As Mrs Blake paid him, he told her about tomorrows times. ‘I’ll do you some lunch at one,’ she said. ‘Invite Rebecca too if you like.’ Aaron thanked her and asked her to keep it light. ‘I’m cooking a meal for the two of us in my flat tomorrow night,’ he told her, ‘So we don’t want to be too full.’
‘I remember the first time my late husband decided to cook a meal for me, not long after we started going out together,’ she told him, smiling at the memory. ‘He meant well, he was a really lovely man, and we were very happy together. But he never could cook.’
‘I’m still a novice,’ Aaron admitted, ‘But I’ve got some good teachers, Rebecca included.’ ‘Have you proposed yet?’ she asked. ‘Not yet,’ Aaron replied, ‘But it’s not far off and we’re already looking at a house.’ ‘Good, don’t leave it too long, you never know how long you’ve got left.’ She told him.
‘Rebecca’s eighteen in a month’s time,’ he told her smiling and giving a big wink as he spoke. Mrs Blake gave him a lovely smile. As he walked home, he decided that he was going to tell Rebecca about what Ralph had told him. He wondered how she’d take it.
He thought she’d be flattered about it, but you could never be a hundred percent certain, could you. When he reached the flat, he shouted ‘Hi’ but hearing nothing assumed Ian had walked Christine home. He prepared two coffees and sat looking through the printout details of the house.
Half an hour later Ian arrived home so Aaron made their coffees. ‘Is that the house?’ Ian asked, seeing the printout. Aaron passed it over. ‘I was telling Christine what you were doing,’ he said, ‘So she wants to go house hunting now.’
‘Shouldn’t you have had a driving lesson this evening?’ he asked. ‘It’s been moved over to the morning,’ Aaron told him, ‘The instructor wants to see how I cope in the busy weekend traffic. Then I’m gardening next door to the Jacobs for the rest of the day.’
They went to bed. They now slept in their own beds most nights, with just occasional get togethers.
SATURDAY – VIDEO SHOP – MIKE, CLIFF & PETER
As Cliff and Mike were opening up, Cliff told him that Peter was joining them for lunch. ‘He was very evasive on the phone,’ Cliff said, ‘But he sounded very excited and said he had something to tell us.’ ‘It’ll be nice to see him,’ Mike said, ‘He’s a nice lad.’
Lunch time soon arrived. Peter had turned up in time to go to the chippy and as they closed for lunch, Peter was in the back room dishing out the food and making the coffees. As soon as Mike and Cliff came through, Peter gave them each a hug.
‘I’ve got some great news,’ he said as they sat round the table to eat. He was bubbling over and clearly couldn’t wait to tell them, so he started after his first mouthful. Mike smiled to see him looking so happy. ‘Last Wednesday as I came out of school, I got a call from the hospital.’ he told them.
‘They said they weren’t keeping mum overnight, but they wanted me to come in and speak to them. They assured me there was nothing wrong and I wasn’t to worry. When I got there, I was taken into Sister’s office. There was no sign of mum.’
‘I’ve got some good news for you,’ Sister said. ‘The consultant has personally given your mum a full checkup today, and as a result he’s changed her medication completely. In future, instead of daily tablets, your mum will come in here once a month for a single injection.’
