‘I’d like to try as soon as you can fit me in please,’ Ellie told him, thinking he sounded nice and clearly knew what he was doing. ‘I’m tied up tomorrow evening,’ Cliff told her, ‘But I could do Thursday. Now I don’t know if you are aware of it, but I work with Ethan’s neighbour Mike on a Saturday. He allows me to use the room at the back of the shop after it closes.’

‘But if you came for half five, Mike would have long gone home, so he’d never know you’d been. I know he wouldn’t say anything to Ethan anyway, but if he didn’t know, I’m sure you’d feel easier.’ ‘Thank you,’ Ellie replied, thinking how considerate he was.

‘Yes please, I’ll come on Thursday.’ ‘The shop will be closed and in darkness by then,’ Cliff told her, ‘But I’ll be in the back room. Just knock on the shop door. We’ll have a coffee together first then you can decide if you want to stay or go.’

‘If you do decide to go, you don’t have to explain why, just get up and leave. If you weren’t happy to stay, we’d be wasting our time anyway. You have my number, so if you change your mind, just text, ‘Not coming.’ ‘Thank you,’ Ellie told him, sounding determined, ‘But I’ll be there.’

THURSDAY - VIDEO SHOP - CLIFF & ELLIE

Cliff arrived at quarter past five, he went into the back room and put coffee in the mugs ready and boiled the kettle. Then he went and sat at the shop counter in darkness. Five minutes later he saw a figure at the door and heard a light knock.

Getting up he put the shop light on and opened the door. Ellie looked very nervous, but shook his hand and said hello as he introduced himself and let her in. He showed her the locked door and explained why he was leaving his key in the lock.

They went into the back room, switching the shop light out as they did. Cliff pointed to the seats at the table and Ellie sat down whilst he made them coffees. As they sat sipping, they studied each other. ‘I’m close to seventeen.’ Cliff told her.

‘I know I look a lot younger than my age, which doesn’t help, but I can assure you that all the counselling I’ve done has added at least ten years to my age.’ Ellie smiled at that, realising he was trying to help her come to terms with the idea of confiding in someone so young.

Cliff explained about needing to know all about her, her feelings and her life, to be able to know best how to help her. ‘How we’re going to achieve that,’ he told her, ‘Is in two ways. I’m going to ask you lots and lots of questions, many about things you’ve probably never ever told a soul before.’

‘I know that is not going to be easy for you, especially the very intimate ones. So, to get you feeling relaxed, before we start, I’ll ask you to lie on the settee. Then I will massage your back from your head to your feet and back again.’

‘Whilst I do that, I’ll ask my questions. By the time we’ve done all that, you will feel so at ease with me that you’ll be able to discuss everything you want to know, free from any embarrassment. That means you are more likely to digest what I’m teaching you.’

‘When you lie down, I’ll sit at your side and start off by massaging the back of your head. I won’t move off your head, or start asking any questions, until you feel ready to start and tell me so by saying ‘Go.’ When we’ve finished our coffees, I’ll ask you to decide.’

‘Either by going over to the settee or walking out. There’s no pressure on you in here, everything is your decision. Everything that happens only happens with your cooperation. And we will progress at a speed to suit you, not me.’

Ellie liked what she was hearing but wasn’t entirely sure about the idea of being massaged. She’d never ever had one, but she’d seen them on tv and had often wondered if it would feel as nice as it looked. ‘But if I can just walk out whenever I want to, I should at least give it a try.’ she decided.

They finished their coffees and Cliff told her to decide, whilst he dealt with the mugs. When he turned from the sink, Ellie was sitting on the edge of the settee looking very nervous. ‘Nothing in this room will hurt you or take you by surprise.’ Cliff assured her.

‘Before I do anything, I’ll tell you what it is, why I want to do it and what I hope to gain from it. Even then it won’t happen unless you agree. I’ve explained why I want you on the settee, so in your own time, take your shoes off and lie down.’

Seeing Cliff was just going to stand waiting patiently, Ellie took her shoes off, pushed them under the settee and lay down. After asking if it was ok, Cliff sat down. ‘When you turn over,’ he reminded her, ‘I’ll massage the back of your head until you say go.’

As she turned over, Cliff reminded her, ‘Don’t forget what I told you about saying ‘Pass’ or ‘Stop.’ I’m going to put my hands on your head now.’ he told her. Moments later as she felt his hands land on her head, it happened so gently it surprised her.

Then as he started massaging, Ellie thought to herself, ‘Perhaps this is going to be enjoyable after all.’ She lay there enjoying the feeling, reluctant for it to stop, then thinking perhaps it might be just as nice or even nicer on my back, she called out ‘Go.’

As Cliffs hands moved down onto her shoulders and massaged them, Ellie was enjoying the feeling. Then Cliff asked, ‘What is the age difference between you and Ethan?’ ‘I’m three years younger.’ Ellie replied. Then she added, ‘That was a very tactful way of asking a lady her age.’

‘You can’t see it,’ Cliff told her, ‘But I’m smiling at being caught out. Can you take me through your life from secondary school until now,’ Cliff asked, ‘Include where you lived and who else lived there.’ As he moved down her back, Ellie collected her thoughts together.

As she felt his hands pass over her bra strap, she wondered how soon it would be before she felt Ethans hands there, and more to the point, how would she react if it happened. ‘At the start of secondary school,’ Ellie began, ‘I lived in a three bedroomed detached house with my mum and dad.’

‘I was an only child,’ she said, then as Cliffs hands moved over her waist onto her jeans, she froze. Cliff felt her go tense, but as she didn’t speak, he carried on. ‘Remember nothing in here will hurt you.’ he said quietly. He felt her start to relax a little.

Then as he moved onto the back of her thighs, she continued, ‘Dad was a self-employed builder and mum went out cleaning. She also cooked occasionally for people in big houses who were having a dinner party. We weren’t rich, but we were comfortable.’

‘At school I was good at English and maths, but not much else. I was useless at any sports, although I did try. I’ve always been quiet and shy, so I didn’t mix well. I had one girlfriend in my form called Tina who was very similar to me.’

‘I was politely friendly with everyone else, but I didn’t really make any other what I’d call friends. Tina and I spent quite a bit of time together in and out of school. Her parents liked me and my mum and dad liked Tina, so it was like having a sister I suppose.’

‘We had a couple of holidays together with each other’s parents. When I left school just before I was seventeen, I did a year’s course at the local college in secretarial work and account keeping. From there just after my eighteenth birthday, I got a job with my present employer.’

As Cliffs hands reached the top of her legs, she stopped speaking and although he felt her go tense again, it wasn’t as much as last time. As he massaged her cheeks, he told her, ‘Someone else’s touch can often wake up bad memories from the past.’

‘What you need to do is concentrate on what you’re actually feeling right now in this room, and then the bad memories will go back to sleep.’ Ellie felt concerned at his comment, but then confident he couldn’t possibly know what his touch had awakened, she relaxed.
