As he stood up to go, Ian said, ‘I owe you for the meal.’ ‘No, you don’t,’ Alvin said, ‘This evening you’re my guest.’ He put his hand out intending to shake hands, but Ian came to him and gave him a hug. ‘Thank you so much.’ he said.
Then he stepped back in panic. ‘I’m so sorry,’ he said looking horrified, ‘I don’t know what made me do that.’ ‘It’s fine, don’t worry,’ Alvin told him, ‘It’s always nice to have a hug. Apart from your mum, when was the last time you had a hug?’
Still looking worried, Ian thought for a moment then said, ‘Just over a year ago. It was off my dad not long before he died.’ ‘And I’ll bet you’ve been dreaming about having another one from him ever since.’ Alvin said. Ian looked up at him and nodded, still looking bothered.
‘When you give someone a spontaneous hug like you just did, do you know what your brain is trying to tell you?’ Alvin asked him. ‘No.’ Ian said looking a bit happier at seeing Alvin wasn’t upset about it. ‘Your brain is telling you that you want to be friends with the person you hugged.’
After Ian had worked that out, his face lit up. ‘Yes, please.’ he said. ‘Well to cement the friendship, I should now give you a hug back.’ Alvin said as he held his arms open. Ian came straight into them, and they both hugged. As they parted, Ian looked so happy.
‘Now we are friends,’ Alvin told him, ‘Anytime you feel like you need a hug, you can have one, understood?’ ‘Yes, thank you.’ Ian said beaming at him.
THURSDAY – WORKS CANTEEN
Alvin and Ian had their lunch together. Once they were seated Ian handed Alvin his signed tenancy agreement. ‘I’ve transferred the first payment to you,’ he said, ‘And I’ve set up the standing order. If it’s ok with you, I’ll move some of my stuff in over the weekend. Then I’ll move in on Wednesday.’
Alvin fished in his pocket and then handed him a set of keys and a card. ‘There’s your keys,’ he told him, ‘And on the card is your new address and post code. Let yourself in whenever you want. How did your mum take it?’ ‘When I told her I’d found somewhere, she burst into tears.’ Ian told him.
‘Then after I had told her about you, and how you’d said I should invite her round to see the flat and let her meet you to put her mind to rest, she seemed so much happier. She said you sounded like a really nice person.’
‘Is it ok if I bring mum and some of my stuff around Friday evening?’ Ian asked. ‘Yes, of course,’ Alvin said, ‘But you don’t need to ask permission. It’s your home now, you can come and go as you please.’ ‘We’ll call at seven then.’ Ian told him. ‘I’ll have the kettle on ready.’ Alvin said.
FRIDAY EVENING
Just after seven, Alvin heard a key in the door followed by a shout, ‘It’s Ian.’ He was introduced to Ian’s mum, then he told Ian to give her a tour of the flat, whilst he made them a drink. As they sat and chatted Alvin told Ian’s mum what a sensible young man he seemed.
‘He has lovely manners and he’s a credit to you.’ he told her. ‘I’m sure he’d probably cope fine on his own, but I’ll be really glad of his company so we can look after each other.’ As he saw them out, Alvin told her not to worry, Ian would be fine.
SATURDAY
Alvin got back from his morning food shop just as Ian was arriving with another suitcase full. ‘This is my second trip today,’ he told him. ‘I’m just putting everything on the bed until it’s all here, then I’ll sort it out.’ ‘Well, if you need a hand with anything, you only have to ask.’ Alvin told him. ‘Remember that’s what friends are for.’
Ian gave him a beaming smile, then as he hesitated, Alvin grinned and told him, ‘Go on, ask, I promise I won’t bite.’ ‘Could we have another hug.’ Ian asked going very red. ‘Yes, I’d love to have one.’ Alvin said holding his arms out. Ian rested his head against Alvins shoulder and put his arms around his waist. Alvin put his arms around Ian’s shoulders.
‘This feels so nice,’ Ian said, ‘And I feel so happy here with you.’ They hugged for a while, then as they parted, Ian told him, ‘As we walked home last night, mum said what a lovely person you where, and she felt so much happier about leaving me now. I’ll always be in your debt for that.’ he said.
‘I really appreciate what you just said,’ Alvin told him, ‘But friends don’t have debts, they do things for each other simply because they are friends.’ As Ian looked chastened, Alvin assured him, ‘Cheer up, I’m not telling you off or criticising you, I’m just trying to teach you. That’s something else friends do for each other. I’m sure I’ll learn things from you too.’
Ian looked happy again. ‘You don’t have a lot of confidence in yourself, do you?’ Alvin said. ‘No.’ Ian said looking sad. ‘Well, if you’ll let me, I’d like to change that for you.’ Alvin told him. ‘Could you really?’ Ian asked his eyes lighting up, ‘That would be wonderful.’
‘Leave it with me,’ Alvin said, ‘Let’s get you settled in first, then I’ll help you in lots of ways.’ When Ian said he was going back for another load, Alvin said, ‘I’d invite you to stop for a meal when you come back, but I think you should spend as much time as you can with your mum if she’s leaving on Wednesday.’
WEDNESDAY NIGHT - ALVIN & IAN
When Alvin got home after work, he opened the door to a lovely smell of cooking. Ian heard him come in and came out of the kitchen to greet him. ‘I had the day off,’ he explained, ‘So that I could go with mum to the station and see her off.’
‘Then I came back here and sorted all my stuff out, most of which is now in the wardrobe and drawers. Then I thought I’d cook you a meal. I wasn’t sure what you liked so I had a look in the freezer and saw chicken goujons. So, I’ve done them with some chips plus cauliflower in a cheese sauce.’
‘And it helped in easing how upset you feel about your mum going.’ Alvin said, holding his arms out. As Ian came into them, he burst into tears. As Alvin held him close, he sobbed his heart out. Alvin just stroked the back of his head and let him cry it out.
When he’d finished crying, Alvin told him to go and wash his face. ‘I feel such a fool,’ Ian said avoiding Alvins eyes. ‘Look at me,’ Alvin demanded. When they were looking at each other Alvin smiled. ‘When you cry with a friend, no one else ever finds out about it.’ he told him.
‘Crying is nature’s way of relieving stress, so it’s good for you. What’s more, the reason you’re upset is perfectly understandable. So no, you are not a fool. You are a young man who loves his mum and will miss her. There’s nothing at all wrong with that.’
‘Because you are growing up, you have to learn to cope with it, but that doesn’t make it any easier. Just remember you’re not alone.’ He hugged a bit tighter and felt Ian respond. ‘Now go and wash your face, then check your food, it smells far too good to let it spoil.’
They had a lovely meal, Alvin opening a bottle of wine, ‘To celebrate your arrival.’ he told Ian. Ian had made a banana split for their dessert. Afterwards, Alvin said he’d clear up and make the coffee, but when Ian objected, they agreed to do it together.
Sitting on the settee afterwards with a coffee, they discussed showers. Ian said he preferred his in the evening, as he was often sweaty after a day of physical labour. Alvin said he preferred his in the morning before sitting in an office all day, so that worked out well.
‘You look worn out,’ Alvin said, ‘Why don’t you go and have a shower, get ready for bed and come and have a coffee with me before you settle down.’ ‘What! in my night things?’ Ian said sounding horrified. ‘Would that bother you?’ Alvin asked? ‘Yes,’ he admitted. ‘I’m very shy.’
