SUNDAY HIKE
When they had all assembled at the start of their hike and said hello to everyone, they started off. Alvin and Travina asked Aaron to join them to start with. They walked along with Aaron in the middle and chatted about their week.
Aaron told them how he was getting on with the garden alterations and Travina asked how the girl next door was getting on. ‘She’s fine now,’ he told them, ‘Even the burn on her hand from the electric cable has healed up, although it’s left a permanent scar.’
‘Do you see much of her?’ Alvin asked casually. ‘She always comes to the fence to say hello when I’m there,’ Aaron told them. ‘And I’ve been to dinner with her and her parents. Oh, and Sandra invited her to join us for dinner last night.’ ‘I take it you like her then.’ Alvin asked with a grin.
‘Yes, she’s lovely.’ Aaron told them, ‘Actually, you’ll meet her on Wednesday as I’ve invited her to come to the operatic group with me.’ ‘Doesn’t she like walking?’ Sandra asked. ‘Yes, she does,’ Aaron told them, ‘I would have invited her today, but there’s no more room in Hughs car.’
‘That’s a pity,’ Alvin told him, ‘Well, we’ll look forward to meeting her on Wednesday.’ The conversation moved onto other things. Whilst they were having their lunch Alvin got up and wandered off to speak to the hike organiser.
After a chat, the organiser looked in his record book, then he took Alvin over to talk to an older couple. After a conversation with them, Alvin returned and pointed them out to Aaron. ‘That’s Mr and Mrs Jacobs,’ he told him. ‘They’d like to meet you. Would you go over and say hello.’
As Aaron walked over, Alvin nodded to Travina and gave her a big smile. When Aaron approached, Mr Jacobs stood up and shook his hand. Then he introduced him to his wife, and they all sat down. ‘We’ve heard all about what you did for Rebecca,’ Mr Jacobs told him, ‘It was the talk of the neighbourhood.’
‘We only live in the next road to her. Alvin has just been explaining that you wanted to invite her to join you here today, but there was no way of getting her here. We don’t come to the overnight hikes, but we rarely miss any of the others. If you and Rebecca would like to come to ours each Sunday, you’d be very welcome to travel with us.’
Aaron’s face lit up, they were in no doubt how much he loved the idea. He thanked them profusely and told them he hadn’t actually asked Rebecca yet, because he couldn’t get her here, but he felt sure she would love to come.
‘Here’s our address and phone number,’ Mr Jacobs said, giving him a card. ‘If she says yes, give me a ring and let me know. We usually leave home at nine o’clock unless it’s an early start.’ They stood up and Aaron shook his hand. Then he gave Mrs Jacobs a hug. ‘Thank you so much.’ he told them.
When he returned to the other’s they all looked at him, wondering what was happening, only Alvin and Travina had the slightest idea. ‘It’s arranged,’ Aaron said to Alvin, ‘Thank you so much.’ Alvin then told them all that Sandra had rung them last night and explained that Alvin wanted to bring Rebecca to the hiking group. But he couldn’t because there was no more room in the car.’
‘She asked if I could check with the organiser and see if anyone else in the group lived nearby.’ he told them. ‘Mr and Mrs Jacobs live in the next road to Rebecca. They will bring them along next Sunday.’ ‘All I have to do now is to ask Rebecca.’ Aaron told them.
Everyone was delighted for him. ‘The Jacobs don’t come to the overnight ones,’ Aaron told them, ‘But that’s probably just as well. For now, at least.’ he added. Everyone laughed.
MONDAY - AARON AT KURT & SANDRAS
When he arrived, Aaron gave Kurt and Sandra an even bigger hug and kiss than usual. ‘Thanks to you,’ he said, ‘Mr & Mrs Jacobs in the next road are going to take me and Rebcca to the hike each Sunday. If she wants to come of course, I haven’t asked her yet.’
‘She will,’ Sandra told him, sounding very certain, ‘I’m sure of it.’ After their light dinner, Aaron and Kurt went out to carry on in the garden. Kurt was finishing off re-building the inspection chamber where he’d connected the new drain into.
Aaron was busy preparing the bases for all the children’s equipment he was going to fit. After they had been out there an hour, Rebecca appeared at the fence and stood watching them. As soon as Aaron spotted her, his face lit up, and he went over to see her.
‘I missed you yesterday.’ she told him. ‘I missed you too,’ Aaron told her, ‘But it needn’t happen next Sunday.’ As Rebecca looked puzzled, Aaron asked her if she’d like to come with him. ‘But how will we get there?’ she asked.
‘Do you know a Mr & Mrs Jacobs from the next road?’ he asked. ‘Vaguely.’ she told him. ‘Well, they are in our hiking group.’ Aaron told her. ‘Thanks to Sandra, Alvin got their address from the hike organiser and introduced me to them.’
‘When he explained the problem, they offered immediately to take us each Sunday, except for the overnight ones which they don’t go to.’ ‘Yes, I’d love to come.’ she said looking very happy. ‘Go and check with your mum and dad if it’s ok with them.’ Aaron told her.
‘Then I’ll ring the Jacobs and tell them. This is a list of what you would need,’ he told her, handing her a piece of paper. ‘We’ll need to be at their house, ready to leave at nine o’clock.’ he added. ‘Most times we’re home between six and seven.’
‘Soon she was back at the fence beaming. ‘Mum and dad said yes,’ she told him. ‘They also suggested that I invite you back afterwards. They’ll delay dinner and we can all eat together.’ ‘Tell them thank you, and I’d love to.’ Aaron told her.
He leaned over the fence and gave her a quick kiss. ‘Next Sunday will be the best hike I’ve ever been on.’ he told her.
TUESDAY – SORTING OUT THE BULLIES
That evening, Lewis got a long email from Seb telling him what had happened at school that day ‘At breaktimes, Edward, Tony, Jim and I had got into the habit of sticking close together.’ Seb said, ‘It had worked pretty well, for apart from some verbal abuse, Drake and his two cronies had left us alone, presumably not wanting to tackle a group.’
‘They had been seen bullying several of the others regularly, including young Les, the one who had been too scared to join in training, but had agreed to act as a decoy, to keep the teacher on playground duty out of the way.’
‘We had decided that today we were going to try to bring it all to an end. After lunch I deliberately went over to a deserted corner of the grounds and sat reading a book. As we’d hoped. Drake and his pals soon spotted that I was alone and headed over.’
‘They were so eager to reach me, that they failed to notice that Edward, Jim and Tony were also heading over, from three different directions. Les followed at a discrete distance. As they approached me, I put my book down and stood up.’
‘Drake stopped three feet away from me and sneered, ‘No pals to save you today,’ he said. ‘You’ve been avoiding us, so we’ll have to give you some extra bruises to make up for the ones you’ve missed.’ He looked very pleased at the idea. The other two were standing each side of him just waiting for Drake to tell them to grab me.’
‘He never usually hit anyone unless they were being held. ‘I think it’s time you stopped bullying and grew up.’ I told him. For a moment he looked stunned, he wasn’t used to anyone answering him back. Then he looked really mad and shouted, ‘Grab him.’ A lot of things happened at once then.’
‘As if from nowhere, Jim and Tony appeared at one side and grabbed both arms of the one we considered was the strongest of Drakes other two. Edward appeared at the other side and grabbed the other one in an arm lock. He was soon heard pleading for mercy as Edward twisted his arm, remembering all the bruises he’d given him.’
