Mama Caceres stood at the stove, turning the handle of the moka pot with one hand while her other hand absently folded the dishtowel she always kept draped over her shoulder. The comforting hiss of the coffee maker filled the kitchen, but her eyes stayed distant, unfocused.
She hadn’t heard a word from Eli since Carla came home in tears the day before. Carla said she’d give him time, but Mama didn’t believe in too much time when it came to wounds of the heart. Silence wasn’t healing. It was space for pain to rot and grow.
She poured herself a mug and stood by the window, sipping slowly, eyes scanning the side yard toward Eli’s house. The curtains were drawn. Lights off. Still.
“Eli, mijo...” she murmured under her breath. “You’re not made for silence.”
Mama stepped into her bedroom and locked the door behind her. She moved with quiet purpose, like a woman breaking her own rule.
She knelt beside the cedar trunk at the foot of her bed and pulled out a compact tablet wrapped in an old scarf. With practiced fingers, she turned it on and opened the security app Laura had installed years ago—one she hadn’t used in months.
The live feeds blinked into view: Eli’s kitchen. Eli’s office. The hallway. The den. And finally—his bedroom.
He was lying on the bed in sweatpants and a hoodie, one arm over his eyes, completely still. The blinds were closed, lights off, the room a cave of unspoken pain.
Mama’s chest tightened. She didn’t watch long. Just enough to see that he hadn’t moved.
She shut the tablet and wrapped it again. Her hands trembled slightly.
