“Are you still in bed Miss Annabelle?” Carol called out.
Annabelle didn’t answer. Nor did she barely budge when Carol burst through her bedroom door.
“Are you going to sleep the day away? My word, it’s almost noon!” Carol exclaimed.
“Why should I get out of bed?” Anna replied, pulling the huge white sheet over her head.
“Don’t you have a wedding to plan?” Carol asked, yanking the bottom of the sheet down and away from the young girl’s head.
“Not really. All I have to do is show up. Other people are planning everything. I’m just a prop.” Anna replied, sitting up and crossing her arms over her chest with a pout.
“Aren’t you excited to get married?” Carol asked as she began to set out Anna’s clothes for the day.
“Not particularly.”
“Why not? Captain Jones is quite wealthy.” Carol replied.
“Captain Jones is also quite wide and quite old. He’s barely older than my father. Not my idea of a dashing prince.” Anna replied, rolling her eyes.
“Well, there’s a lot worse places for a young girl to end up than the lady of a huge estate.”
“Pregnant and sewing until I die. It sounds like a lovely life.”
Carol didn’t answer her again. This was an argument that the pair had had countless times in the past.
Annabelle was the 19 year old daughter of a wealthy land owner. Some would call her spoiled, but her energy and sharp wit quickly won over the hearts of all who met her. Anyone who was around her for any length of time knew that the last place that she wanted to be was sitting in a rocking chair sipping tea.
Her mother had passed away shortly after her birth and her father had done his best to raise her up to be a proper Southern lady. He didn’t, however, plan on his redheaded daughter to be such a stubborn free spirit. Anna would have much rather been on the back of a horse, galloping through the countryside than sitting at the table at one of his fancy dinners.
“Any news today?” Anna asked as she climbed into the dress that Carol had set out.
“Rumor is that we just got into the war.” Carol replied as she began to lace up the back of Anna’s dress.
“Really?” Anna asked, her voice picking up.
Carol nodded.
“We all figured it was coming after that boat got sank.” Carol replied as she set Anna’s boots on the floor in front of her.
“How exciting!” Anna exclaimed.
“War is never exciting, youngin. Lot of people gonna die.” Carol scolded.
“At least it’s something. Nothing goes on around here. Nothing! I’m just going to die of boredom!” Anna let out a dramatic sigh and threw herself backwards onto the bed.
“Come on now, get up Missus.” Carol laughed.
Suddenly, Anna shot upright.
“What day is it today?” Anna asked.
“Saturday.” Carol replied in a slow, suspicious voice.
A grin spread across Anna’s face.
“Where is James?” Anna demanded.
“Out in the stable. You’re not gonna make him take you out again, are you?” Carol asked.
Anna was already running out of the room
In her opinion, Anna had few pleasures in her boring, sheltered life. One was riding her collection of horses through their huge estate’s land. Her father father pretended to be less than enthusiastic about her riding, but Anna believed that he was secretly proud of her riding abilities.
The other pleasure was wandering into the seedy underworld of the New Orleans night life. Carol had made the mistake of introducing her to her young nephew James. Anna had cautiously befriended the young man and slowly convinced him to show her what ‘real’ life was like out in the world.
“James! James!” Anna yelled as she ran into the stable. The man jumped and dropped the brush he was using the wipe down one of the horses.
“You scared the dickens out of me Ms Annabelle!” James gasped as he spun around to face the young girl.
“It’s tonight, right? Tonight is the night, right?” Anna exclaimed.
“Whatever are you talking about, Ms. Annabelle?” Jame stammered, looking away.
James knew full well what Anna wanted, but had hoped and prayed that she had forgotten.
“The fights! The fights! The fights are tonight, right? The fights are tonight and you’re taking me!” Anna cried out.
“Hush! Hush! Not so loud!” James pleaded, looking around.
“There’s no one around! Come on, we’re going right?” Anna begged.
“You can’t tell no one! Please! No one!”
“I won’t! I won’t!” Anna exclaimed, bouncing up and down like a little girl.
“Promise me! Please! I’m sure that you’re father will have me strung up if he finds out that I took you.” James begged, his face wooden.
“He won’t! I won’t say a thing! He’ll never find out! Please! Please tell me we’re going! I’ll pay! I’ll pay! Please take me!” Anna cried out.
Slowly, James nodded.
Anna threw her arms around the young man and hugged him tightly.
“Can’t breathe.” James gasped.
Anna unwrapped her arms and grabbed the horse reigns from his hand.
“7pm. Here at the stable.” James said as Anna climbed up onto the horse.
“I’ll be here!” Anna replied as she pulled back on the reigns.
James let out a loud sigh as he watched Anna speed off out of the stables and into the fields.
“What have you been doing today?” David asked as Anna dropped into the chair across from him.
“Nothing much Father. Such a dreary day.” Anna replied, picking up her fork.
“Well, seeing that the bottom of your dress and your boots are muddy, I think you found something to amuse yourself.” David replied, suppressing a slight grin
“Oh, I took Duke out for a ride.” Anna mumbled as she shoved a load of food into her mouth.
“Mmhmm.” David smirked.
“So I heard we’re going to war!” Anna exclaimed, anxious to change the subject.
David looked up from his plate and nodded.
“I heard that as well.”
“How exciting!” Anna replied.
The grin disappeared from David’s face.
“Annabelle Elizabeth Rockwell. War is nothing to be excited about. You’ve not seen what it does to a country. To a person. You’ve not seen the bodies. The blood. The tears of the women. No, sorry dear, war is nothing to get excited about.” David said angrily.
Anna looked down at her plate, both annoyed and ashamed of herself. She loved her father and didn’t want to make him angry. It’s just that she was so bored and was dying for some sort of adventure.
“So how’s the wedding coming?” David asked in a softer tone.
“Fine. The dress will be in a few weeks.”
“Are you excited?”
“I guess.”
“The Captain is a good man. He’ll be good for you.”
“But who’s going to take care of you?” Anna asked, looking at her father.
“I’ll manage.” David smirked a little.
“I’ll come see you every day!” Anna declared.
“You’ll have other things to do than to come and see me.”
“Sewing and babies.” Anna said under her breath as she sat back in her chair.
“There are worse things in life. The Captain’s estate is bigger than ours. You could be one of the working girls in the city.”
“When will you take me to the city again? It’s been so long!” Anna exclaimed, sitting up again.
“Soon.”
“You said that months ago!” Anna pouted.
“It’s a dangerous place.”
“But you’ll be there to protect me.” Anna said in a sweet voice.
“But who’s going to protect the city from you?” David asked with a grin.
“Come on Father, come on. Please?” Anna pleaded.
David tried to hold a firm face, but his resolve crumpled quickly under Anna’s big, sad eyes.
“Next week. Next week, I’ll take you.”
“Promise?” Anna gasped, clasping her hands together in front of her face.
“I promise.” David nodded.
...”As long as you promise to stay out of trouble.” He added.
The warm, humid evening air made James’s shirt stick to his chest. It was late in the evening and the sun had already set. He silently prayed that Anna had changed her mind and lead his horse back into the stable. He slow pulled the horse into her stall.
“Where have you been? I’ve been waiting for an hour!” Annabelle’s voice rang out.
James jumped in the air and turned around to see Anna sitting on top of her favorite black stallion.
“I though you changed your mind. I waited for you.” James replied.
“Never! Come on, let’s go!” Anna demanded.
The pair rode down a long, dark road. Eventually, the lights of the city began to fill the horizon and Anna could feel her pulse quicken. The sounds of the city filled her ears and even the smell was new and exciting.
They slowed their pace as the buildings began to pop up and eventually dismounted. Anna looked around in amazement at the people in the streets, the buildings and the sounds of the big city.
James lead her through the town, past the bars and shops into a darker part of the city. Here, the people were dirtier, the smells were more intense and the sounds were more frightening. Anna’s heart raced as James tied off their horses to a post.
“Come on, we’re late.” He said in a flat, worried filled voice.
Anna followed James down a dark alley that was filled with dirty, drunken men. Anna could feel their eyes roaming over her slender body and she shivered several times.
A new sound filled her ears. This one was the cheers of a crowd and the occasional loud CRACK sound.
“Going somewhere?” A loud, gruff male voice rang out. Anna looked ahead to see a large man standing in front of James, blocking their path.
James looked over his shoulder at her and nodded.
Anna reached into her pocket and withdrew a thick stack of bills. She handed them to James, who handed them to the man. He flipped through the stack and then nodded.
“Come on. It’s started.” James said, grabbing Anna’s hand and pulling her through the doorway.
Anna and James entered a large room that was completely packed with people. As she looked around, Anna noticed that there were very few women in the crowd and the ones that she did see seemed to be focused on the men next to them rather than whatever was taking place in the center of the room.
“He’s fighting tonight.” James said loudly.
“Who?” Anna called back.
“Brutus.” James replied as he pulled Anna through the crowd.
Being a woman was both an advantage and a disadvantage. On one hand, most men didn’t say anything when she brushed past them to get a better view. On the other hand, she was much shorter than the majority of them so it wasn’t until they were deep into the crowd before she could see anything.
Finally, a spot in the crowd opened and Anna could see inside. In the center of the room was a large ring with two bare chested men in the center.
A ‘man’ was hardly the way to describe what she saw, however. The man standing up was the large person that she had ever seen and Anna was immediately convinced that he was a mythical giant come to life. Though his opponent was currently on his back, the man towered over the others in the nearby crowd.
As Anna and James watched, the man took a few steps backwards and the opponent slowly stood up. He barely reached the other man’s chest.
The men began trading blows against each other’s bodies and faces. When the larger man was hit, however, he barely reached. With one mighty punch, the taller man smashed his fist across the other’s face. Blood shot out of his mouth and landed on the shirt of an onlooker. The shorter man immediately fell to the ground again.
“They call him the Beast.” James said as the taller man knelt down and began to pummel his opponent.
Anna watched in wrapt attention as the man on the ground’s face turned into mush and he stopped moving.
The Beast finally stopped his attack and stood up, his arms raised defiantly in the air.
For the next several hours, Anna and James watched a series of men challenge the Beast in the ring. The enormous man not only dispatched them all, but did so in a taunting, brutal fashion. Blood covered his fists and body, as well as collected in puddles on the dirt covered floor.
Anna was froze in place, unable to tear herself away from the display of violence and brutality. Never in her young life had she seen anything close to the action in front of her eyes.
At one point, the Beast turned towards Anna. As their eyes locked, he gave her a grin that sent chills down her spine.
Finally the line of willing opponents for the Beast ran out and the crowd began to disperse.
“Come on, let’s go.” James urged, tugging on Anna’s arm.
Anna tore her eyes away from the man in the middle of the ring and followed James through the crowd.
---- A week later---
“Are we going tonight?” Anna demanded as she walked into the stable.
“Going where?” James stammered.
“You know darn well what I’m talking about. It’s Saturday! The fights are tonight!” Anna exclaimed.
“Uhm, I can’t go tonight. I have too much work to do tomorrow.” James babbled.
“Are you serious?” Anna blurted in an exasperated tone as she slammed her hands onto her hips.
“I’m so sorry Ms. Anna. I’d like to go but I really can’t. Your Father has me running around all...” James stammered.
“It’s fine. I don’t need you. Thanks anyway.” Anna held up her hand and then spun on her heel.
The first leg of her journey was easy. Though the road was dark, she was still on her family land for quite some time. Once she had left the extents of her Father’s property, however, her confidence began to wavier.
Shaking her head to clear her mind, Anna gripped the reigns of the horse and urged him onward towards the city.
It took all of her ability to remember the way to the building, but Anna finally dismounted and tied her horse to the same post as the week before. Holding her head up, she bravely marched down the alleyway towards the pit, not even casting a second glance at the hordes of men who ooogled her firm young body.
“I think you’re lost.” The doorman said as she approached.
“I think not. Is the Beast fighting tonight?” Anna asked as she handed him a wad of bills.
“Just got started.” The man replied, giving her a toothless, lecherous grin as she strode past him.
Anna pushed herself through the crowd towards the front of the ring. By the time she got to a point where she could see into the ring, the crowd was roaring with applause and the sounds of flesh smashing into flesh filled the air.
As with the week before, the Beast stood in the middle of the ring, mercilessly smashing one man after the other. Later in the evening one man actually managed to hit him hard enough to rock him onto his rear foot for a moment. Brutus responded by clasping his fists together and hitting the man in the face with his fleshy mace. The impact knocked the man’s head backwards and he hit the ground like a sack of flour.
The crowd roared as the Beast stood over the lifeless man. Eventually someone knelt down next to him.
The crowd grew quiet as the man looked up at the Beast, then around the room.
“He ain’t breathing.” Anna could hear the man say.
Murmurs went up through the crowd and Brutus walked back to his chair and sat down, waiting for the next opponent, who never came.
The fights were over at that point. The crowd rapidly emptied and Anna got caught up in the sudden rush. Anna never saw what happened to the man’s body but caught a glance of Brutus staring at her as she tried to follow the crowd out of the building.
The massive rush of people split off into several directions and Anna picked one of the groups to follow. It didn’t take long for her to realize that they were heading down an alley that she had not seen before. The narrow pathway twisted and turned and she struggled to follow the few people in her long dress and high boots. Before long, she was alone in the dark alley.
Panic began to set in. Anna turned around in circles frantically, searching for any sign of a direction that she should be heading. Her breathing sped up and she finally realized that the only sound that she could hear, was that of her heart racing.
Blindly, she began to run down the alley, unclear of what direction she was actually going. The full moon gave her a little light, but her eyes struggled to adjust. At this point, it didn’t matter. Anna knew she had to move and prayed that she would stumble upon something familiar.
The alleyways crisscrossed each other randomly and Anna slide through the narrow passages, hoping for a miracle. The path opened up for a moment and she turned to look to her side as she hurried along.
There, at a dead end in the alley
Was the Beast.
Anna sucked in a deep breath and increased her speed. She glanced over her shoulder to see a figure behind her. Shaking her head to clear the illusion, she twisted and turned down the dark alleyways, cursing herself and hoping for the open air.
Another turn
and another
and another
Left
Right
Left
Right
Anna looked over her shoulder again and thanked whoever was listening when she didn’t see anyone behind her.
And then she ran full force into something.
The impact brought her to a dead stop and Anna fell to the ground, her head slamming into the hard ground. Her vision grew blurry and as her eyes began to focus, she could see a figure leaning over her.
