Darren kept his arms up, holding the shield in place as more magical projectiles smashed into it. What he was doing was working, and he could hold the shield up all day if he needed to. But this was a holding effort at best, as they had come to this shop looking for knowledge. Knowledge that these witches had access to, but they did not.

“Got any ideas, babe?” Daelina asked, hovering nearby as she readied some attack spells.

“One or two! Can you and Amy hold the shield?” Darren asked his fiancée.

“Yeah, but not for long!” his sister replied.

“How long is ‘not long’?” he queried.

“Thirty seconds, tops! Remember, your magic and mine differ!” she told him.

“More than I need!” Darren grinned. Nodding, Amy and Daelina stepped up and quickly assumed control of the shield. Eva popped out of hiding and stood by, her Druidic magic ready to fire back at these witches.

Darren worked quickly, searching out the patches of greenery he needed, and spotted a few tufts of grass poking through the concrete. Grinning, he dipped into his Gaian powers and poured it into the plants that were on the other side of the shield. He commanded them to grow rapidly, and they obeyed his command, quickly becoming tall and thick.

There were several gasps from some of the witches that were taking cover, and they turned their attention to the rapidly growing greenery. Darren smiled at this, knowing he had their attention as he commanded the plantlife again, this time to entrap attacking women. Many of the women yelped and danced about, trying to avoid the ensnaring greenery, taking their attention off attacking the Gaians.

“All yours, ladies!” Darren told his family, and the ladies grinned, launching their own counterattack.

Darren continued his interference with the greenery, forcing the witches to go on the defensive and try to block the incoming attacks. It didn’t take long before the witches were in full retreat, not wanting to tangle with the Gaians any further. More bolts of energy and even elemental magic bloomed, causing the witches to panic.

One witch was hit with a glancing blow and fell to the ground, unconscious. The others took one look at their fallen comrade and left her behind. None of them wished to risk their lives for someone who’d been that unlucky. Moments later, the alley was quiet again, with only the four Gaians and the unconscious witch occupying it now.

“Odd. You’d think they’d come back for their fallen friend. Or at least try to defend her,” Amy commented.

“Practitioners of Black Magic don’t hold to the same principles that we do, Amy. If there is someone in your group that falls, you don’t help them up. You let them languish in their own failures, as that is one less potential rival you will have to deal with when ascending the ranks,” Daelina told her future sister-in-law.

“So, what do we do with her?” Amy wondered.

“I’m thinking prisoner! Maybe a bargaining chip of sorts for these witches?” Daelina suggested.

“Excellent idea there, Lina! Would you mind shrinking her down? Still a bit iffy on getting the spell right,” Eva told the fairy woman.

Daelina just giggled as she remembered the last time Eva had tried a shrinking spell. She got the idea and principle of it right, but was a bit off on the proportions of ... certain body parts. The fairy waved her hands and quickly enacted the shrinking spell, while also enacting a basic binding spell, putting the witch in a set of magical shackles.

“Do you really need to do that, with her being so small?” Darren asked as Eva picked up the now miniature woman and tucked her away in her purse.

“Remind me to tell you about the time we shrank a dragonling without first binding the little bugger!” Daelina told her future husband.

“I’ll remember that! Back to the car, then?” the Guardian asked.

“Yup! Those witches seem to be quite bold behind closed doors, but aren’t so ready to fight us in the open. Let’s regroup and figure out another way to attack this,” Eva stated, and everyone agreed. Maybe they’d go and grab some Timmies before trying again.

They sorted their clothes out and made it seem like they were walking out of another shop as they made their way out of the alley. As they moved along, the group spotted another gaggle of women who were meandering over by their car. Amy embraced her magic, thinking it was the group of witches who had chased them out of the bookshop, but Eva waved her off.

“Don’t pull it out just yet, dear. We don’t know if this group is part of those twats in the shop,” Eva warned.

“I have an idea. Let me fly over in fairy form and see for myself!” Daelina offered.

“Are you sure that’s a good idea, Lina? I mean, I don’t want you or the baby getting hurt,” Darren stated, his face full of concern.

“Oh, Darren, I’ll be all right! I won’t be going over in full visibility! Remember, us Gaians can only be seen if we want to be seen!” Daelina told her fiancé as she slowly faded from view.

“All right! Just be careful!” Darren warned.

“Always, love!” Daelina told him as she flitted over and kissed his nose, which made Darren smile.

“It’s always nice to see that as ... tumultuous as your upbringing was, you still are a good man at heart,” Eva beamed proudly.

“Thanks, mom,” Darren replied with a smile.

Daelina smiled and agreed, having overheard everything before bolting off to the car. The Marstons stood on the other side of the street, making it seem like they were deciding on a restaurant to go and eat at. The witches noticed them, but paid them no mind, their focus on something else. Daelina caught a snippet of that as she neared the group.

“ ... certain they are in the area?” the obvious leader of the group questioned.

“They are. I don’t know how or why they turned, but the fact is that they have. Even Vishna is around, doing the cult’s bidding,” another woman stated.

“Fuck! I swear by Shiva that I am going to get her out of there and knock some sense into that girl!” the leader growled, more than angry at what she was hearing.

“That’s going to be difficult, considering this cult believes in something parallel to our own beliefs. You know how things are twisted when it comes to certain aspects of Kali,” the other woman said, as though reminding the leader of what they were up against.

“Did you need some help in dealing with this cult?” Daelina asked out loud, spooking the group of witches as they looked around in panic.

“Who are you?! Where are you?!?” the leader demanded, her magic flaring into being.

“Just chill and put up your magic. I am an ally, and I wouldn’t appreciate being incinerated on the spot. So please put it away,” Daelina asked politely. Seeing that she had little choice, the witch closed her hands and willed her magic to be dormant. Once that was done, Daelina sighed in relief and dropped the Gaian veil from her form. The witches jumped again, but this time, they were all smiles upon seeing Daelina.

“Here I thought that the Fairy species had gone extinct! It is good to see that servants of Gaia still live and roam this world!” the leader said happily as she extended her hand. Daelina smiled and flew over, perching on the woman’s palm as a sign of friendship and a desire to speak.

“We’re not gone. Not yet, and if my future husband has any say about it, we won’t be going extinct anytime soon!” Daelina said with a smirk.

“Your future husband?” the leader asked.

“Yes! I found myself not only a man who will help me with repopulating the Fairy race, but the man who is fated for me, as I am for him,” Daelina explained.

“Is he ... a Gaian as well?” the leader asked hopefully.

“Him and his family are! Well, his mother and sister, at any rate. Would you like to meet them?” the Fairy woman asked. The leader nodded as hope made her face light up as if a miracle was occurring right in front of her. Daelina grinned, then made a gesture to the group of them, who then walked over to the stunned group of witches.

“They are ... all Gaians?” the leader asked.

“That we are. I am Eva Marston, a druidess in training. My daughter, Amelia and my son, Darren,” Eva said, introducing them all.

“My name is Daelina. Soon to be Daelina Marston!” the Fairy said as she jumped out of the lead witch’s hand and grew back to human size. She then pasted herself to Darren’s side and smiled, sighing all the while.

“My name is Pavarti. We are the Guardians of Shiva, a coven of witches that is dedicated to preserving the balance, so that all which is good may flourish,” the woman told the group.

“I’m curious why you and yours are here, hunting down a cult of ... did you say Kali?” Daelina asked.

“Oh damn! Is this some Indiana Jones level shit??” Darren asked. Pavarti got this really annoyed look on her face, but then calmed down.

“While that Hollywood representation of Kali is off by a mile, some people only look at her in such a light. Mostly those who only want to draw from the darker aspects of the goddess. Sure, Kali is the goddess of war, anger, and destruction, but there are other, more peaceful aspects to Kali,” Pavarti explained.

“Like what?” Amy asked.

“Kali is also the goddess of time, change, and creation. She also happens to be one of the Mahavidyas,” Pavarti went on.

“Mahavidya? What in Gaia is a Mahavidya?” Darren wondered out loud.

“It is ... a little more complex than what you might be able to traditionally understand. It would take me a few hours to fully explain everything,” Pavarti told them.

“Time, which we don’t have much of,” Daelina told her family as a reminder.

“Yeah! Something I’m sure you and yours don’t want to waste either,” Eva said in agreement.

“So, this cult of Kali, you’ve been hunting them down?” Darren asked.

“Yes. Our coven was busy fending off incursions from Black covens, trying to poach some of our newest initiates, while stirring anger and doubt among the current members. These covens have been getting bolder and bolder as the weeks wore on. The way things were going, we didn’t see any real end in sight. Maybe that was the point, as we didn’t see the cult growing in our midst until it was too late,” Pavarti huffed.

“It’s the way Dark forces operate. They keep you busy with smaller fights of lesser consequence, while the real play, comes from the shadows, when you least expect it,” Daelina told them.

“Have some experience in dealing with such forces?” Pavarti asked with a knowing look.

“Far more than we would like. But you said you were looking for a cult of them? Are they witches like yourselves?” Amy asked.

“Yes, they are! Have you seen them?” Pavarti asked hopefully.

“Seen them? We damn well fought them! You want to know where they are holed up?” Darren offered.

“Please! We’ve been searching for them for some time, but have had no luck in locating where they are operating out of! We only came to this neighborhood because one of ours who went over was supposedly spotted nearby!” Pavarti replied eagerly.

“They’re in a bookstore not even a few blocks from here. Come on, we’ll show you!” Eva said as she led the way to the storefront.

“Might want to send a few of your coven to the alleyway just over there,” Amy said, pointing at the alley they had come out of. “They chased us out that way, and it would make a fantastic escape route if left unguarded.”

“Good idea! Ravni, Moni, Gita, get over there and stay alert! Don’t want any of them slipping away!” Pavarti ordered. The women who were named nodded, and they peeled off, taking a guard post in the alley. The rest of the group headed around the block to the front of the store, staying frosty in case there was an ambush waiting.

“I am curious about something,” Pavarti stated as they crossed a street on their way.

“Oh? What are you curious about?” Daelina asked.

“What are a bunch of Gaians doing here, in this part of the city? I mean, if you feel it prudent to speak of your business with me,” Pavarti replied respectfully.

“We are in search of ancient knowledge. Knowledge, which could be a tipping point in the fight we have ahead of us,” Eva told the woman.

“A fight? Against whom?” Pavarti wondered, and the curious looks she got from the rest of the coven spoke of a similar curiosity.

“Carman, and her cult.”

“Wait ... she’s returned???” Pavarti gasped, her face turning ashen.

“So, even covens of the Far East know of the Dark Witch?” Amy asked.

“Know of her? Tales are told of the horrific and evil things she did while she lived! Legends of that woman went beyond the borders of Europe!” Pavarti stated.

“So, you are familiar with her cult, then?” Eva questioned.

“Familiar with them, no. Have had a few run-ins with them, yes, and none of them pleasant! A powerful bunch that should not be toyed or messed with,” the witch breathed.

“But anyway, if we’re going to fight her, we need the knowledge that may be contained in that shop those ... devotees of Kali are holed up in,” Amy told her.

“Help us in dealing with this cult, and you can have whatever you find there! We won’t contest ownership of it, as if it helps defeat the Dark Witch, then it is a small price to pay,” Pavarti replied.

“What did you have in mind for confronting this cult? Full frontal attack?” Daelina asked.

“Not if it can be helped. Many of the people in there are friends of mine! Some are even family! I don’t want to hurt them if I can spare them such pain!” Pavarti replied, her voice full of fear and concern.

“Would you like to see if they can be brought back?” Darren offered.

“What do you mean?”

“Mom?” Darren queried, turning to Eva. In response, Eva reached into her purse and pulled out the still unconscious witch they had captured, wrapped in a handkerchief. Daelina started working her magic immediately, bringing the woman back to full size. Once she was finished, Pavarti gasped in both joy and fear as she stared at the woman.

“Friend of yours?” Amy wondered.

“That’s my little sister, Vishna! She was always a sweet and kind girl, with not a single malicious bone in her body! I didn’t want to believe that she was seduced by the cult’s lies!” Pavarti sobbed.

“Any ideas as to why she turned? Was there a big fight between the two of you? Your parents and her? Boyfriend issues?” Eva questioned, spitballing to try to find a reason why Vishna would have switched sides.

“We’ve always gotten on well! I mean, we’ve had our fights and disagreements, sure, but never anything big enough to drive here to these cultists!” Pavarti replied.

“It could be something that has been simmering for a while, but that she could have kept hidden. More and more people do that these days, so no one knows their true intent,” Amy suggested.

The three of them batted a few ideas back and forth while the rest of them kept watch. Darren then sensed something, but he couldn’t understand what it was. The more he thought about it, the more he could sense something was off about Vishna. He then moved his gaze towards his fiancée, and Darren could see that she also felt something.

“Do you feel that?” Daelina asked her future husband.

“Yeah! It’s almost like...” Darren started.

“The Dark Heart.”

“Dark Heart? What are you talking about?” one of the witches asked as she too was observing the form of Vishna.

“An artifact of immense evil. It exudes a form of blackened blood, which can control and corrupt even the most strong willed of beings,” Daelina told the woman.

“Aashna? What’s going on?” Pavarti wondered, having only heard the last few snippets of conversation.

“We think Vishna might be infected with some sort of Black Blood, which is corrupting her will and her actions,” Darren told her.

“Like the Dark Heart did with Felicitae?” Amy questioned.

“We believe so. How long had Vishna been missing for?” Daelina asked.

“Maybe a couple of weeks?” Pavarti replied.

“Then there’s a good chance that we should be able to remove the Black Blood without any lasting damage to Vishna. Try to keep folks from looking at us if you can? We don’t exactly want to be drawing too much attention to ourselves,” Eva asked.

“We’ve been keeping a basic glamor up since we met. As far as any Normies are concerned, we’re just a bunch of people having a lively conversation,” Pavarti stated.

Smiling, the Gaians then turned to the prone form of Vishna, drawing upon their magic. Darren enacted his protective spells in case Vishna got violent, while Daelina, Amy, and Eva focused their energies on healing. Their magic was strong, yet it felt as though something was missing.

“Pavarti, we need your help,” Daelina told the witch.

“M-me? Why me? Why not Darren?” the East Indian woman queried.

“Because if we are to help Vishna, having someone who cares about her helping will help break the Black Blood’s hold on her. I would help, but I am a Guardian, with magic that is more suited for defense and containment,” Darren said in explanation.

“My experience with healing is ... limited. I haven’t really practiced with it!” Pavarti admitted.

“We can guide you through what needs to be done. Just follow our lead and do what you can to mimic what it is that we do,” Eva told her gently.

Pavarti nodded and embraced her magical power through her focus, adding to what Eva and Amy had brought forth. Eva led the spellcraft, forming several runes and directing the flow of magic to be one of cleansing. Amy was right behind her, and though the runes looked foreign to Pavarti, she followed the flow of magic easily enough. Moments later, Vishna’s eyes snapped open, and she hissed like an angry cat at the healing magic that surrounded her.

“Darren!!” Amy called out, spurring her brother to action.

“Already ahead of you, sis!” Darren responded, his protective magic flaring up. Quicker than thought, he enacted a trap and cage spell, locking Vishna in place so she couldn’t disrupt the healing spell. She screamed and fought back, trying to break out, but was stymied by the Gaian power that held her.

“You three might want to hurry up! Whatever the fuck has her in its grip is strong! Not sure if I can hold her for much longer!” Darren growled as he brought more containment magic to bear.

“Aashna! Help him!” Pavarti told her friend as she focused more of her magic onto her sister. The East Indian beauty drew through her own focus, adding magical power to Darren’s considerable pool, reinforcing his spells. The man then breathed a bit easier, glad that he wouldn’t have to work as hard in containing this witch.

“Just another few seconds...” Eva called out, the spells now fully formed and ready to be cast.

She then turned the power from herself, directing into the young girl that stood in front of her. The girl tried screaming, but the glamor the witches held also muted any noise that came from them, making it futile. As the magic saturated her being, Vishna tried fighting it, like it was a physical entity, but it was useless. The Gaian power, backed by Pavarti’s white magic, seeped into her, the cleansing energy going to work.

Vishna jolted, spasmed and flailed about, as though a fight was happening inside her own body. Such a thing was occurring, as the Black Magic that held Vishna was trying to maintain its control over her and failing. In less than a minute, Vishna started clutching her stomach and keeled over, like she was going to vomit. Moments later, she did just that, but what came out instead was the Black Blood that was controlling her.

Everyone there was grossed out, and a few were even horrified that such a morass was inside her. The magic that was now inside Vishna expelled every drop of the substance, purging her body until all that remained were things that should be there. Vishna then shook her head, blinking several times, as though she was trying to clear a nightmare from her head.

The girl then looked down and saw the Black Blood lying on the ground, like a sentient puddle, oozing its way toward her. Vishna quickly scrambled away from it, but then hit the wall that was the magical cage that Darren had conjured. Thinking quickly, Darren weakened the spell enough to let Vishna pass out of it. Once she was clear, he then focused on entrapping the Black Blood, keeping it from getting near or infecting anyone else.

The substance then squealed and screamed like it was a sentient thing, trying to find a way out of the cage. But such attempts were useless, as the cage was complete and there was no way it was escaping. The Black Blood started to smoke and wither away as it touched the cage made of Gaian magic. In no time at all, it was gone, nothing but acrid-smelling smoke that faded away into the wind.

Everyone finally released the magic they were holding, taking a deep breath, as though they had been running for a while. Vishna was on her knees, rocking back and forth, her breath coming in quick, frantic gasps. She then broke down crying, putting her face into her hands and wailing in anguish. Pavarti was on her knees in front of her sister, pulling her into a hug and holding her close.

“I’m ... I’m ... sorry...” Vishna blubbered, almost wailing into Pavarti.

“It’s OK, sis. I got you,” Pavarti said comfortingly.

“I couldn’t ... I tried ... I could have...” Vishna sobbed, blaming herself for what had happened.

“It’s not your fault. You had no control over yourself,” Pavarti shushed as she held onto her sister. The pair of them sat like this for several minutes longer, with Pavarti letting Vishna cry her eyes out. She eventually stopped crying, calming down from the trauma she had endured. Her gaze eventually swept upwards, seeing familiar faces, and she looked ready to burst into tears again.

“Hey, it’s OK, Vishna. You had no choice but to obey what you were told,” Daelina said comfortingly.

“Are ... are you...” Vishna stuttered, taking in the sight of the woman in front of her.

“A Fairy? Yeah. I get that a lot!” Daelina giggled as she flexed her wings slightly.

“How ... how were you ... able to...” Vishna started, unable to finish.

“We have some experience with such ... substances. Mostly on how to purge them from those who are still good at heart,” Daelina said soothingly.

“So ... it’s ... gone?”

“Yeah. Damned thing can’t stand against Gaia’s magic,” Darren said with a grin. Vishna then looked around properly and saw that there were more strangers with the group than she thought. It took her a moment, but she finally focused and voiced what was on her mind.

“Gaia? She’s back?” the girl asked hopefully.

“She’s always been here, but hampered because people didn’t want her influence to spread. With groups like the Sons of Caesar now long gone from this town, she can finally bring others to her embrace,” Eva said with a smile.

“Thank you for freeing me!” Vishna said as she gave all of them a hug as fresh tears spilled down her cheeks.

“It was the least we could do, seeing as how you weren’t in control of yourself,” Amy told the girl as she hugged her back.

“Vish, do you think the others are being controlled like this? Like you were?” Pavarti asked, hoping this was the case.

“I ... think so! I remember a lot ... but not everything. It’s all ... kind of hazy,” Vishna responded. While she would have liked to take some more downtime to process what had happened to her, she knew Pavarti needed answers. If the others were being controlled as she was, then they needed to be freed too.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if this was the case. When it comes to the followers of the dark, those who won’t convert willingly are often forced. Usually, through substances like the Black Blood we purged from Vishna’s body,” Eva stated.

“Where does this ... Black Blood ... come from?” Aashna queried.

“From a Dark Heart, as we said earlier. Has anyone who is a part of this cult given any sign that they were dissatisfied with what they were a part of? Or anything that would have indicated such behavior was ramping up?” Eva wondered.

“No. There was no sign of this. It all came at us by surprise,” Pavarti stated.

“Well, then that narrows down the possibilities of what it could be. It’s likely that whoever it is that is in charge of his cult probably has a Dark Heart in their possession. It would explain how quickly all of these girls pulled a one-eighty and turned on you,” Amy reasoned.

“How can you be so sure of this?” Aashna questioned.

“Did you not see the Black Blood that Vishna vomited out just now?” Daelina asked, crossing her arms and giving Aashna a look.

“Fair point. Do you think you could purge the Black Blood from the entire group inside?”

“With your help, it might be possible. Is everyone here a witch?” Darren wondered, curious if they had enough magic users to pull off such a feat.

“But there may be those who turned of their own free will. You have to be prepared to fight those who may have done so,” Eva warned, reminding them they may have a fight on their hands.

“If there’s a chance that even half of them could be saved, it’s something I’m willing to try,” Pavarti stated, drawing nods from her coven.

“Hang on. I have an idea that might work in purging the Black Blood from those who are being controlled, and it could knock out everyone who is also a willing convert,” Darren stated, catching everyone’s attention.

“What is this idea?” Aashna asked, wondering what the Guardian had in mind.

Darren shared the basic idea of his plan with everyone there as they made their way to the shop. It surprised many of them there with its ingenuity, and they all agreed that it was worth the risk of trying. Everyone had their own bits to add on how to make the plan work. Even Vishna had a few ideas on how to counter any attacks that could be thrown their way. They planned quickly, knowing they didn’t have long, and they hoped to Gaia that it would work.

Luke, Karla, Emalia and Xaera all ambled out of the shop they started with, having little luck in finding what they needed. The store in question had a few items of power, but they were minor in nature. The only items of interest was a glamor crystal, which was useful for crafting disguises on the fly, and a spellbook of minor power.

Neither item was for sale originally until Emalia employed her Fairy charms to ‘convince’ the owner to sell them. It hadn’t taken Emalia much to do so, as the man was a normie, with a will that was easily bent. They all piled into Karla’s car before moving on to the next shop on the list.

“I really thought this place was one that would have had more than this,” Xaera griped, not happy at all with what they’d found so far.

“Well, it was the one that Valerie had identified with a question mark, making its legitimacy dubious. At least we got it out of the way with no surprises,” Luke told his Fairy lover.

“That’s true,” Emalia admitted.

“Besides, I think that these other places will yield better results in what it is we need,” Karla stated, as she pulled out into traffic, navigating her way to the next shop.

“Yup! It’s not like we walked away completely empty-handed! We did keep these things from being used for nefarious purposes,” Luke stated, knowing that such power in the wrong hands could be bad for all parties involved.

Everyone in the car agreed with that assessment as they made their way to another shop on the list. They were feeling pretty good about what the next shop held for them, and they kept up that optimism. Unknown to them, they were all being watched by someone who had the sense to keep their distance.

The people in question were a bunch of kids who couldn’t have been any older than eighteen at most. It was a mixed group, and they were all dressed like runaways, because that is what they were. Runaways, putting their terrible pasts behind them. While they were runaways, they were well cared for, well fed, and always looked after, no matter what scrapes they got into.

This was due in large part to the mistress they served, who took them in and cared for them all. The only thing she asked in return was to be her eyes and ears in the city, as she wasn’t one for mingling amidst humanity. Their mistress had her reasons, and they trusted her, as she had done much for their welfare since finding them.

‘They have taken the items of interest?’ came the woman’s melodious voice in one boy’s ear.

“They have, mistress. Right now, they are headed to another place, supposedly to look for more such items,” the lead girl responded.

‘Is that all they are doing at this moment?’ the voice questioned.

“It seems that way, but I get the impression that are looking for something, but I don’t know what,” the girl replied.

‘Doesn’t the tuning crystal allow you to hear them when they speak?’ the voice huffed in annoyance.
