Friday Morning Julie took Helena to the airport office, Fred remained in room 3. With Lisa, Helena walked over to the units. There they met Ian and Terri, the managers for the units. Helena outlines her expectations for the units. The units were for staff from the Vanuatu operations and basically were their overnight or two day stay. One staff member per bedroom. Ian and Terri job would be to have the rooms tidy, bed’s made, fresh fruit, bread, milk, butter and a few frozen take-a-way meals. Similar to when they had a motel business but a few more extra’s. If they needed anything then ask Lisa. Helena handed over a money tin with $10,000 float. When they got down to say $5,000 or end of month, present the bills to Lisa who will arrange the top up to $10,000. Some weeks there will be no work, over say Easter you will be very busy.
Helena mentioned “There are 4 cars in the garage they are having or had their locks changed. They will be for the crew to use. They just need to ask you for the keys.”
Ian mentioned “Three of the cars are fine, one, the BMW is so poor and need a major mechanical repair, who ever had that car thrashed it about. I would recommend getting rid of it.”
Helena advised “OK Leave that to me, you have just given me an idea for a wedding present. Can you keep the other cars serviced and fuel up. If you need to go to the shops use the cars so they get some usage.” Helena was aware their old car broke down whilst moving here from the caravan park.
“Now as you are both on the pension, not to affect your pension I and going to pay you both $2,000 a month to maintain these units and you get your accommodation for free. Use up any almost expired food as you wish. Are these arrangements suitable to you?”
They looked at each other, smiled, Terri said “Yes, we did not expect any payment, but thank you. From what you are saying if we have any problems/concerns we are to contact Lisa at the airport.”
“Yes that’s correct, Lisa has a way to contact me in need.” Helena replied. “Now have you inspected the units and do you have anything to report/ ask?”
Terri replied “Yes, one or two curtains need repair, two mattresses need replacing other wise a good spring cleaning and they will be good.”
Helena advised “Well replace the curtains and mattresses from the kitty and account at the end of the month, that’s why I gave you a good petty cash amount. Sometimes like over Easter you will be very busy other times nothing. If anyone asks for accommodation the answer is no, it is taken. Understood.”
Yes we understand, Thank you for this chance to get back on out feet again.” Terri answered.
Helena and Lisa left them to carry on with their chores. Going for a walk down Golden Four Drive towards the coffee shop. Helena asked Lisa “Thoughts on them?”
“I feel they will do very well for you, I’ll bring over Trudy and Danielle so they know who they are to get information from. You gave them both authority and responsibility, because of that they will do well for all of us.” they ordered coffee and sat outside.
“Good” Helena replied “Now between you and Fred the units are under a different company structure and the Airport business will be hiring the rooms, like hotel payments, to cover their costs and ongoing. It is to be a separate profit centre but not a massive profit. I leave that to you and Fred to organise.”
Lisa laughed “Yes I understand we, the airline have the cost, but it is ultimately going back into the business. I like it. I take it Ben, Suzanne and I will be the signatures on the account?”
“Correct, and include Fred for both accounts. I’ll talk with Ben and Fred whether to leave as a separate company or name it a sub company of the airport business. I currently own the shares in my name, I think, I need to check with Ben. He likes to make the best tax angle for me at all times and I do trust his decisions.” Helena advised.
They finished their coffee’s. Lisa returning to the airport and Helena started to walk towards the beach.
