‘That’s perhaps jumping the gun a bit,’ Ella told her, ‘But I probably remember dad even better than you. He was a lovely person and he loved mum with all his heart. If I could conjure him up this minute and ask him what he thought, I know without a shadow of a doubt what he would say.’

As Gemma looked at her expectantly, Ella said, ‘He would say, ‘I can’t be here anymore, and your mum has done a wonderful job on her own looking after you two.
