This story is set within a Puritan community living in New England in 1662. (Think of the witch trials at Salem in Massachusetts).

The Puritans were extremely religious Protestant Christians, so they often prayed and frequently referred to God and Sin. They did not call themselves Puritans; that was a label that was applied to them by others in the same way that we use “extremists” (and with the same meaning). Among themselves, many preferred the term Reformists.

Among other things, the Puritans believed (as I understand it) that individuals had to find their own way to God through study of the Bible and through observation of God’s Creation, namely the world around them. Therefore, they rejected the Catholics who relied on priests to tell them what to believe. They referred to Catholics with contempt and called them Papists (followers of the Pope). The Puritans also rejected (and were rejected by) the more liberal Protestants who dominated the Church of England and society in general in Britain.

That is why so many of them migrated to the colonies in America. There they could be free to practice their religion in their own way, free from persecution.

John Calvin was a significant figure in the development of the branch of Protestant Theology that the Puritans followed. For this reason, Puritans are sometimes referred to as Calvinists. The Puritans are known to have used a translation of the Bible written in Geneva by a group of Protestants led by John Calvin. Quotations from the Bible used in this story are taken from the 1599 Geneva Bible.

While I have tried to be as historically accurate as I can be, I have taken a few liberties in the interests of telling the story. In addition, the characters’ own understandings of the Bible are sometimes flawed.

This is quite a dark story in places and some may find aspects distressing. All I can say is that if you find it so, please keep in mind the title.

Note: This is an improved version of a story that previously appeared on a different site under an alternate pseudonym.
