The End of the Line

True Story: The End of the line is a short vignette I wrote during an emotional moment after I suffered a pair of fatal heart attacks in January of 2020. This work is an Allegory, basically a complex and multilayered metaphor.

The train trundled through the dusk.
The person next me was talkative.
Where do you get off? was the question.
Beyond the end of the line was the answer.
Oh, so Worcester then?
No, I go on from there, that’s just where the train from the city stops.
The bus?
Well yeah, I take a bus to the last transfer station and another bus on again from there to the end of the line.
The end of the line?
It all has to end somewhere. There might be a lot of stops, twists and turns but there always is an end of the line. I live just around the corner and up the hill from the end of the line.
A bit morbid the way you say it.
Well, it actually is.
Really?
Yeah I met my end there, it was the final stop on a very long journey. A journey that took me further than I ever could have imagined but not nearly as far as I wanted to go.
Where did you want to go?
Hell I don’t know. But that’s how I knew I had reached the end of the line, I couldn’t see any more way points ahead of me.
So what did you do?
Well I laid down to die.
So you died?
Nah, I couldn’t bring myself to.
The bus trundled through the dusk.
So what ya gonna do now?
I guess find a new destination and restart the journey.
There’s still a few places I haven’t been yet and more than a few things that I haven’t done.
So when do you start?
I already did, the end of the line is behind us now. What are you going to do?
