‘I can tell you that most people who come to see me, feel that their problem is so terrible and so embarrassing that they couldn’t possibly tell anyone about it. But everyone seems to manage to tell me. And of course, until I know what it is, I can’t fix it.’
‘This week I can manage Thursday or Friday evening, are either of those ok for you?’ ‘Yes, could I come Friday please.’ he asked. After hearing Leslie’s tale and now speaking to Cliff, Dean was still doubtful if he could do anything. But he sounded nice, and it had to be worth a try.
Cliff told him what to do if he changed his mind. ‘I’ll send you a head and shoulders picture of me in a minute,’ Cliff said, ‘Then you will recognise me at the station. Perhaps you could send me one of you too. If you can, try and arrive around four thirty.’
‘Text me your arrival time once you’re on your way. See you on Friday,’ Cliff told him, ‘Keep your spirits up in the meantime, remember you’re not just putting up with the problem anymore, you’ve started doing something to get rid of it.’
After they said goodbye and hung up, Dean sat there oblivious of the hustle and bustle of the town. He was feeling happier than he had for ages. He had no idea why, but since talking to Cliff, his doubts that Cliff would be able to do anything had changed.
Now he felt a happy anticipation that he might just be able to do something after all. He walked back home with lighter steps than when he had left earlier.
TUESDAY - CLIFF
As he came out of school, Cliff got a text from Sister Williams, the ward sister he had met when he rescued the sons of two of her patients a while ago.
‘Hi Cliff,
There is a problem in the hospital. I have no idea what it is, but Mr Walker from pharmacy, who you met in my office knows about it. He has talked to the hospital chief administrator about you. I don’t know what he’s told him, but he’s convinced him you will be able to sort it out discretely.’
‘Only a few people know about whatever it is, three people so far as I can make out and they’d like to meet you as soon as you can. Mr Walker asked me to contact you and arrange it. I’m to come with you, I suspect that’s to back up whatever Mr Walker has said to Mr Hughes.
Thanks,
Sister Williams.’
‘Hi Sister,
I could come straight from school tomorrow and be at the hospital for half four.
Regards
Cliff.’
Just as he reached home, he got word that the meeting would be arranged for five o’clock the next day, so if he came to the ward, he and Sister Williams would go over to admin together. He returned a thumbs up.
WEDNESDAY - HOSPITAL - CLIFF
From school Cliff cycled over to the hospital. He went to the ward, and Sister Williams thanked him for coming. They walked over to the admin block together and Cliff was introduced to the Chief Administrator. He took one look at Cliff and asked sister to step outside with him.
They were gone a good five minutes. When they returned Mr Hughes the admin chief apologised. ‘I wasn’t expecting someone so young.’ he said. ‘It’s ok,’ Cliff told him, ‘I’m used to it. It doesn’t help that because of my size I look at least four years younger than I am.’
Then Mr Walker arrived from pharmacy, accompanied by someone introduced as Tommy, who it turned out was the pathologist. ‘For the benefit of Sister Williams and Cliff I’ll explain what we suspect, and what evidence we have.’ Mr Hughes announced.
‘Can I have your assurance that nothing goes out of this room?’ he asked Sister Williams and Cliff. ‘Of course,’ the sister agreed. ‘I never divulge anything I’m told in confidence, without the permission of the person who told it me.’ Cliff assured them.
‘Cliff, can I just check that you know what a postmortem is?’ Mr Hughes asked. ‘Yes.’ Cliff answered. ‘Go ahead then Tommy,’ he instructed. ‘I have noticed on a couple of female postmortems recently,’ Tommy told them, ‘A vaginal discharge.’
‘In itself, discharges from dead bodies are quite normal. The first time I noticed it, it was irrelevant to the reason for that particular postmortem, so I ignored it. But then a week later I noticed a similar discharge on another one.’
‘This time I took a sample of it and sent it to the lab. Whilst waiting for their report, I found a similar discharge from the anus of a young male. I took a sample of that too and sent it to the lab. Two days ago, I saw the same thing on another female.’
‘I started to have a suspicion of what it might be, but I decided that was far too gross to be possible. I haven’t had a report on the latest one yet, but the reports on the other two confirmed my suspicions. Both samples were of male sperm.’
‘But as if that wasn’t bad enough, they were both the same D.N.A. so they were from the same person. One more thing, the male had been found at home after lying dead for at least a day. The lady had also been dead for over twenty-four hours before my PM.’
‘Yet in both cases, the sperm was relatively fresh.’ ‘So, are you suggesting that someone might be having sex with the bodies in your mortuary?’ Cliff asked. Tommy answered, ‘Yes.’ Mr Hughes and Mr Walker nodded, and Sister Williams said, ‘That’s disgusting.’
‘We could be wrong,’ Tommy admitted, ‘Although I can’t see how. But if we start any investigating ourselves, word would be bound to get out. Then even if we’re proved wrong, it would still cause an awful lot of distress for relatives, not just now, but for months, possibly years ahead.’
‘It wouldn’t do the hospitals reputation any good either.’ Mr Hughes added. ‘But even so, if we’re right, we can’t let it continue without doing something about it. When Tommy first told me I brought in Mr Walker and it was he who seemed to think that you might be the answer.’
‘I admit that when I saw you, I thought someone was pulling my leg. But after a word with the sister here, I’m prepared to let you try.’ ‘Thank you for your honesty,’ Cliff told him. ‘I’m sure I can catch the culprit for you, but then we need to decide what to do with him.’
‘I presume that even if you have evidence of who it is and what he’s done, you don’t want it made public.’ ‘Is that possible?’ Mr Hughes asked, sounding hopeful. ‘I don’t see why not,’ Cliff told him. ‘Can I ask what ages the victims were?’
‘Both women would be in their mid-twenties and the male was eighteen. I remember that particularly, because I have a son the same age.’ Tommy told him. ‘I know that mortuaries exist, and what they’re for.’ Cliff told them, but I’ve never been to one.’
‘Can you tell me who brings the bodies along in the first place?’ ‘Usually the hospital porters,’ Tommy told him. ‘But the ambulance service delivers them direct sometimes too, if they have been certified dead whilst in their care.’
‘Apart from them and you,’ Cliff asked, addressing Tommy, ‘Who else would be in the mortuary at any time?’ ‘I have an assistant who’s a trainee pathologist. Also, there’s the mortuary keeper, who is usually a hospital porter.’
‘He, and occasionally a random other porter, will often assist in preparing a body for the PM. Or for collection by an undertaker. Oh, and undertakers arrive to take bodies away too, but they are never in there alone.’
‘From say eight o’clock at night until six in the morning, how many people would have occasion to be in there?’ Cliff asked. ‘Live ones, that is.’ he added with a smile. ‘Within that time, it would only be porters delivering a body from the wards or an ambulance crew. But they would have a porter with them to open up.’
‘So am I right in thinking that if an ambulance crew arrived and found someone alive in there, they would just assume he worked there. But if a hospital porter found someone in there, he’d know he shouldn’t be there, even if it was someone that he knew to be a hospital employee?’
