‘I think so,’ Travina told him. ‘I’m just concerned that I could be falling for the company instead of the person.’ ‘Well only you can decide that.’ Hugh told her, ‘But for what it’s worth I think you make an ideal couple and I know Nicola, Christine and Ian all think the same.’
Travina smiled at him, ‘Thank you,’ she told him, ‘That has helped me a lot.’ Ian asked Nicola how the wedding plans were going as they walked along. Nicola told him where they were up to, then she said, ‘In case you haven’t realised, mum and dad like you a lot.’
‘I know,’ he said smiling, ‘They made that very clear the first time I met them.’ ‘I already struggle not to call them mum and dad at times.’ ‘You seem to be getting on well with my sister too,’ she said innocently. ‘Yes, she’s lovely and we get along really well,’ Ian said.
‘We’re growing closer each time we meet.’ ‘Closer?’ Nicola asked stressing the word. Ian smiled at her. ‘Not that close,’ he assured her, ‘Not just yet anyway. But don’t worry about her.’ ‘I don’t,’ she said, ‘I can’t think of anyone I’d rather she was with, in life or in bed.’
Alvin had set his alarm for half an hour. When it went off, they all changed back to their own partner. Later they all agreed it had been good to have some time with someone else, and they would do it on each hike in future.
When they parted, Travina got longer hugs than ever from everyone. Alvins of course was the longest. In the car on the way back, everyone seemed to be extra cheerful, and they all chatted happily. As they got nearer to home, they saw a restaurant, so they pulled in and had a lovely late Sunday Roast.
WEDNESDAY – OPERATIC GROUP
As soon as Alvin and Ian arrived, Sandra and Kurt came over to them looking very excited and greeted them with the usual hugs. Then Sandra said quietly so no one else could hear her, ‘I still haven’t come on.’ ‘Have you done a test yet?’ Alvin asked.
‘No,’ Sandra said. ‘We weren’t sure how long we should leave it after missing my period, so we thought we’d give it a few weeks more yet.’ ‘I’m sure I read recently that they work immediately after you miss your period.’ Alvin told her.
‘Why don’t you buy a kit ready and ask the chemist.’ ‘We’ll do that after work tomorrow.’ they agreed. They all had an air of excitement for the rest of the evening, even Ian. ‘We’ll let you know tomorrow night.’ Kurt told them as they parted.
THURSDAY – FLAT
Alvin and Ian walked home from work together as usual. It was Alvins week to cook, so whilst Ian went for his shower, Alvin stripped to T shirt and shorts as they usually did and prepared dinner. Before it was ready the doorbell rang.
Ian answered it and found a very excited looking Sandra and Kurt outside. ‘Come in.’ he said stepping back. As soon as he had closed the door, he gave them both a hug. He led them into the lounge just as Alvin came out of the kitchen.
Sandra couldn’t wait to greet him, ‘The test was positive, I’m pregnant.’ she cried out and threw herself into Alvins arms. As Alvin hugged her and congratulated her, Ian gave Kurt a hug. ‘Congratulations.’ he told him. ‘Sandra picked up a test kit on the way home from work.’ he told them.
‘The chemist said we could use it right away, so as soon as I got home Sandra did the test. We sat watching the test strip as it turned blue. We couldn’t believe it at first, then we just hugged and cried on each other’s shoulders.’
‘We were going to ring and tell you,’ Sandra said, ‘But then we thought you deserved to be told in person.’ ‘Have you eaten yet?’ Ian asked. When they said no, Alvin told them to sit down. He and Ian went into the kitchen to prepare some extra food.
As they ate, Sandra and Kurt couldn’t stop smiling. Their happiness filled the whole room. They all worked out when the baby was likely to be born. Sandra said she would make an appointment to see her GP this week.
‘Have you decided on any names yet?’ Ian asked. ‘Not yet,’ Sandra said, ‘Although I don’t think we’ll have any problem with a boy’s name.’ she added, grinning at Alvin, ‘But we can’t think of any girl’s names.’ ‘What about your mothers names?’ Ian suggested.
‘My mum was Nancy,’ Kurt said. ‘Mine was Winifred,’ Sandra told them. ‘Ok,’ Ian said with a smile, ‘it seemed like a good idea.’ They all laughed. ‘How about looking at all the famous people that you like and picking one of their names.’ Ian suggested.
‘We both love ‘Murder She Wrote’ by Angela Lansbury,’ Kurt said looking at Nicola, ‘Angela sounds nice.’ ‘Yes, I like that,’ Sandra said, ‘Ok, unless we come up with anything else, that’s what it’ll be. A or A, Angela or Alvin.’
Ian looked at Alvin in surprise. He realised immediately that the announcement hadn’t surprised Alvin in the least. ‘That’s a nice choice,’ he said, ‘Who knows, perhaps you’ll have one of each. Do you have any twins in the family?’ Ian asked looking at Sandra.
‘I can’t think of any,’ she said, ‘How about you.’ There was a long pause then Kurt said, ‘No, I don’t think so.’ Something in Ian’s brain puzzled him, but he couldn’t place what it was. After trying to think he gave up and dismissed it as being unimportant.
After the meal, Sandra and Kurt left, still overcome with excitement. Alvin and Ian cleared away and washed up then had a coffee sitting on the settee. ‘That was lovely news,’ Ian said, ‘I’m so happy for them. You must feel very proud that they want to call a boy after you.’
‘They’re like family to me,’ Alvin told him, ‘Just like you are too.’ Ian smiled at him, ‘Then like me, they’re very lucky.’ he said. When they were in bed, Alvin told him that as he was away the following night, they’d do the weekly weigh in on Saturday instead.
‘Or you can do it yourself tomorrow.’ he suggested. ‘No, I’ll wait for you.’ Ian told him, ‘It’s sort of special with the two of us.’ Alvin pulled him close and kissed him. As Ian cuddled up to his side, he asked, ‘Are you excited about tomorrow night?’
‘Yes, very, but I’m nervous too,’ Alvin said. ‘Travina has had twelve years with a husband who was a good lover. I don’t know how she’ll think I compare.’ ‘You’ll be fine,’ Ian said, ‘At the worst, if Stuart was the best lover in the world, you’ll be equal to him.’
Alvin felt so pleased with the compliment and kissed him again. They soon fell asleep in each other’s arms, both dreaming about tomorrow night.
FRIDAY – ALVIN
When they got home after work, they both had a shower, then Alvin packed a small bag and the two of them set out. Alvin to the bus stop, and Ian to collect Christine. When they parted, Ian told him to enjoy himself.
On the bus to Travina’s Alvin was as excited as a schoolboy going on his first date. And as nervous. When he arrived, after a long hug and a kiss Travina asked, ‘Do you want to put your bag in the bedroom, or are you still undecided?’
‘In the bedroom please,’ Alvin replied. That got him another hug and a kiss. In the bedroom Travina said, ‘I usually sleep that side, is that ok with you?’ ‘I’m happy either side.’ Alvin told her. They went back to the dining room and had their meal.
Travina had done a starter of small pieces of deep-fried Brie in breadcrumbs. When they had eaten it, they sat and chatted whilst they finished the glass of white wine they had had with it. Then Travina told him to stay where he was.
She cleared the dishes and after a short period in the kitchen appeared with a main course of fillet steak, served with chips. A brandy and cream sauce had been poured over the steak. Broccoli and cauliflower were there too. After putting them down she poured them a glass of red wine to go with it.
There was silence whilst they ate, and both had soon cleared their plates. Next Travina served them a small trifle each with lots of whipped cream on the top. But they hadn’t finished yet. Next came a selection of cheese and biscuits with a glass of port.
