SUNDAY – TWO ON A HIKE
The next morning, they awoke, had breakfast, then they had an hour’s drive to meet the rest of the hiking group. As they walked along, it was nice to be with a group of people that they knew. But it seemed so strange not to have their four close friends with them.
‘I wonder how the honeymoon’s going?’ Alvin said. ‘I’m sure they’re having a wonderful time,’ Travina replied, ‘I wonder where they have gone?’ ‘Where would you like to go on yours?’ Alvin asked her. ‘I’ve never done much travelling,’ Travina told him, ‘So I’ll let you surprise me.’
‘But as long as I’m with you, I don’t care where it is.’ Alvin immediately started planning in his mind where they would go. At the end of the day, Travina dropped him off at the flat. As they kissed goodbye, Alvin said, ‘It won’t be long before we won’t have to keep parting.’
He waved as she drove away, then went in to see if Ian was back yet and to do his weekly weigh in.
TUESDAY – FLAT – ALVIN, IAN & AARON
After work on Tuesday the three of them walked back to the flat together. Aaron had been thrilled when he had been invited in the canteen yesterday. At the flat, they all had a hug, then Alvin went to his bedroom to get changed and Aaron went for a shower.
When he returned in his T shirt and shorts, he found Alvin already sitting in the lounge dressed the same. Ian smiled at him as he passed and went for his shower. When he returned, he went straight to the kitchen as it was his week for cooking.
Alvin got up and went to set the table, so Aaron went with him and lent a hand. When they sat back down in the lounge Alvin said, ‘You’re looking very happy tonight.’ Aaron beamed at him. ‘I’m always happy when I’m here,’ he said, ‘It always feels like I’m at home, instead of in a home.’
Ian called them to the table then. They chatted as they ate, talking about their past week. Ian told Aaron about his weekend away. Alvin told him about the hike he’d been on, on Sunday. After they’d eaten, they all helped clear away, then Ian was sent to sit down as he had done the cooking.
Aaron and Alvin did the washing up together. Then they made coffee. In the lounge Alvin sat in the armchair. Ian and Aaron sat at each end of the settee. As they finished their coffees, Alvin looked over at Ian who nodded.
Alvin started off by telling Ian what Aaron had said about feeling as if he was at home when he was in the flat. ‘That was a lovely thing to say,’ Ian told him. ‘It’s a pity we haven’t got a spare bedroom, then you could move in with us. If you’d wanted to, of course.’ Ian added.
‘Oh yes,’ Aaron said, ‘I couldn’t think of anything I’d like better. I’ll be dreaming that’s really happening in bed tonight.’ Alvin smiled at him,
‘Aaron, there’s something I haven’t yet told you. Last week I got engaged to be married.’
‘Congratulations,’ Aaron said immediately, looking delighted for him, ‘I hope you’ll both be very happy.’ ‘I’m sure we will,’ Alvin told him. ‘We haven’t set an exact date yet, but when we get married, I’d like to have all my special friends there. So, you’ll be getting an invite.’
‘Oh wow,’ Aaron said, ‘My first wedding, that will be lovely, thank you.’ ‘After I’m married, I’ll be moving out and going to live with my wife Travina, in her house.’ Alvin told him. Ian and Alvin just sat quietly smiling at him. It took a few minutes before the implication registered.
‘But that means... ‘ he started to say, then stopped, not wanting to risk putting into words what he so hoped was coming. ‘That I’ll be looking for a new flat mate to share with me,’ Ian chipped in, ‘How would you like to come and live here with me?’ Aaron’s face answered for him before he could speak.
‘Yes please,’ he said and burst into tears. Ian slid along the settee and put his arm around him. As Aaron turned and hung onto him, he was still crying as he called out. ‘I’m not upset, I’m just so happy.’ When he calmed down Ian sent him to swill his face.
As he came back in, Alvin stood up and they had a hug. Then Aaron gave Ian one. They returned to sit around the dining table. ‘Now Aaron, let me tell you how it all works,’ Alvin said. He and Ian had decided the night before what the best way to handle it would be.
‘Ian is the tenancy holder of the flat.’ Alvin told him. ‘His agreement allows him to choose who shares with him and give them a tenancy agreement. ‘Before you leave tonight, he will give you a tenancy agreement and you can show it to the people in charge at the home.’
‘Tell them you’d like to accept it, point out that you and Ian work together in secure jobs and ask them how you go about it. If they mention checks, try and find out what checks they want to make. Forewarned is forearmed.’
‘I don’t expect there to be any problems, but when officialdom gets involved, you never can tell. We’ll do everything we can to help you, no matter what it is. As long as they don’t come up with any unsurmountable problems, you can move in at the latest five weeks this coming Saturday, which I expect to be my wedding day.’
‘You will then pay your share of the rent monthly to Ian, and he pays the whole rent to the landlord. Now you need to be aware that because of your age, you can’t have a tenancy agreement yourself, direct with the owner of this flat.’
‘I hope that won’t create any problem at your end. If any problems do arise, we’ll do everything we can to help you get around them, because we’d both love to see you living here. Ian over to you.’ Ian got up and fetched some papers. He passed them to Aaron.
‘The first one is your tenancy agreement,’ he told him. ‘You don’t need to sign it until you’re ready to move in. When you return it signed, you’ll need to pay me one month’s rent in advance, and a deposit equal to one month’s rent. You’ll also need to set up a standing order to pay me your rent each month afterwards.’
‘On the second page, you’ll find the rent amount and my bank details. There is also a contact number and email address for me as your landlord, plus a list of the last three bills for services as a guide for you. The services and monthly food bills shown are additional costs that you will need to share with me.’
‘Do you have a bank account and enough money to do all that?’ Aaron looked at the list. ‘Yes, I have a bank account,’ he said. Then with a big smile he added, ‘I also have enough for the first rent and deposit.’ My wages will cover the ongoing rent and other bills fine.’
‘The food bill is optional,’ Ian told him. ‘Alvin and I pay that amount each month into a kitty, and then we use the cash for all our food and drink. But you could, if you wanted to, do your own thing and cook for yourself.’
‘I’ve never done anything like this before,’ Aaron told them, ‘So I’d like to do exactly the same as you two do now. Just tell me what to do.’ ‘Don’t worry,’ Ian said, ‘I’ll guide you as we go along.’ ‘Let us know as soon as you can what the home says about it.’
‘Shall we have another coffee?’ Alvin asked. When Ian said, ‘Yes please,’ Aaron asked, ‘Could I make them?’ ‘Of course you can.’ Ian told him looking surprised. When Aaron served them with a coffee each, he said, ‘Now I really feel I’m at home.’
‘Are you still coming on the hike a week on Sunday?’ Alvin asked. ‘Yes please,’ Aaron told him, ‘I’m really looking forward to it.’ ‘Ok, I’ll let the organiser know there’ll be an extra body.’ he said. ‘Do you have walking boots and thick socks.’
‘No,’ Aaron said, ‘I’ll go and get some after work this week.’ ‘Would you like me to come with you?’ Ian asked. ‘If you wouldn’t mind,’ Aaron said looking grateful and sounding relieved.’ ‘How about we go on Thursday,’ Ian said, ‘Then we could come back here and have a takeaway.’
Aaron looked delighted and that was agreed. It was getting late by then and Aaron went and got dressed ready to leave. As he hugged each of them in turn, he was clearly reluctant to let go. Then they finished off with a group hug at the front door.
Although so sad to leave, once he was on his way back to the home with the tenancy agreement in his pocket, he was walking on air.
