‘Grace, will you do me the honour of becoming my wife.’ Grace gave him a big smile and said, ‘Yes.’ Danny had his phone ready having suspected this might happen. He got a perfect picture of the proposal.

As Paul stood up, they kissed, then everyone congratulated them. David the waiter brought in a bottle of champagne at that point. After opening it, he served them all a glass and left the room.

Danny proposed a toast to the happy couple. As they all stood talking, Paul told them that they hadn’t set a wedding day yet or made any plans other than picking Danny as their best man.

On their way home Joan and Lorraine asked Danny how long he had known. ‘I didn’t,’ he said, ‘I suspected, because Paul had said he might be needing me to be best man sometime in the future. But this lunch seemed to be an ideal time, that’s why I had my phone camera ready just in case.’

‘Where did they meet?’ Lorraine asked. Joan answered saying, ‘Graces mum told me, she bumped into Paul and Danny in McDonalds a while ago. She said they were terrified after what had happened in the past, but when she told them he was a friend of Danny’s, they felt more at ease about it. Then once they got to know him, they thought he was lovely.’

‘McDonalds,’ Lorraine said looking at Danny smiling, ‘That place has a lot to answer for.’ Joan didn’t understand that but said nothing. Lorraine stayed the night as it was school holidays.
