He looked around him seeming puzzled as to where he was. Then as if it had just come back to him, he got off the trolley, picked up his T shirt and pulled in on. He was about to undo his belt to tuck it in but changed his mind.
He picked up his porter’s jacket but then he thought better of it. Throwing it onto the trolley, he left the room, his T shirt still on the outside of his trousers. They all went out and stood behind the reception desk. A few minutes later Kurt came walking past on his way to the main exit.
The three of them found something to look at on the desk as he came past, then watched him leave. ‘He seems to be walking ok.’ Don said with a grin. Jake looked puzzled at the comment, but guessed it was connected to whatever Don was going to tell him later.
After Kurt had gone, Danny said, ‘I’ll go up and recover my camera then drop Kurt’s resignation in. Thank you both of you for your support. Between us we’ve saved an awful lot of girls from being raped in the future, even though none of them will ever know about it.’
‘We’ve also left his previous victims at worst wondering why they had a nightmare, instead of trying to cope with the memory of being raped.’ After collecting his camera, he called in to see the C.E.O. He handed over Kurt’s resignation.
‘He was injecting the women to knock them out,’ Danny told him. ‘Then raping them in a storeroom. He has raped five so far and today he was about to rape his sixth when we caught him at it. His victim was returned to her ward unharmed and knowing nothing about it.’
‘It turns out that Kurt is not his real name as he served time for raping two young girls. He is actually wanted under his own name for breaking the conditions of his licence.’ ‘So, it’s all going to be public after all then.’ David said sounding resigned to it.
‘No,’ Danny said, ‘I’ve let him go and convinced him never to set foot here again. He’s also going to move out of the area within a month.’ ‘Doesn’t that mean he’ll just start raping others in a different place?’ David asked.
‘No.’ Danny told him. ‘I’d rather not tell you why, but I can assure you he will never ever rape anyone ever again.’ ‘I’m intrigued,’ David said with a smile, ‘But I think perhaps it’s better that I don’t know.’ Then as it suddenly occurred to him, he asked, ‘Where did he get his anaesthetic from.’
‘He forced someone in the hospital to get it for him.’ Danny told him. ‘He gave into pressure and provided him with the six that Kurt has used. But he had refused to give him anymore, although we’ll never know if he could have resisted further requests.’
‘I’m going to sort him out next. I’m sure he won’t do it again and it will be a good learning lesson for him. He’ll also have my contact number, but I doubt that he’ll need any help in the future.’ David came round his desk and shook his hand. ‘Thank you on my own behalf, and for the hospital.’ he told him.
‘Jake and Don on reception played an essential part too,’ Danny told him. ‘I also used your name to persuade maintenance to make an essential little gadget for me. This is the maintenance man’s name.’ he said handing a card over. ‘It wouldn’t do any harm to let them know their efforts were appreciated.’
‘Consider it done.’ David told him as he showed him out. The next day Danny had no free time, but the day after he visited the hospital pharmacy. He introduced himself to the head pharmacist and said he was interested to see how all the medicines were prepared and turned up on the wards.
He was delighted at Dannys interest and took pleasure in showing Danny round. As they came to anyone, he introduced them. There were at least two dozen people working at different counters preparing medicines. Half were thirty plus and the other half younger.
By the time he had had the grand tour, Danny had met and been introduced to two thirds of the staff. Not a single Charles amongst them. When the chief told him that he thought he’d shown him everything, Danny thanked him.
‘It will be nice in future,’ Danny told him, ‘To be able to picture real people when medicines arrive. And to recognise some of the people when they do a delivery to the ward. ‘I don’t want to keep you from your work any longer.’ Danny told him, ‘Would you mind if I just had a last wander around before I go?’
‘Please do,’ he was told and was left to it. Danny wandered round slowly, picking out people he hadn’t yet been introduced to. He talked to a lady after every two men so it wouldn’t look obvious. Eventually he came to a young man who was filling small tubs of pills.
He looked very much like the young man who’s pictures he had in his phone, but of course he looked very different with all his clothes on. So, he stopped and watched him without speaking so he didn’t lose his concentration. Then when he spotted Danny watching him, he stopped. ‘Hi, I’m Danny,’ he said holding his hand out, ‘I’m a trainee doctor just having a look round.’
‘Nice to meet you,’ he said, ‘We don’t get many visitors here, ‘Oh, I’m Charles.’ he said. ‘Are you the only Charles in pharmacy?’ Danny asked. When he said yes, looking puzzled, Danny told him, ‘Pretend that you are showing me something on the desk and listen carefully.’
‘I’m putting my card down on the desk.’ Danny told him as he slipped it out of his hand. ‘Give me a text when you can, so we can arrange a meeting. I have some very good news for you about Kurt Johnson. As Charles looked terrified, Danny said loudly, ‘Thank you Charles, that’s very interesting.’
Then he continued his tour, speaking to three more pharmacists before returning and thanking the chief once more. He went away happy to have found and made contact with Charles and pleased to have seen around pharmacy.
At five past five Dannys phone pinged. ‘Hi this is Charles.’ it said. Short and to the point. ‘Are you still at the hospital?’ Danny replied. ‘Yes, I was just about to leave.’ came the reply. ‘Can you meet me in the hospital park in ten minutes please?’ Danny asked. ‘Ok.’ Charles replied immediately. Clearly, he was anxious.
Ten minutes later Danny was shaking hands with a very worried looking Charles in the hospital park. ‘Shall we sit down.’ Danny said, knowing from Kurt’s description that this was the bench where Charles and Kurt had met up.’
‘For what you have done, you could lose your job and go to prison.’ Danny told him. Charles looked terrified. ‘But as I know how you were tricked into doing it, if you are completely honest with me, none of that need happen.’
‘But you should know that the six hypodermics you got for Kurt were used to knock out six women so he could rape them. He was caught preparing to rape the sixth one. Had he succeeded, he would have been on to you this week to supply him with some more.’
‘Are all the ladies, ok?’ Charles asked. ‘Yes,’ Danny told him, ‘They are all coping with it well, and I don’t anticipate any long-term harm.’ ‘I guessed he was up to no good with them,’ Charles said, ‘I just had this hope that he would only be using them with his girlfriend.’
‘I’m afraid he doesn’t have one,’ Danny told him, ‘He just uses women for sex when he feels like it, often by force. Megan was just made up for your benefit.’ ‘I’ve been such an idiot,’ Charles said, ‘He seemed so nice when I first met him.’
‘He didn’t set out to meet you deliberately, Danny told him, ‘He did like you, but once he realised you could be a source of anaesthetic injections, he set out deliberately to trap you. But even so he genuinely enjoyed a lot of what you did together, because he was doing it with you.’
‘When he asked you for more, he intended offering you the chance to join him on one of his rapes so you could have sex too.’ ‘I could never do anything like that by force.’ Charles said sounding horrified. ‘That’s what Kurt said you’d probably say.’ Danny told him smiling.
‘What would you have done about his demand for more?’ Danny asked. ‘I’ve been trying to decide that ever since,’ Charles said. ‘I was determined not to give him anymore, but how could I refuse.’ ‘Because of the photos he took, you mean?’ Danny asked.
