Aaron and Gordon smiled at each other hearing that. ‘Aarons just been showing me where everything is going.’ Gordon told her. ‘Well, I can see Mary’s ready to go home,’ he told them, ‘So I’ll be off. If I don’t see you before, I’ll see you for dinner on Sunday after your hike.’ he told Aaron.
He put his hand out automatically to shake hands, then changed his mind and hugged him. As he walked away, Rebecca was looking amazed. ‘What’s up?’ Aaron asked her. ‘Dad just hugged you,’ she said. ‘He hugs me and mum often, but I’ve never ever seen him hug anyone else.’
‘I thought it was lovely that he wanted to hug his daughter’s boyfriend.’ Aaron told her. That took a few seconds to sink in. Rebecca looked at him in delight. Before she could speak, Aaron asked with a big smile, ‘Will you be my girlfriend?’
‘Yes please,’ she said going straight into his arms and they kissed. This time on the lips, not caring who saw them. Gordon and Mary were back inside by now, but Sandra was still in the garden talking to Kurt. She dug him in his ribs and pointed.
The pair of them stood watching them kiss, a big smile on each of their faces. Eventually they parted. Rebecca went home with a lovely smile of her face and told her mum and dad what Aaron had just asked her. ‘I said, ‘Yes.’ she told them.
Aaron went in and had dinner with Kurt and Sandra. As soon as they sat down Aaron told them, ‘I’ve just asked Rebecca to be my girlfriend and she said, ‘Yes.’ ‘Congratulations,’ Sandra told him, you make a lovely couple.’
‘Well, we never saw that coming did we?’ she said grinning like mad at Kurt. After dinner Aaron carried on with his work in the garden and Kurt started fitting the toilet pan and cistern in the summer house. When Aaron got home, Ian saw how happy he was the moment he walked in.
‘What’s happened?’ he asked. ‘Rebecca and I are now officially boyfriend and girlfriend.’ he said, with an enormous smile. Ian congratulated him with a long hug and a kiss.
SUNDAY – HIKE
Aaron called for Rebecca, had a hug from Mary and Gordon and walked round to the Jacobs. They were pleased to see them and they all set off. Today the hike was around Buxton in the peak district national park. It took an hour and a half to drive to the meeting point.
Aaron and Rebecca sat in the back seat, hand in hand the whole way. They chatted to the Jacobs who told them they had recently celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. They also told them that they had no children.
‘We’ve always loved walking,’ Mrs Jacob told them, ‘Belonging to the club gets us out each week. We get to meet such nice people too.’ When they got out of the car, Mr Jacob told them to go off and join their friends, and they’d see them later.
They went and greeted everyone. Rebecca was introduced to the organiser who welcomed her and said he’d talk to her at lunchtime. They walked out of Buxton, seeing some of the town as they went and headed for Hollinsclough, a walk that took two hours through the countryside.
From there they crossed the Dove Valley and went up Hollins Hill, where they got lovely views for miles and could see the dramatic Dragons Back of Chrome Hill in the distance. Aaron and Rebecca walked hand in hand, or arm in arm, most of the time.
‘Before I came, did you have to walk all on your own?’ Rebecca had asked him. ‘No, never.’ he told her. ‘I was rotated between each of the three couples every half hour or so.’ ‘That’s nice.’ she said. ‘It was Alvins idea.’ he told her.
They sat on the summit and had their lunches. Four happy couples. Towards the end, the organiser came over and chatted to Rebecca. After telling him they wouldn’t be able to come on the overnight trips for a while at least, she signed up as a member.
Whilst they were eating, Aaron noticed that the Jacobs were sitting on their own eating. He asked everyone if they would mind if he invited them to sit with them next week. No one did, they all thought it was a lovely idea. ‘I’ll tell them later.’ Aaron said.
During the afternoon, as they walked Aaron and Rebecca talked the whole time. They learned a lot more about each other. When Rebecca asked him about work, he told her that he liked what he did and the people he worked with.
‘But until very recently,’ he said smiling at her, ‘I was content with that. I had no thought of a future.’ ‘And now?’ she asked. ‘Now I am suddenly dreaming of a lovely future where I’m getting married and having a family of my own.’ he told her.
‘Perhaps I need to think of getting a better job.’ ‘Be very careful, you spend a lot of time at work,’ Rebecca told him, ‘It’s important to be happy at your work or your whole life could become unhappy.’ ‘Have you ever thought about getting married?’ he asked her.
‘Yes, from time to time.’ she said. ‘But like you, I saw no prospect of it ever happening, so I never took the dreams too seriously.’ ‘And now?’ Aaron asked. ‘Now everything has changed,’ she said giving him a lovely smile. ‘All sorts of possibilities have opened up.’
‘When you get married, would you want children?’ Aaron asked. ‘Yes, I think so.’ she said, ‘One, or even two, would be nice. Perhaps if I hadn’t been an only child I would have mixed easier’ ‘My thoughts exactly.’ Aaron told her. They walked on in silence for a while, both imagining a future where they were man and wife.’
After a while, Rebecca said quietly, ‘Aaron, I’m a virgin.’ ‘I thought you probably where,’ he said, ‘I’ve never had a girlfriend either. Is that a problem.’ ‘It frightens me.’ Rebecca admitted, ‘The thought of having sex I mean.’ ‘We will never have sex.’ Aaron told her.
When she looked surprised, Aaron told her, ‘Anyone can have sex. When we reach that stage, as I hope we will sometime in the future, we won’t just have sex, we will make love.’ ‘I don’t understand.’ she told him. ‘Having sex is when a man takes his pleasure without any thought for his partner.’ Aaron told her.
‘Making love is different. It’s when two people who love each other share a bed and get physically close in a way that gives both of them equal pleasure. It only happens when they love each other so much that they are more concerned with their partners pleasure than their own.’
‘You sound so worldly.’ Rebecca told him. ‘No, I’m very much a novice.’ he answered, ‘I knew nothing about it, or a lot of other things until I met Ian. He’s taught me a lot.’ ‘He and Christine look very happy together.’ Rebecca said, looking at them arm in arm up ahead.
‘They are.’ Aaron agreed. ‘Do you think they will get married?’ she asked. ‘Yes, they will. They have already talked it through, and he already calls her parents mum and dad. Actually, so do I.’ he added with a smile, ‘I’ll take you to meet them during the week.’
‘I don’t understand.’ she said. ‘He explained how it had all happened. So now I have a mum and dad again. And an aunt and uncle too.’ he added explaining about Sandra and Kurt. ‘That’s so nice,’ Rebecca said with tears in her eyes. ‘You know such lovely people.’
‘You know you mentioned that you were frightened about sex?’ Aaron said. ‘Yes.’ Rebecca replied, looking at him. ‘Well, if or when it happens between us, you can be certain that it won’t be until you decide that you feel ready, I’ll never push you.’
‘I’m already certain of that.’ she told him smiling. ‘If it’s done properly,’ Aaron told her, ‘There are a lot of stages leading up to it. If we ever try any of them and you feel frightened or panic, you only have to say stop and I will.’
‘I’m sure about that too.’ she said with another smile. ‘Actually,’ Aaron said, ‘We have already done the first three.’ When Rebecca looked at him in surprise, he told her. ‘Step one is to say goodnight by a brief hug and a kiss on the cheek.’
