‘But we don’t want to upset you.’ Bert said. ‘Until I invited Gordon to spend weekends with me,’ I told them, ‘I hadn’t realised how lonely I had become. Although I’ve loved his company and looked on him as a son, from the moment he and Alison met, I knew it wouldn’t be long before I would lose him.’

‘I had already decided that the moment that happened, I was going to move and look for a flat share so that at least I would have some company. I think they will love your suggestion and I’ve no doubt that they will accept your offer, so I’ll start looking this week.’

‘It will be so good for Gordon to have a proper home.’ I told them, ‘You’re a lovely couple and will make him a proper mum and dad.’ ‘You wouldn’t move far away, would you?’ Louise asked. ‘Well, I had thought of travelling a bit,’ I said. ‘But I’ll definitely be here for the wedding.’ I added with a smile.’
