Carla sat on the edge of her bed, arms wrapped around her knees, staring at the faint light seeping through her bedroom blinds. The stillness of the house was suffocating. No distant music from Eli’s morning workout. No scent of Mama’s early coffee wafting in from the kitchen. No text message waiting on her phone saying, “I’m making eggs. Bring over your sass.”
Just silence.
Mama Caceres knocked gently at the doorframe, peeking in with a mug in her hand. “I made coffee. You want to talk, mija?”
Carla forced a smile. “Thanks, Mama. I just ... need to check on him first.”
Mama nodded knowingly. “He might need space. But don’t let him drift too far.”
Carla rose, pulling on her hoodie. “I won’t. Not without trying.”
She stepped out of the house and into the warm mid-morning sun, walking the short path next door like it stretched for miles.
The door was unlocked. Carla stepped inside Eli’s house, familiar in every detail but eerily empty. She expected the sound of weights clinking or music playing upstairs, but there was nothing. Just the faint hum of electronics and the creak of her own footsteps on hardwood.
She found him in his office. He was seated at the desk, body rigid, face bathed in the glow of his monitor. But he wasn’t typing. Wasn’t reading. Just staring.
“Eli,” she said softly.
He blinked, slowly turning toward her. “Hey.”
That was it. No warmth. No apology. No spark.
Carla stepped closer. “You’ve been ghosting us.”
“I’ve been ... sorting things out.”
“Without us?” Her voice cracked. “I gave you everything, Eli. I gave you more than I ever thought I could give anyone. You didn’t force me. I chose this. I built this.”
He looked away. “And I broke it.”
Carla knelt in front of him, taking his hand. “You think we didn’t know this would be hard? That we didn’t talk through every possibility, every jealousy, every fear? We built this together. Me and Mama—we wanted this.”
