They stayed wrapped together until the shaking eased. Chase pulled the blanket up over both of them without letting go. Sam’s breathing slowed against his chest. His hand stayed in her hair. Neither of them spoke again. The lamp was still on, but neither of them moved to turn it off. Sleep took them like that, tangled, warm, and finally quiet.
Sam woke to sunlight through the blinds and the steady rise and fall of Chase’s chest under her cheek. For a few seconds she didn’t move. She checked, the way she always did. The pressure was still gone. No count in the back of her head. No low pull under her skin. Just quiet.
She lifted her head. Chase was already awake, watching her with the careful, open look he’d had since the library.
“It’s still gone,” she said.
He nodded. A small smile pulled at the corner of his mouth.
She sat up slowly, the blanket sliding to her waist. Her voice came out quieter.
“Thank you ... For saving my life.”
He didn’t answer with words. He leaned in and kissed her, small, soft, brief. Just enough to say he heard her. When he pulled back his hand stayed over hers.
They got dressed in the easy quiet of the room. She wore his clothes again. He made coffee. They drank it sitting on the edge of the bed, shoulders touching, talking about nothing important, whether the dining hall would be open, if her ankle still hurt, the fact that his roommate wouldn’t be back until next semester. It felt ordinary. It felt like something she hadn’t had in years.
They spent the rest of the morning walking around campus. No destination. Sam kept her hands in the pockets and pointed out places she used to go before everything fell apart. A bench under a big tree where she used to study. The side door of the arts building she and her friends used to sneak through. Chase listened, asked small questions, and didn’t push when she went quiet. They got sandwiches from a food truck and ate them on the low wall outside the library. She laughed once at something he said, short, surprised, real, and he looked pleased in a way he tried to hide. She bumped his knee with hers and left it there.
In the afternoon they ended up at the campus bookstore. Sam wandered the aisles while Chase looked at used textbooks he didn’t need. She found a cheap paperback with a bent cover and held it up. He bought it for her without comment. Outside she flipped through the first few pages while they walked, reading a line out loud that made her snort. He smiled and didn’t tease her for it.
