‘But the main thing is, is Rebecca ok now?’ ‘Yes, she is, no thanks to me. he admitted. ‘Rebecca doesn’t know about that,’ I told him. ‘I suggest that she should never find out.’ ‘Thank you,’ he said, ‘I don’t deserve your kindness.’

‘I wasn’t suggesting it for your benefit,’ I told him. ‘I like Rebecca and I wouldn’t want her to have the upset of knowing her father would have let her die, because he was too busy with his racial prejudices.’ He looked horrified at hearing that.

Pulling himself together, he said, ‘Put like that, it sounds even worse, am I really so awful?’ The last bit was said more to himself than Aaron. ‘Anyway,’ he added, ‘The doctor at the hospital told me that from what he could gather, you had started resuscitation less than a minute after it had happened.’

‘Because of that,’ he told us, ‘It’s most unlikely that there will be any lasting side effects.’ So, it’s thanks to you that we still have our daughter.’ He offered his hand. Aaron took it and they shook. ‘Please accept my heartfelt thanks and my sincere apologies.’ he told him.

‘Thank you,’ Aaron replied, ‘But I make one condition. I’m happy to accept your thanks. I’m also willing to accept your apology, but only if we both agree to immediately forget why it was ever needed.’ Rebeccas dad stood quietly, looking at him.

He was astounded at the way such a young man had handled the situation. As panic about his daughter being electrocuted had passed into relief at her being saved, he had despaired at her finding out what he had said and done.

He had never ever had any problem with coloured people of any description before. He had no idea why he should have felt or reacted as he did. Or why he had failed to realise that Aaron was doing his best to save her.

He was disgusted at his own behaviour, and he had been feeling sure that Rebecca would feel the same. Now Aaron was offering him a way out that he certainly didn’t deserve. ‘I agree,’ he said, sounding very relieved, ‘I don’t deserve it, but I agree.’

They shook hands again, and he introduced himself as Gordon. ‘You asked earlier if you were really so awful,’ Aaron reminded him. ‘Well, I don’t think you are. When Rebecca came round and sat up, she gave me such a lovely smile.’

‘But then she saw you. As she looked over at you and called out, ‘Daddy,’ the look on her face and the tone of her voice was entirely of love. I don’t believe that a really bad person could ever inspire such a reaction, even in their own child.’ ‘Thank you.’ Gordon said and turned away.

Five minutes later Rebecca appeared at the fence. Aaron went over to her and asked how she was. ‘I feel fine, thanks to you,’ she said, giving him a lovely smile. ‘Although I’m still having to put cream on the burn on my hand. Everyone has been saying how wonderful you were and that if it hadn’t been for you, I’d be dead.’

‘I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,’ Aaron told her, ‘But if I had to do it, I can’t think of a nicer person to save.’ Rebecca smiled at him, ‘Can you come over and meet my mum?’ she asked, ‘She so wants to meet you and thank you.’

Aaron climbed over, and as they headed for the back door, Rebecca took his arm. Just before they reached the door, she stopped. Turning to face him she said, ‘You are the first boy to ever kiss me on my lips.’ ‘I know it’s called the kiss of life,’ Aaron told her, ‘But it’s not like a normal kiss, I wasn’t kissing you as such. I was blowing oxygen into your lungs.’

‘Well, it’s the nearest I’ve ever come to being kissed,’ Rebecca told him, ‘So I will dream of it as a kiss.’ ‘But at the time, you weren’t even aware that I was doing it,’ Aaron told her. ‘To be able to dream about it properly, you should have at least had one proper kiss.’ He turned to face her and held his arms out.

Rebecca moved into them and as they put their arms around each other, they had a medium length kiss. As their lips parted, Rebecca put her head on his shoulder and held him tight. She was about to comment on his kiss, but she became aware that her legs had gone weak once again.

She was just about to get upset and want to go in and sit down, when it suddenly clicked. Every time her legs had gone shaky, and her heartbeat had increased, it was when she had been talking to Aaron. And after that kiss, her heart was certainly going faster than usual.

Puzzled, but relieved that she wasn’t sickening for something, Rebecca gave him a beaming smile and opened the door. As they walked in, Rebeccas mum was at the kitchen sink. ‘Mum, this is Aaron.’ she called out.

‘Her mum grabbed a towel and dried her hands, then pulled Aaron to her and hugged him. ‘It’s lovely to meet you and thank you so much for what you did.’ she told him, then gave him a kiss on his cheek. Aaron gave her a lovely smile.

Then Gordon walked in. ‘Hi Aaron,’ he said cheerfully. ‘Have you asked him yet?’ he said, looking at his wife, ‘No, I was just about to.’ she told him. Turning to Aaron she smiled at him and asked, ‘Would you come and have dinner with us one evening next week? We’d like to get to know you better, and we’d feel we were doing something to say thank you.’

‘There’s really no need,’ Aaron replied, ‘But yes, I’d love to, thank you very much.’ They settled on the following Thursday. ‘Well, it’s been really nice to meet you,’ Aaron told her, ‘But I’d better get back to work. He nodded at Gordon and gave Rebecca a big smile which she returned.

THURDSAY EVENING - FLAT - IAN & CHRISTINE

Knowing Aaron would be at Kurts, Christine had had a meal at the flat with Ian. After clearing away, they went into the bedroom and made love. Ian had only set the alarm for half an hour so when they woke up, they stayed in bed in each other’s arms.

‘Aarons been so good at making sure we get time alone,’ Christine said, ‘But I really don’t mind him being in the flat at the same time as we’re in bed, I’d hate him to think he’d been excluded from the flat or our lives.’ ‘Perhaps we should invite him to join us in bed.’ Ian said laughing.

He was joking, but he noticed that Christine seemed to be giving it some thought. He was about to say, ‘I was only joking,’ but something made him hold back and wait to see what she said next. Then she gave a sigh, ‘It’s always difficult isn’t it, matching your impulses to what is considered propriety.’

‘That’s a very deep comment,’ Ian told her. Christine looked at him and said, ‘We’re only enjoying ourselves so much because you took the trouble to teach me and overcome my nerves. I just wish we could do something similar for Aaron.’

‘Well, I have promised to teach him all about making love,’ Ian told her, ‘He’s never had a proper lesson. He knows some basics, but not enough to make a girl happy.’ ‘That’s just the same as I was.’ Christine reminded him.

‘Suppose you could teach him with a real girl, instead of just verbal instructions,’ she asked. ‘That would be a brilliant lesson for him,’ Ian agreed, ‘But where would you find anyone willing to do that?’ he asked innocently.

‘If you could find someone,’ Christine asked, ‘How do you think her boyfriend would feel about her doing something like that?’ ‘I suppose it would depend on whether he knew and liked Aaron enough to be willing to share her for a one-off special event like that.’ Ian told her.

‘After all, anyone who knew him that well would know how much he’s missed out on in his life so far. Anything that helped him get and keep a girlfriend with the hope of having his own family to follow, would be a wonderful gift to give.’

‘I don’t suppose many people would agree with doing something like that.’ Christine mused. ‘Well, in matters of love you should always follow your heart.’ Ian said. ‘Anyway, who else would ever know. But I can think of something the girl and her boyfriend would have to agree about first though.’
