After I got back, I was sitting in the living room studying my watch manual. I finally had my watch wound, and the time set, but I didn’t have the moon phase right. I was going over the thick manual again, when there was a knock followed by Christian.

He turned on the TV, and changed the channel to a local news program. “It’s just hit the media, Alice Haeners boat has been found by lake police, her crew including Officer Schmidt are all dead, apparently executed by her. One of the men had a pink diamond in his pocket. Another man had a sniper rifle that’s being linked to the bullet that hit Adam Senior.” he said rapidly.

“That makes her involvement pretty conclusive. What do we have in legal options for seizing the assets of her and her uncle?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” Rebecca said, “In the US, there might be grounds for a wrongful death suit, but only if Uncle Adam dies.”

I looked at Christian, “We need a law firm. Check with Frederick if you don’t know who to ask. What have the police said, are they keeping you informed?”

“My contact has not been keeping me updated as I like.”

“Call him, tell him that I’m ready to make a televised press conference denouncing the lack of communication the police have been giving us innocent tourists caught up in the underworld criminals of Zurich, and that we want answers, not them finding more dead bodies.”

“That will get a reaction, are you sure you want to play hardball?”

“Be the voice of reason, the one who keeps me off camera. Let me be the bad guy, but get us answers.” I said looking at the screen, “According to the news they found this boat days ago, that’s unacceptable.”

Nora spoke up, “Keep things booked for tomorrow in case we need to get out of town, but be prepared to postpone. If the press gets worked up, they might camp out at the hotel.”

“Thank you,” Christian said, and seemed to mean it, as he turned around and left.

An hour later, he returned with a police officer, Investigator Keller. “Ms Jensen, Ms Smackley, my apologies for not reporting sooner.”

Nora said, “Thank you Investigator Keller, Rebecca, Adam, this is the gentleman that was so helpful when we experienced the hijacking.

“Investigator, Rebecca is a long time acquaintance of Adam Barkley Senior, and his lawyer. Adam Barkley Junior is Adam’s son,” she said making introductions.

“If I may, while we had suspicions that Alice Haener was involved with Sergey Haener, we now have proof that she was involved in the hijacking, the robbery, and the attempted murder of Mr Barkley. We have also identified the so called Officer Schmidt, a known accomplice of an Italian smuggling ring.”

“Where is Alice?” I asked.

“We don’t know. Everyone else is accounted for except the driver called George. I suspect his body will turn up eventually as well,” the Investigator surmised.

“Are there any additional Haeners waiting in the wings to take over and finish the job on the rest of us?” Rebecca asked.

“There is a minor branch of the family in Spain. There is no evidence of any cooperation in illegal activities with Sergey.” he replied.

“Any suspicion, instead of evidence?” I asked pointedly.

“Not that I’m aware of, Interpol is heading up that part of the investigation.”

“Please provide information on the other branch to Christian, so he can investigate and get his team prepared for any action from that direction,” I requested.

There were a few more comments, and a promise of further cooperation, and the Investigator left. I followed Christian out, and to his office, where we sat down.

“When you get the info on the Spanish branch of Haeners, I want all the details. There are people I can call to investigate. Also, Sergey didn’t sound very Swiss to me, what’s his origin story?”

“I’ll forward what I get, and I have some background on the family from our own investigation. Can I email it?”

I gave him my email address, and we shook hands. When I got back to the suite, I found Nora, “My phone’s a little small for research, is there a tablet I can borrow?”

“Use your father’s, it’s the one marked Adam on the charger in the master bedroom.”

I grabbed the tablet, and turned it on. I typed in the 3333 passcode, and then added my new Google account. Then I went thru all the emails that had gathered since the shooting. Nora had access to his cellphone, so had been replying as required, and I just reviewed what she had sent and received on my behalf.

I sat in the office chair in my room and pondered. I could let my doppelganger lay there for years if I wished. Did I want to do that? This rebirth in a new identity, it had been transformative physically. What did I want to do? I had freedom, no particular need to be or do anything. I had no compunction against killing, there was no moral quandary, or sleepless nights. I could easily see myself flying around the world, earning 150 million or more a year as a contract killer.

I had powers to explore. The mental connection with Nora was amazing. I was coming to know Nora’s life as if I had lived it myself. Frederick and fimbulwinter had been a hair brained idea, thrown off at the spur of the moment. Mystery cults had been a fascination of mine since anthropology classes in college, so long ago. Did I want to expand that? The theater of it was very fun.

Perhaps I wanted to get into the manufacturing, and exotic material fabrication field. Set up an R&D firm to replicate what I could do with my original power. Switzerland was lovely, in a way that as an American I could appreciate. A democratic, highly educated population, incredibly liberal gun laws, they had actually only recently rescinded the law that they had to have a gun, making it only optional, but encouraged!
