Drama Story: I found the toilet seat left up.
Tags: Cheating
With both our mothers insisting on helping clear away, the dishwasher was filled and the leftovers wrapped and in the fridge in only a few minutes.
I finished making another jug of coffee and took it through to the living room. Once everyone was settled, I put down my cup and told them that I had a very important announcement to make. Boy, did Madison’s eyeballs click in the socket when she heard that. I could tell by the pursed lips that she was not at all happy at having that sprung on her with no warning.
I made slow and deliberate eye contact with all four of our guests: Mom, Dad, John and Kathryn.
“There’s a situation that I’m not happy with, and rather than any of you hearing about it second-hand, I feel that we should talk it through right now. Madison doesn’t know that I’m aware, but ... one of our best friends has been having an affair, and Maddy has not only been assisting by providing an alibi, but she’s also allowed the cheaters to meet up in our guest room, at least twice to my knowledge. My question to you is, given that my wife appears to have a ... lax moral attitude to the wedding vows that both of us heard Kerry make to her husband, what does that tell me about Maddy’s ... mindset when it comes to the binding promises that she made to me?”
Madison’s face had turned pale, and her mouth was currently doing an impression of a goldfish, opening and closing but without any sound emerging. I guess the five pairs of eyes fixed on her didn’t help her composure any.
“I’d better explain. I got back from work a couple of weeks back and found the seat left up in the foyer bathroom. I asked Maddy if she’d had any visitors, and she replied that Kerry had been over. When I changed and put my work shirt in the laundry basket, there was a bedsheet already there, yet when we went to bed, the sheets hadn’t been changed on our bed. That made me a little worried, so I activated the security cameras that we normally only set when we’re out for the night or on vacation. I watched three days of Maddy working out of her home office as normal, doing the routine things around the house, and then Tuesday Kerry rolled up at lunchtime, with a man who was not Bill. The cameras picked them up going up the stairs, while Maddy returned to her work. They came back down an hour later; Maddy had made them all a sandwich lunch, they ate it together in the kitchen, and then the two cheaters left. Maddy went upstairs, came back down with a crumpled bedsheet and headed for the utility. Honey, did I miss anything?”
Her silence told me almost everything. She couldn’t meet my gaze. I turned to her parents.
“John, Kathryn, I’m truly sorry for springing this on you. I don’t know if I can get past this. It’s a side of my wife that I never saw before, and I don’t like it; I don’t like it one little bit. If Maddy can support someone cheating on her husband, what is going to stop her trying it out for herself? How can I ever trust your daughter again?”
I could see the anguish in their eyes; they’d always been great in-laws, and I knew that they were eagerly anticipating becoming grandparents just as soon as we could arrange it. Maddy and I had actually decided a few months earlier that we were almost solvent enough to afford to have kids, and we’d half-agreed that she was going to come off birth control soon. That little matter was now on hold as far as I was concerned; fortunately she was on the needle rather than the Pill, so I knew when she’d start becoming fertile.
