Tabitha sat on the bed in the XO’s quarters, her mother Queen Purrless by her side. With a troubled expression on her face, she turned to her mother and uttered softly, “But mother, I thought he loved me.” As she spoke these words, a mix of confusion and longing could be seen in Tabitha’s eyes.
The queen placed her arms around her daughter and said, “Love is a complex and multifaceted emotion that takes many forms.”
“Billy said he love me, his true motivation seemed to be centered around marrying me in order to secure the throne and become the king.”
“Men are like that; most say one thing and mean something different.”
“Mother, how will I know if a man really loves me?”
“Daughter, love is a gentle whisper in your heart, a warm embrace in your soul. Trust in the depths of your being, for love will always find its way to you.”
“During our discussion about my relationship with Billy, I made it clear to Tim that my heart belongs to Billy alone. Tim and I talked about how I can’t personally invest in a relationship where my feelings are split between two individuals. Even though I’m honest and open, new information about Billy’s true goals has come to light. It turned out that Billy really wanted to be the king, which made me feel lied to.
With this new knowledge, I have to figure out how I feel about Billy, which is not easy. There’s no way that Tim and I could ever be in a relationship, even though I love value our friendship.
The queen sat there, listened, and kept nodding her head. “Dear, you and I both know that Tim can’t be the king. He also doesn’t want that job. He cares about you as a friend. You’ve been in his bed for a while now.” She looked at Tabitha and said, “You could say, he is a friend with benefits, and you wish it to stay that way.”
“Do you really think I could go back to his bed and face him and the others, without feeling bad? Ugh, the thought alone fills me with dread.”
The with an understanding voice said, “I can understand why you might feel hesitant about going back to his bed and facing him and the others. Take your time to process how you feel before making any decisions.”
The queen leaned over and hugged her daughter and said, “Remember, that we love you. I believe Tim care for you, more than you think.”
“Captain to the bridge!” came the commanding voice over the PA system, clear and direct, leaving no room for hesitation.
Tim stopped in the middle of deck 3’s common area, turned around, and headed for the lift. He stepped onto the bridge and inquired, “Who wants me?”
Mayio’s response was immediate and direct, “Sir, we have a distress call.” The urgency in her voice, conveying the seriousness of the situation at hand.
“Alright, Mayio. Provide me with the necessary information and its location immediately.” Tim said. He sat down in his command seat and watched the screen.
Tim’s eyes widened in surprise as he laid eyes on the Federation ship, which seemed out of place so far from Federation space.
A female appeared on the screen and said, “I am Captain Latal of the Federation ship River fire.”

Latal smiled and said, “A fellow, human. It’s so nice to see one.”
“Captain Latal, again, what are you doing this far away from Earth and the Federation?”
“It is a lengthy narrative, yet first and foremost, I require assistance. My vessel is in a dire state, and I am uncertain how much longer it can endure. Would you be able to aid us in any manner?”
Tim’s eyes were fixed on her every movement with a sense of urgency. He carefully observed her body language and facial expressions, trying to determine if the ship she was aboard was truly in distress.
Latal gazed at Tim with a sense of urgency in her eyes and asked, “Please, Colonel, I have injured crew members, and we have no medical personnel with us.”
Tim called Sarha. Her image appeared next to him and said, “Yes Tim.”
“Sarha, A Federation ship is in need of our assistance. Can you locate it as soon as possible?”
Sarha turned to the screen, and her scanners started beeping. It took maybe a minute, and Sarha turned back to Tim. “The Federation ship is just out of my scanner’s range,” Sarha said, glancing at him. But yes, I am turning the ship in the direction of that ship.”
Tim glanced at the screen with a warm smile and addressed, “Captain Latal, we’re en route now. It’ll take a couple of hours. Can you hang on for that long?”
“Of course, Colonel! I have full confidence that we can hold out until help arrives. Thank you so much for coming to our rescue!”
Sarah inquired, “Tim, how do you intend to address this matter?”
Tim sat there and thought. Then called Pauline in TOC. “Pauline, we are going to rescue a Federation ship. Once we get within range I want a scan of the ship, I want a body count! Also, keep a look out for any signs of another ship or two.”
Pauline replied, “Tim, if it’s a Federation ship. Why are you being so careful?”
He said, “A lone Federation ship drifts, signaling danger or opportunity?”
Shanae walked confidently onto the bridge, her eyes fixed on Tim as she approached him, she asked, “Tim, do you have a minute?”
Tim looked at her with interest and asked, “Would you rather talk about this here on the bridge or in my office?”
“It would be easier in your office, that way Sarha could show you what she has to offer.” Shanae moved toward Tim’s office.
Tim looked at Sarha and rose and headed to his office and as he settled behind his desk, with a slight furrow in his brow, with curiosity, “Okay, what have you got for me today?”
Shanae sat and said, “Tim, the captains before you would not let Sarha, use her full potential to protect the ship. I guess you have not asked, about that particular part either.”
Tim sat there and thought about what was just said. He called, “Sarha!”
Sarha’s image materialized next to Shanae’s chair, her expression calm and composed. “Yes, Tim,” she said confidently, her voice resonating with assurance.
“Shanae informs me that I have not fully tapped into your capabilities for safeguarding the ship. Can you confirm if this assessment is accurate?”
“As of now, no captain has inquired about my ability to defend myself. They have all assumed that it is their duty to ensure my safety and protection.”
Tim sat there, listening to Sarha and at the same time wondering if an AI could really protect itself.
Shanae replied, “Tim, she has the weapons and can work faster than any of us. Think about it. You must devise a plan to protect us in the event of any mishap. You need to consider the situation and make necessary adjustments. Sarha performs the same task in milliseconds.
“Tim, the other captains didn’t realize I was defending myself. I kept the shields working all the time. They thought it was their people doing that. If a missile manages to penetrate the defense, the captain initiates the counterattack. It was I who fired a missile to take it out. The captain crediting a gunner.”
Tim knew Sarha was right, she could defense herself. She has lived for over 10,000 years. He looked at her and asked, “At what range will you take over defensing the ship?”
“Tim, if the ships were within 1000 miles or 1600.93 kilometers, I could handle it.”
Tim smiled and said, “I will tell Pauline in TOC that you will assume control within 1000 miles of this ship.”
Shanae got up and said, “Thanks, Tim.” She turned and began walking out the door. Sarha’s image disappeared. Tim sat there and wondered if he had just done the right thing.
Tim returned to his seat of the bridge just in time to see and image of Captain Latal appear on the screen.
Her expression filled with disbelief and fear, she urgently turned to the Colonel and exclaimed, “Colonel, we need to act quickly; our scanners have detected the sudden appearance of four pirate ships in our vicinity.”
Tim inquired, “How far out are they?”
Latal averted her gaze from the screen momentarily before turning back to it, stating, “Approximately an hour away. We shall endeavor to delay their advance. However, the odds do not appear to be in our favor.”
Tim turned to navigation and asked, “Time to intersect?”
“One hour and ten minutes.” Responded the navigator.
