“Sweetheart, you look so distinguished, in your number one uniform and splendid new gong, I’m tempted to drag you off into those bushes over there.” Carla breathed into his ear as soon as he felt they were out of earshot and his parents had already congratulated him and stood off to take photos of their son and his beautiful wife posing for them, with the Palace in the background.
“And you are gorgeous in your Army Reserve togs, Lieutenant Taylor. It’s a shame the rest of our family couldn’t be here, particularly the children,” Bryan mused as he smiled for his parents’ photographs, “They’d have had a kick being here.”
“Oh, actually Bryan, there is one of our children here, but he or she is quite small at the moment.”
Carla smiled sweetly at her husband as she could sense the wheels turning in his head for a moment before he spoke.
“You’re pregnant?”
“Yes, I saw the Doc on Wednesday but before I could tell you the news, you announced this secret presentation had been sprung on you and I thought it had better wait, especially as this is bound to be the last of our brood.”
“Wait? Come on, get me up to speed, do you have a date yet, when are you going for a scan-”
As soon as Carla released the guard that she had clamped on her feelings, ever since he had proudly announced that he and three guests were summoned by Royal Command to attend the Palace to receive his bravery award directly from the King, and beamed at him, Bryan picked her up under her arms and lifted her high above his head and spun himself around, looking up into the delighted face of the wife he worshipped even more than he thought humanly possible.
They were interrupted by a loud “Hurrummph!” followed by “most people find these presentation ceremonies so stiff and formal...”
Bryan stopped spinning and dropped Carla lightly on her feet and both smartly turned and saluted, as they stood to attention in front of the King and the Prince of Wales, who had stopped close by. They returned their salutes, while the King continued,
“ ... but I am refreshed to see that my Colonel of the Household Cavalry and his good lady subaltern are full of the joys of spring.” He turned from his son to address the Colonel directly.
“So, Bryan. To what do we owe this outburst of joy, surely not the well-deserved silver cross and ribbon I’ve just pinned upon your tunic?”
“No, your Majesty, my wife has just announced that we are due a new addition to our family.”
“Our congratulations, to you both, Carla and Bryan,” the King replied, meaning HIS congratulations, “We have always felt that you and your dear family’s relationship was destined to be most enduring of all our acquaintances. To what, pray, does one attribute to your familial success.”
“Yes, come now Colonel,” agreed the Prince of Wales, “spill the beans, Bryan!”
Bryan looked at Carla, who smiled and nodded slightly, agreeing with her husband to continue.
“Well, your Majesty, and your Highness, I understand Prince George is well into puberty and Princess Charlotte is-
“George’s coping, but Charlotte, well, she’s being an absolute nightmare-”
