SATURDAY – HUGH & NICOLA’S WEDDING
Ian woke up, had a shower and got dressed in his one and only suit. He walked over to Christines where he got his usual lovely welcome from Christine, Nicola and their mum and dad. At ten thirty the taxi arrived to take them to the hotel where the ceremony was going to take place.
When they arrived at the hotel, they were shown into a side room to wait. Nicola’s mum and Ian went through to meet all the others. Ian was introduced to Hughs mum and dad. Then Travina and Alvin were introduced to everyone.
‘They all took their places, and as the music signalled the bride arriving, they all stood up. Hugh was up front with his best man. Nicola walked down the aisle on her dad’s arm, with Christine coming behind her as bridesmaid.
Alvin, Travina and Ian were all thinking, ‘That will be me soon.’ The ceremony went well and soon Hugh was kissing his new wife. Ian was sitting next to her mum and after she had dabbed her eyes, Ian took her hand.
He got a lovely smile from her for doing so. After the ceremony everyone took turns congratulating the happy couple. Then they all moved into the dining room for the wedding breakfast. At three o’clock it was announced that the bride and groom would be leaving shortly.
Everyone took the opportunity to go up to them and say goodbye. Travina had managed to reach her safety pin without anyone noticing.
After she put her engagement ring back on, her and Alvin went up and said goodbye to Nicola and Hugh.
Then Alvin told them, we have something to tell you before you go. As Travina showed them her hand, Alvin said, ‘We’re engaged.’ ‘That’s lovely news, we’re so happy for you.’ the bride and groom told them, both looking delighted.
Knowing Ian had already said goodbye to Nicola and Hugh, they went over to him. ‘We have something to tell you,’ Alvin told him. ‘Travina and I are engaged.’ Ian didn’t look at all surprised. He admired the ring and congratulated them.
‘We haven’t set a date yet,’ Alvin said, ‘But I’ll go and have a word with the landlord next week about you taking over the tenancy. We’ll give serious thought to finding you someone to share with you then.’ Alvin winked at him as he said that, so Ian guessed he hadn’t mentioned Aaron to Travina yet.
At that point it is often the custom for the bride to stand with her back to the guests and throw her bouquet over her shoulder. Myth says that whoever catches it will get married soon. But Nicola had had a special one made.
The best man announced, ‘The bride will now pass on her bouquet.’ ‘I’m going to do it in a different way to usual.’ Nicola announced. She held her bouquet up for all to see and pulled the ribbon. The bouquet fell into two separate bouquets.
‘I’m going to give each of them to ladies that I would like to see married, she announced. ‘The first one is for my good friend Travina.’ As she handed it over Nicola told everyone, ‘I had no idea until five minutes ago that she and Alvin have just got engaged.’
That brought a cheer, applause and lots of congratulations. ‘The other one is for my lovely sister.’ As she handed it over, she grinned at Ian and said, ‘No pressure, Ian.’ That also got a laugh. Then everyone waved the bride and groom off.
Travina and Alvin set off back to Travina’s. Ian and Christine returned with her mum and dad. The talk on the way back was on how well everything had gone. Back at Christines, they sat in the lounge having a coffee.
‘Christine and I are going to go down south next weekend,’ Ian told her mum and dad. ‘I want my mum and my aunt to meet the girl I intend to marry.’ The smiles on her mum and dads faces made it clear how much they liked hearing that. Not that there had been any doubt.
‘I haven’t proposed properly yet,’ Ian told them. ‘But Christine and I love each other and want to spend the rest of our lives together. We have discussed it, and getting married is something we would like to do before too long.’
They both got hugs from her mum and dad, and Ian was told that if he wanted to call them mum and dad, they would love it. ‘I’ve been struggling not to do that, ever since I first met you,’ Ian told them. ‘Thanks mum and dad.’ More hugs all round at that.
Christine and Ian spent the rest of the evening with her mum and dad talking about the possibility of getting married sometime later in the year. They also discussed the ins and outs of them buying their own home. As Ian walked back to the flat, he felt very happy with his life.
SUNDAY – FOUR ON A HIKE
Sunday morning Ian walked round to Christines, and they were both picked up by Alvin and Travina. Today’s hike was closer to home, so they only had a half hours drive before meeting up with the group. When they arrived, Alvin told the organiser who had first introduced Travina to him, about their engagement.
‘Can I tell everyone else?’ he asked. ‘Certainly.’ Alvin told him. The organiser announced it to the group, and everyone clapped and congratulated them. They set off walking, today on a nice level path through the countryside. At lunchtime the four of them sat together eating their butties.
Ian told Alvin and Travina that he’d booked the train and hotel for next weekend to take Christine to meet his mum. ‘There’ll just be the two of us left then,’ Travina said. ‘We’ll miss you.’ ‘We should be back to normal with all six of us the week afterwards, for the two-day hike.’ Christine said.
After lunch they did their usual and split up. Alvin walked with Christine and Ian walked with Travina. ‘It’s very contagious this wedding thing, isn’t it?’ Christine said jokingly as they set off. ‘Yes,’ Alvin told her. ‘But it’s one thing I’m glad to catch.’
‘Me too,’ she told him. They smiled at each other. Christine felt sure Ian would have kept Alvin up to date on where they were up to. ‘You realise it’s all your fault,’ she joked, ‘If you hadn’t decided Ian needed more exercise and started him hiking, he and I would never have met.’
‘What made you take it up?’ Alvin asked. ‘Do you remember Nicola getting a photo of the four of you?’ ‘Yes, I think it was only on our second trip.’ Alvin said. ‘Well, they had been telling mum and dad about these two lovely men they had met and become friendly with.’ Christine told him.
‘I didn’t pay much attention at the time, even when the photo appeared and was shown round. But when it was hung up in Nicola’s bedroom, I went in with her to see it, just after she had put it up.’ ‘That’s Alvin, she said pointing to you. That’s Ian, he’s Alvins flat share and they both work in the same store, she added pointing to Ian.’
‘As soon as I saw Ian properly, my heart felt funny. After she had gone out later, I went back into her room and studied the photo. My heart felt funny again, so I went straight out and bought myself a pair of hiking boots. I wanted to meet him and see if he had the same effect on me in the flesh.’
‘He did, but at first, I didn’t think he’d really noticed me. I felt quite upset, but when he asked me out, I was over the moon. You know the rest.’ she said. ‘Does Ian know all that?’ Alvin asked. ‘No.’ Christine told him. ‘Well, he won’t hear it from me.’ Alvin told her.
‘That’s something you can choose to share with him in the future, or not, as you see fit.’ Christine smiled at him and took his arm as they walked on. As Travina and Ian walked together, Travina told him, ‘I’m sorry to be the one disrupting your life by taking Alvin away.’
‘I couldn’t love him more if he was my dad,’ Ian told her, ‘And I’ll miss him so much. But I can see how happy you two are together and that makes me happy too.’ ‘Well, I’m sure we’ll all keep in touch,’ Travina told him, ‘But just remember that you and Christine will always be welcome at our house.’
‘Thank you.’ Ian said offering his arm. As she took it and they walked on, Ian told her, ‘And you two will always be welcome at our house too.’ Then he added with a grin, ‘When we have one, that is.’ Soon after Alvins half hour alarm went off and they returned to their own partners.
Knowing they hadn’t far to travel home and would be back at a reasonable time, Christine had invited them all back to have Sunday dinner with her mum and dad. They had a lovely meal, and Travina fitted in well.
