As he came out of the bathroom, he had felt so embarrassed, no one at the home ever saw him dressed like this. Then seeing Ian still in his work clothes made him feel even more out of place. But when Alvin walked in dressed the same as he was, he just relaxed.
Soon Ian returned, also in T shirt and shorts. Aaron felt totally relaxed then. Alvin was the cook this week, and he soon had dinner on the table. ‘How was your weekend?’ Alvin asked him as they ate. ‘Quiet as usual.’ Aaron told them.
‘I spent a lot of it in my room, but I did have a wander around the shops on Saturday afternoon. I did think of going out for a long walk on Sunday, but it’s not the same on your own, so I didn’t bother. Oh, and I asked at the home about stopping out overnight if I went on a hike.’
‘They said it could be arranged, but someone from social services would have to meet the organiser first and approve it. I don’t want to inflict that on someone that I’ve never even met. So, if I can come with you, which I’d really like to, perhaps I could just do the one-day ones. For now, at least.’
‘That’s no problem for us,’ Alvin told him, ‘And we’d love to have you join us. So, you could start coming with us two weeks on Sunday. Anyway, who knows how your situation might change.’ After they had cleared away and washed up, Aaron insisting on helping, Alvin and Ian sat each end of the settee.
Aaron sat on the armchair facing them. As they drank their coffees, Aaron studied Alvin and Ian sitting opposite. It was the first time he had seen people with so few clothes on and been able to look at them for any period of time.
After a while he realised that he was studying them, but wasn’t feeling at all embarrassed about doing it, as he would have expected himself to be.
Then it suddenly hit him. If he was able to study them, they would be doing the same to him.
But before he could panic, he decided that didn’t embarrass him either. As he tried to figure out why it should be, Alvin asked him how he was feeling sitting there in just his shorts and T shirt. ‘To my surprise, I feel fine.’ he told them.
‘When Ian told me about it last week, I knew it wasn’t anything that I would feel able to do. Then when you invited me again this week, I wavered. Party because I was feeling so comfortable with you both, and partly because I didn’t want you to stop inviting me.’
‘We wouldn’t have done that,’ Ian told him, ‘That’s why Alvin was in his bedroom when you came out of the shower. If you had been fully dressed, I wouldn’t have called him. Alvin would then have got dressed and we would all be sitting here now fully dressed.’
‘Well, as I was drying myself, I decided to try it,’ Aaron said, ‘Although I half expected to be running back to the bathroom to get dressed once anyone saw me. Coming in here and seeing Ian still fully dressed made me start to panic, but when Alvin came in dressed the same as I was, I just relaxed.’
‘Sitting here now, I feel completely at ease.’ ‘Why was it so important to you that we didn’t stop inviting you, that you made yourself try something you didn’t think you could do?’ Ian asked him. Aaron smiled, ‘I’ve just been trying to answer that question myself.’ he told them.
‘Did you come up with an answer?’ Alvin asked. ‘Yes,’ Aaron replied. ‘I’ve never had friends like you two before,’ then he paused, thought, then said, ‘Well really, I’ve never had friends before. I love being with you both so much. I also love being here in the flat, it makes me feel like I vaguely remember feeling when I was at home, before I lost my parents.’
‘Already, I feel like I’m with someone I’ve known all my life when I’m with either of you,’ Aaron added, ‘Especially after saying goodnight to Ian last Thursday.’ Then he stopped and looked embarrassed. Ian smiled at him, ‘Because of our hug do you mean?’ he asked.
‘Yes,’ Aaron said, relieved to see that he wasn’t annoyed that he’d said anything. ‘Friends should always hug each other,’ Alvin told him. ‘It’s a way of showing how close you feel to them. I’m sorry I missed out.’ Alvin said. ‘Do you think you and I could have one now?’
Aaron glanced at Ian, who smiled and nodded. ‘Yes of course.’ he said standing up. Alvin held his arms open, and Aaron walked into them without any hesitation. They had a long hug, and as they parted Alvin told him, ‘Thank you, that was lovely.’
Ian had stood up by then and he held his arms open too. Alvin watched happily as Ian and Aaron hugged. He felt sure by now that Aaron would be an ideal flat share for Ian. When they parted, Alvin said, ‘We have to finished off with a three-way hug after that.’
All three of them wrapped their arms around each other and they hugged. When they all resumed their seats. They sat and chatted for another hour, then it was time for Aaron to leave. He went into the bathroom and got dressed.
As they reached the front door, Alvin asked him, ‘Would you like a hug before you go?’ Aaron’s face answered for him. He and Ian had a hug, then he hugged Alvin, after that they had another three-way hug. ‘Thank you so much for having me.’ Aaron told them as he turned to leave.
‘Come again next week,’ Alvin told him, ‘We’ll fix up a day during the week.’ Aaron thanked them, then walked back to the home feeling very happy and with a lovely warm feeling inside.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT – ALVIN & IAN
Ian walked home on his own, and even though it was Alvins week for cooking, he prepared their evening meal as Alvin had told him he’d be delayed and wouldn’t get in for an hour at least. After dinner they cleared up and sat on the settee with a coffee each.
Alvin told Ian, ‘I went to see the owner of the flat after work. I told him about my engagement and asked him about transferring the lease to you if I was to leave. He said he wouldn’t do that, as he had a firm policy of not granting a tenancy to anyone under twenty-one since having had problems with youngsters in the past.’
‘I assured him that nothing like that would happen with you. He said that I clearly thought the young man concerned was well behaved and trustworthy. Then he told me a story.’ ‘I knew a landlord once who had a similar problem.’ he began, ‘He refused tenancies to youngsters too.’
‘But he wanted to help on one particular occasion, so he suggested that the existing tenant continued to pay the rent and the youngster paid him. That way everyone would be happy. After all,’ he said smiling at me, ‘You’ve always paid your rent on time, so I’ve never had to contact you during your tenancy so far. So, I just assume you’re still living there.’
‘When my agent calls once a year to check the property, he only reports on the state of the property, not who is living there at the time. But if anyone did that,’ he pointed out, ‘The person holding the tenancy would be responsible for any damage, not the people living there.’
‘That’s a fascinating story,’ I told him, ‘Thank you for telling it to me.’ As I got up to go, he congratulated me on my engagement and wished me well.’ ‘But that would put all the responsibility on you, for a flat you no longer needed.’ Ian said, ‘That wouldn’t be fair.’
‘It’s not about fairness,’ Alvin told him, ‘It’s about helping someone you think is special. Besides, I’m quite sure you’d never make me regret it. And I’m as sure as I can be that Aaron wouldn’t either. However, when you and Christine get married, Aaron will still probably not be old enough to get the tenancy. But I’m sure we could find him a flat share over twenty-one, then he or she can take it over.’
‘So, do you want to do that, and are you happy to offer a flat share to Aaron?’ ‘Yes, that would be great for both of us.’ Ian told him and thanked him with a hug and a kiss. ‘What happens now?’ he asked. ‘We’ll see how Aaron feels about it when he comes for dinner next week.’ Alvin said.
