‘Ok, you can tell me all about it in a moment,’ Lewis told him. ‘Whilst we drink our coffee, let me tell you the news I heard from Aiden on my way here.’

‘John and Kenneth appeared at the magistrates court this morning. The magistrates were told everything that had happened to you. They were shown the video I took, the recording from the flat and the photo from the bank. They were horrified hearing what they had done to you and were evidently affected by your screams of pain.’

‘They immediately asked how you were. The prosecutor told them that you were very sore and were undergoing some sessions of counselling. The magistrate remanded them both in custody to be sentenced at the Crown court. So, they are both now locked up.’

Alvin smiled, ‘That’s a relief,’ he said. ‘Now,’ Lewis told him, ‘Before you tell me your news, let’s go over to the settee and get comfortable.’ As they moved over, Alvin said, ‘Shall I strip off?’

‘I had sat down in front of his desk. ‘Right,’ he said. ‘Tell me what’s happened.’ I told him everything. Then at the end I told him they were both in court this morning and showed him the picture of Kenneth at the bank.’

‘Incidentally, I told Kenneth to pay three thousand into the bank. He told me he had forgotten the number so had only paid two thousand in. Then realised his mistake and paid the other thousand in a few days later.’

‘I can understand if you don’t,’ he told me, ‘But are you prepared to carry on working here?’ ‘Yes, of course.’ I told him. He picked up the phone again. ‘Can you find Martin and send him to my office.’ he asked.’

‘We sat and chatted whilst we waited. ‘I’d rather as few people as possible know what happened to me.’ I told him. ‘That I can understand,’ he said. ‘No one will hear anything from me.’ I had just thanked him when there was a knock on the door.’

‘Martin came in and sat down. Martin is quite elderly, he used to do Kenneth’s job before he decided he wanted to do something less hectic in his last few years before he retired.’

‘Martin, I need a favour.’ he said. ‘Kenneth has gone, so I would like you to work with Alvin here and do his job between you.’ That sounded good to me, and I really perked up. Then came the bombshell. ‘Then as soon as you think he can manage it,’ Uncle Earnest told him, ‘You can go back to what you’re doing now. Alvin will then take over Kenneth’s job.’

‘I couldn’t believe my ears. Martin agreed and Uncle Earnest told me, ‘You’ll stay on your present wages whilst Martin is training you. When he says you’re capable of doing it alone, you can move up onto the same as Kenneth was on.’

‘What’s happened to the shop today.’ he asked. I told him Mike had opened it and was holding the fort until I got back. ‘I didn’t know you knew Mike.’ he said. ‘I don’t,’ I told him, ‘I’ve never met him, only spoken on the phone. Lewis’s asked him.’ ‘He sounds like a remarkable young man,’ Uncle Earnest said, ‘You’re lucky to have such good friends.’ he added.’

‘Ok, go back to the shop for today and continue there through to Saturday. I’ll put someone else in for next week until Mike is back. You start back here with Martin on Monday.’

‘I had no idea what money Kenneth had been on. But I knew it must be a lot more than I was getting now. I came back here feeling fantastic. I got back just after eleven. I thanked Mike for standing in. I told him that I didn’t feel able to tell him why it had been necessary, but I would tell you that you could tell him.’

He sorted out a problem that was stopping my wife and I getting together. Not only that, but last week when Valerie went into labour and the ambulance was delayed, Lewis delivered our baby.’

‘I told him that nothing would surprise me about you.’ Alvin said smiling. ‘I thanked him again for standing in, and he left for home.’
