Hello. My name is Scott and I’m a vampire...
Yeah, I really just said that.
Now, before you roll your eyes too hard, I mean this in the most literal sense.
Yes, I drink blood.
Yes, I’ve killed people.
I’m not proud of it, but it comes with the territory.
I’m not crazy.
This isn’t a game or some sort of role play. This is a real thing and there are more of us than you’d think.
I’m 40 years old, depending on how you count it. I’m sure that you are disappointed. I know you wanted to hear that I’m a thousand year old Duke who lives in a castle in some country in Europe. I’m sorry about that. If you meet one of those guys, send them my way. The oldest vampire I’ve ever HEARD of existing is a few hundred years and that was third hand. No, most of the vampires you’ll meet are 80 or so, sometimes breaking 100.
Not quite so romantic huh?
So, I’m chronologically 40 years old, though I stopped aging at 19.
Or, aging normally at least.
One of the big misconceptions about vampires is that they are immortal.
We aren’t.
We just age, really, really slowly. I was turned when I was 19, which was about 20 years ago. But, instead of looking 40, I look about 22. Not a bad deal huh? You can see the allure. Though, there are plenty of drawbacks as well. I can walk in the sun, but vacations to Hawaii are probably out. I’ve not tested my sunlight tolerance in a long time and I don’t have much of a desire to. I can function fine in normal, daily life, which is more than most vampires can say.
In my experience, the majority of vampires don’t survive their first year or, even their first 6 months. They either don’t feed for whatever reason or they try to run out into the sun and die. I hear plenty of stories of baby vampires killing themselves after a while when they discover that they are not being able to deal with the pretty dramatic life changes. Not everyone was as lucky as I was early on, though I did have my struggles.
I figured it was about time to tell my story, since the second biggest change in my life just happened and I’m feeling rather nostalgic.
