The dorm room smelled of cheap coffee, old paper, and citrus floor cleaner. It was meticulous to a fault: twin beds neat and made, towering stacks of heavy hardcovers organized strictly by subject along the wall, and a desk cluttered with neatly capped highlighters, index cards, and a pair of spare reading glasses.

Chase pulled out his rolling desk chair for her, but Sam opted for the edge of his bed instead, her bad leg stretched out, her back pressed against the wall where she could keep her eyes on the door.

Chase set a plastic first-aid box on his desk, pulling out an antiseptic wipe and a fresh square of gauze.

“Hold still,” he murmured, stepping close.

When he reached out, Sam instinctively flinched, her head pulling back, her shoulders locking up. “I can do it myself.”

“You can’t see the side of your own temple.” Chase said gently, holding the wipe up so she could see it. He didn’t push forward; he just waited until her chest stopped heaving. “It’s just saline and cotton. I promise.”

She swallowed hard, her eyes darting from his askew glasses to the open door before she finally gave a tight, reluctant nod.

He worked with clinical precision, his fingers surprisingly light as he dabbed the blood away from her scrape and smoothed a bandage over the skin. The touch was completely devoid of pressure or expectation, and the utter normalness of it sent a subtle, disarming shudder through her.

Once he was finished, he stepped back, giving her space. He plugged in a small electric kettle on his bookshelf and pulled two foam cups of instant cup-ramen from a crate. Three minutes later, he handed her one along with a plastic fork, keeping the other for himself as he pulled up his desk chair, sitting opposite her.

Chase sat in the desk chair, plastic fork poised over his cup of noodles, watching her more carefully than he meant to. Sam kept her eyes on the steam rising from her own cup, shoulders still tight against the wall.

“So...” he began, voice careful. “You from around here?”

Sam gave a short, noncommittal sound and kept eating.

“You always sit like that?” he asked quietly. “Back to the wall. Eyes on the door.”

Sam didn’t look up. “Habit.”

He nodded and took a small bite of his noodles. The silence stretched. Chase stirred the broth slowly, then glanced at her again.

“You can ... make yourself comfortable,” he said, a little awkward.

“I’m fine,” Sam said, short and flat. She didn’t look up from the cup.

After a moment he tried again, voice still careful. “So ... the library. The way it happened. None of it fits anything and the way you looked afterward. I just ... don’t understand it.”

Sam’s jaw flexed. She took another slow bite, chewed, swallowed. “You ask a lot of questions...”

“I know. I’m sorry. It’s just, none of this makes sense. I’ve been turning it over for a week and I still can’t make the pieces fit.”

She set the fork down a little harder than necessary. “Stop treating me like a problem to solve.”

Chase blinked, caught. “I’m not trying to—”

“Yes, you are.” Sam’s voice sharpened. “You’re sitting there cataloguing every word I say. Measuring me. Trying to file me under some neat little theory so you can sleep again.”

“That’s not fair.” he pushed back.

“Isn’t it?” She pushed the cup of ramen onto the nightstand and stood up too fast. The room tilted for a second; she caught herself on the edge of the bed. “I’m not a puzzle for you to solve, Chase. I’m not some interesting anomaly you get to dissect over a cup of Ramen.”

She limped toward the door.

Chase’s chair scraped back. His voice came out thinner than he wanted, shaking at the edges.

“You took my virginity.”

Sam stopped with her hand on the doorknob.

“I had never been with anyone before,” he said, the words tumbling out faster now. “And you just ... took it. In a library. On an old goddamn leather chair. I still feel it every time I close my eyes. But you were crying. Right after. You looked terrified. Like you hated what just happened. I need to understand what the hell happened to me. To both of us.”

Silence stretched between them.

Sam’s shoulders rose and fell once. She didn’t turn around yet.

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” she muttered.

Chase’s answer was immediate. Quiet. Steady.

“Try me.”

She finally looked back at him. Her expression was flat, almost tired of the whole performance.

“You really want to know?”

He nodded once.

Sam exhaled through her nose, then said it plainly, almost conversationally:

“I have to have sex every three days ... or it takes over.”

Chase’s mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.

“ ... What?”

The word came out small, stunned.

Sam’s face hardened. She took one step closer, voice dropping into something raw and deliberately cruel so there could be no mistake.

“If I don’t fuck someone within 72 hours, it takes over my body and finishes the job for me.”

She laughed once, sharp and broken, then kept going, the words spilling out faster, edged with anger and something close to despair.

“Not because I’m lonely. Not because I’m some desperate, horny girl who can’t keep her hands to herself. If the seventy-two hours run out, it takes over. Completely. That’s it. And every time the deadline gets close, I hope, I fucking hope, it just lets me go. That it finally gives up and leaves me alone. But it won’t. The closer I get to the deadline, the more it takes over. It doesn’t care what I want. It doesn’t care who gets hurt. It will do any and everything to collect what it’s owed. And when it’s finished, I’m the one left standing in the wreckage, hating myself for whatever it made me do.”

Chase sat frozen, the plastic fork still loosely in his fingers. For a long moment he just stared at her, the words hanging between them like something too heavy to pick up.

Then, quietly:

“‘It’ ... what is ‘it’?”

Sam’s throat worked. The hard edge in her expression softened, then cracked. Her eyes went glassy, shining under the dorm’s cheap overhead light, but she didn’t let the tears fall. When she spoke again her voice was thicker, quieter, like every word cost her something.

“‘It’ is the debt,” she said. “The fucking curse that was put on me.”

She swallowed hard and kept going, the words coming slower now, weighted.

“Three years ago I had a normal life. Family. Friends. School. A boyfriend. His name was Nate. I was a normal girl. Things had gotten pretty serious between Nate and myself, and we decided we wanted to take the next step. One afternoon we were in his room ... we hadn’t even really started yet ... and that’s when she walked in on us. His grandmother.”

Sam’s jaw tightened. A faint tremor ran through her voice.

“She was horrified. Frantic. She accused me of ‘defiling’ him. Of using some kind of siren’s call to lead him astray. She wasn’t just screaming.” Sam’s gaze dropped to the floor for a second, then lifted again, glassy and distant. “She had this look. Like she was seeing something behind me that wasn’t there. Then she started going off about how if I wanted to be a seductress so bad, if I wanted to use my body to trap guys, she’d give me a real appetite for it. Some bullshit about making sure I never forgot the price of a man’s desire.”

She shifted her weight, the memory visibly crawling under her skin.

“I didn’t know what she was saying. I didn’t understand what she meant. It all happened so fast. She did some kind of chant. A series of gestures that felt like she was stitching something into the air. Then she pointed a finger straight at my chest and told me that from that moment on, my life would be tied to the very thing she despised. She called it a debt.”

Sam’s voice dropped even lower, rough with the effort of keeping it steady.
