Chapter 5: Wedding Bells

FRIDAY

Friday after school Lewis went home with Ella for Dinner. They walked arm in arm enjoying a warm evening stroll. Arriving at Ella’s, Lewis gave her mum and her sister a hug and a kiss.

They all sat and chatted for a while, then Ella’s mum Julie went off to the kitchen to put the final touches to their meal. Uncle Ernie and his lady friend Susan were joining them for dinner. The three of them laid the table then sat and had a game of Cluedo whilst they waited.

Gemma won as usual, then soon after the doorbell rang. Ernie and Susan came in and there were hugs and kisses all round. ‘We have something to tell you,’ Ernie announced as soon as everyone was sitting down.

Then Susan said, ‘Yesterday, Ernie proposed to me, and I said yes.’ She showed them her hand which she had managed to keep out of sight up until then. An engagement ring sparkled on her finger.

After a moment’s stunned silence, everyone congratulated them and there were more hugs and kisses all round. ‘Have you set a date yet,’ Julie asked them. ‘Yes, we’ve booked the registry office for a month tomorrow,’ Ernie said. ‘You will all be invited naturally. There’ll only be twelve in total. We’ll have a reception in the private dining room at the Top Hat Restaurant down the road from the Town Hall.’

They all moved to the table and as they ate, in between mouthfuls they were plied with more questions. ‘Have you decided where you will live?’ Lewis asked. Susan answered saying, ‘We thought about one of us moving in with the other. But in the end, we decided to sell both houses and buy a new property between us.’

‘We haven’t started looking yet, but it will still be in this area.’ Ernie answered. ‘There’s one other thing to tell you too,’ Ernie said. He nodded at Susan. ‘We’d like a family,’ Susan said. ‘I’m too old to have a baby, so we’re thinking of adopting a child.’

Another stunned silence. ‘You don’t do things by halves, do you?’ Julie said smiling at Ernie. ‘Any particular age?’ Lewis asked. ‘We haven’t thought that far ahead,’ Ernie answered. ‘We know we would be unlikely to get a baby because of their scarcity and our age. Besides, nappies don’t appeal to either of us.’

‘I suppose the ideal age to match your age would be early teens,’ Lewis said. ‘Someone around Gemma’s age perhaps. I’m sure there are a lot of kids in care at that age.’

Ella looked at him and smiled. She knew him well enough by now to guess he already had someone in mind. ‘I hadn’t really thought about age,’ Ernie said, ‘But you’re right, we wouldn’t want to take he or she out and be mistaken for their grandparents.’

After a lovely meal and a lot of chatter, they all helped clear away the dishes. During all the bustling around, Ernie caught Lewis’s eye and they went out into the hall. ‘I didn’t want to say anything publicly without checking with you first,’ he said, ‘But Susan and I would both like you to be our best man.’

‘I’d be delighted,’ Lewis told him. Ernie gave him a hug. ‘That’s great,’ he said, ‘None of this would have happened without you.’ When they all sat around the table again for another game of Cluedo, Ernie announced that Lewis had agreed to be their best man.

Then Susan said, ‘Ella and Gemma, would you both be my bridesmaids.’ Gemma was the most excited, not ever having been to a wedding before. Julie explained to her what she would have to do and added, ‘You’ll need a new dress of course.’ That delighted both girls.

Gemma won Cluedo as always, but they all enjoyed playing. Lewis asked Ernie if he had a busy day tomorrow. ‘No,’ Ernie said, ‘I try not to work weekends now.’ Lewis excused himself and left the room. Returning ten minutes later in time to have a coffee with everyone.

When it got near to leaving time, Ernie grinned at Lewis and said, ‘If you and Ella would like to go and say goodnight, we can drop you off on our way home.’ Lewis and Ella went out into the hall and had a long hug and several kisses.

On the way home Lewis was sitting in the front with Ernie. ‘If it doesn’t interfere with anything you’re doing tomorrow afternoon, could you do me a favour between half one and four?’ he asked. ‘Of course,’ Ernie said, ‘What do you want me to do?’ ‘I have a friend at school,’ Lewis said. ‘Rupert’s mother is in a nursing home an hour on the bus from here.’

‘Because of his circumstances, he has to save up for the bus fare to get to visit her once a month. I’ve managed to arrange for him to get a free bus pass so he can go more often, but it hasn’t come through yet. According to the Matron, she could have another stroke at any time. The next one is expected to be fatal, so it would be so nice if he could get there this week as well.’

‘Of course,’ Ernie said, ‘Be glad to, how long does he stay with her?’ ‘An hour usually,’ Lewis said, having texted Rupert earlier to ask. ‘We can both take him,’ Ernie said, ‘Then we can go and have a look around the shops whilst he’s visiting.’

‘Where shall we collect him?’ ‘If you come to the shop for half past one tomorrow, then I can introduce you.’ Lewis said. Arriving home shortly afterwards, after he waved them off, he texted Rupert. ‘I’ve arranged a lift for you with some friends tomorrow. They’ll take you to the nursing home and pick you up later to bring you back,’ he told him. ‘If you can come to the shop for half past one tomorrow, I’ll introduce you.’

Rupert was delighted. ‘That’s wonderful,’ he said, ‘Thank you so much.’

LEWIS’S SATURDAY

The next morning Lewis was working at the shop as usual. He had explained to Mike what was going to happen at lunch time.

Mike and Lewis had just finished their lunch when there was a knock on the shop door. Lewis went to answer it and found Rupert outside. He took him through to the back room. ‘Hi,’ Mike said, ‘You look even happier than last time I saw you.’ Mike saw him smile at Lewis and guessed it was another of Lewis’s successes.

Lewis explained to Rupert that his girlfriend’s uncle and his fiancé were going shopping near the nursing home. ‘You’ll need to direct them when you get near,’ he said. Then tell them where you want dropping on the way back.’

Another knock on the door and Ernie stood there with Susan. They both came in and were introduced to Mike and Rupert. As everyone chatted Mike learned that Ernie and Susan had just got engaged last night. They learned Mike was going to be a dad. ‘And it’s all Lewis’s fault.’ Mike said.

As everyone looked startled, he added with a grin, ‘He brought my wife and I together.’ Ernie and Susan smiled at each other. ‘That’s sort of how we met too they told him.’ ‘He’s got a lot to answer for.’ Mike said laughing.

Ernie and Susan went off with Rupert. After they’d gone, Mike gave Lewis a hug. ‘There must be a lot of people around who owe their happiness to you.’ he said. They opened up the shop for their usual busy afternoon.

At ten to five Ella arrived and went through to the back room. After they had closed up the shop Lewis and Mike went through to join her. Ella had made three coffees ready. They sat and chatted over their coffee. Lewis had told Mike that Ella was coming. Ella asked how Valerie’s pregnancy was going. ‘Apart from a bit of early morning sickness, she’s fine,’ he told them. ‘It’s not kicking yet though.’ he added.

Mike got up, gave Ella a hug and set off home. ‘Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.’ was his parting shot, said with a big grin.

Lewis came back from locking the door after Mike to find Ella standing waiting for him. She ran into his arm’s, and they kissed. They wasted no time. Their eager hands undressed each other down to bra and panties on Ella and shorts on Lewis.
