‘When we raided the importers yard, everything went awry. As we went into the yard after the courier had left, the owner arrived unexpectedly and for an unknown reason the courier returned, got spooked and fled. Aiden dealt with the yard. Lew and I put the owner in his car, then whilst Lew went away with the owner, I set off after the Courier.’
‘I had only gone a mile when my back tyre burst. I rang Reg, the only other person available. I sent him after the courier, telling him to nab him somewhere quiet which he did. At this time, I hadn’t responded to any of Reg’s hints about what he knew.’
‘When I reached him, I told him, ‘It’s your arrest, if you want to, you can take him to the station and charge him.’ ‘Or?’ he asked. ‘Or you can leave him here and forget you have ever seen him,’ I told him, ‘Just be sure, that you can live with your decision.’
Brian paused; he could almost hear everyone holding their breath. ‘I’ll be leaving here alone.’ he replied. ‘At one point Reg spotted that the traces of the dealer’s cars in the station yard were still showing a group of red spots on the monitor.
‘Shall I go down and remove them?’ he asked me quietly. ‘Good idea,’ I said, ‘Why do you ask?’ ‘I thought it drew attention to them all being found the same way.’ he told me. ‘That is something we need to address.’ Brian added.’
‘The last five dealers we have collected to be items,’ Brian said, ‘Reg has taken an active part in. The last two he personally injected. You all heard what he said about if he wasn’t elected tonight. I believe that to be absolutely true.’
‘However, I doubt we will ever have this situation again. So, I would suggest that even if you are unsure, it would be better to have him in with us than isolated from us. One last thing. During his personal enquiries, as he told you, he interviewed Natalie Clancy.’
‘Her husband Jack, as I’m sure you all know, was killed by West and Tarrs. Next week Natalie and Reg are getting married. A surprised murmur went round the room. ‘For those of you who don’t know,’ he added, ‘I have visited Natalie fairly regularly since Jacks death. We have become very fond of each other.’
‘I look on her as I would a daughter and the kids call me Uncle Brian. I am absolutely delighted about it, especially having seen the children’s happy faces at the news. In case you are in any doubt,’ he said with a disarming grin around the room, ‘I will be voting Yes.’ ‘And me too,’ came from Lew, Tommy, Terry, Alfie, Aiden, Lewis and Danny in unison.’
‘Thank you, Brian.’ the Super said, ‘Now we will take a vote.’ He handed round a card to everyone. ‘Just put ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ on it.’ he said. ‘And fold it over.’ Brian did his own card, waited until everyone had finished writing then went round with a bowl to collect them.
He put the bowl in front of the Super who started taking them out. He opened them one at a time and as he said ‘Yes,’ he put them down on his right-hand side. As he went through them all, the pile of cards grew, then suddenly he stopped, then looking unhappy, he said, ‘No,’ then put one on his left-hand side.
You could almost feel the room hold its breath. He went through the rest of the cards and every other one was a ‘Yes.’ As he opened his mouth to speak, Inspector Jack Chase interrupted. ‘Super, the ‘No’ is mine,’ he told them, ‘I was being over cautious, but seeing everyone else’s vote, if I may I’d like to change it.’
‘Is everyone ok with that?’ the Super asked. Seeing everyone nodding, he passed Jack a blank card and his ‘No’ vote. Jack filled in his new card, put the old one in his pocket and handed the new one back to the Super. ‘Yes,’ the Super said as he added it to the pile. ‘Thank you, Jack,’ he said, ‘That’s makes it a unanimous ‘Yes.’ Brian, will you bring him back in.’
Brian went out to get Reg, finding him sitting in the bar talking to a young lady. Seeing him coming Reg stood up. ‘Jacky, can I introduce you to my boss, Brian.’ He said to her. ‘This is my sister Jacky, he told him.’ Brian and Jacky shook hands, ‘Delighted to meet you Brian said. ‘Sorry I’ve got to drag him away from you.’
‘A unanimous ‘Yes,’ Brian told him as they headed back. He saw no need to mention the little hiccup. As they entered the room there was a round of applause. The Super stood up, shook his hand and said, ‘Welcome to the group.’ ‘Thank you,’ Reg replied, then to the room he said, ‘Thank you, everyone.’
He resumed his seat shaking a few hands on the way to his seat. ‘That concludes the main business for this evening,’ the Super said. ‘Just a couple of items left. Reg, for your information Brian and Aiden are both Jurors at the moment, so if you ever have someone in mind to be removed, contact either of them with details.’
‘They will then arrange for it to be circulated to the other Jurors. I’m sure they will fill you in on any other details. We refer to those for removal as ‘Items’ so if anyone should overhear it won’t mean anything to them. Now before I close the meeting, Reg, you have managed to discover almost everything about us.’
‘Whilst it’s remarkable, from reading your report, I think some of it was luck, but undoubtably the bulk of it was due to your instincts and ferreting skills. Hopefully no one else will be able to do what you have done.’
‘Are there any specific things you think we should be aware of?’ ‘I think you’re organised amazingly well,’ Reg said. ‘Thank you for your compliment, but if my sister hadn’t happened to work here whilst waiting to go to university, I wouldn’t have acquired your names.’
‘If the search team at Karl Bucks, and the Centre Park situation hadn’t each included someone I was on my initial training course with, I wouldn’t have known a lot more things. However, the dealer’s cars all being left at the local railway station with their keys in, all within the hour before a search on their house, was hard to miss.’
‘That it often happened with there not being enough time to reach the station, let alone their car being found, really attracted my attention. Other than that, I don’t think you could do anything better than you are doing already.’ he said.
‘Thank you, Reg,’ the Super said, ‘We’ll look at that closely. If you come up with any other ideas, you can tell Brian.’ ‘Right, meeting closed.’ he said. ‘Thank you all for coming.’ Everyone then started gathering around Reg, asking him questions and congratulating him again, both on joining the group and his engagement.
Jack Chase came up to him a little later. He introduced himself then told him, ‘I’d rather you hear this from me than someone else,’ he said. ‘The vote wasn’t unanimous at first, I voted ‘No.’ Nothing personal, I was just being extra cautious.’
‘But when I saw everyone else had voted ‘Yes,’ I decided that I might have overreacted. I asked if I could change my vote. Everyone agreed so then it was unanimous. Having made my final choice, may I welcome you to the group.’
Reg shook his hand. ‘I understand perfectly,’ he said, ‘Thank you for changing your vote, that must have taken some doing. I hope we’ll be good friends.’ It was over an hour before people started to drift off. He went over to Brian, ‘Thanks for everything,’ he said, ‘I’m sure it was mainly due to your efforts that I’m here.’
Brian grinned, ‘Personally, I didn’t doubt your sincerity when you said the group would be safe, even if they voted ‘No.’ But just in case anyone didn’t believe you, I did happen to point out,’ he said with a big grin, ‘That given how much you had found out about us, it made sense to have you in the group rather than outside of it.’
‘I’d better prove to them all that they made the right choice then.’ Reg said. He went over and chatted to Lewis and Danny. ‘Even though I hadn’t met Danny before tonight, I’d heard about some of his escapades,’ he said grinning. ‘So, I wasn’t a bit surprised to find you two involved.’
Danny took the opportunity to go and speak to the super. He thanked him for agreeing to his recent request for disposing of an item. He told him what had happened when he had met Dons uncle that resulted in him not needing to use it. Congratulations, the super told him, that was an excellent result.’
They also chatted about the possibility of extending their operation to Dannys area. Danny told him about Jake and said he thought he would be good to have on board if they did. They discussed the problem of transporting dead bodies across the country for Paul to dispose of.
