The room smelled like blood and smoke.
Chase pulled his jeans up with shaking hands. The priest lay on the floor, unconscious, bleeding between his legs. Sam stood over him, chest still heaving, knife loose in her grip. The fireplace had gone quiet. Whatever had screamed was gone.
“Sam,” Chase said. His voice was raw. “What did you,”
“It’s over,” she said. She looked at the fire, then at him. “It’s actually over.”
He stared at her. She wiped the knife on her jeans and dropped it back into the bag. Then she pulled out her phone. Her fingers were steady when she dialed.
“There’s a man hurt at the church,” she said when the operator answered. She gave the address. “Back room. He’s bleeding. He needs an ambulance.” She hung up before they could ask her name.
She looked at Chase. “We have to go.”
They left through the side door. The parking lot was empty. They walked fast, not running, until the church was two blocks behind them. Sirens started in the distance. Neither of them looked back.
They caught a bus at the edge of town. It was half full. They sat in the back. Sam’s hands were clean now. She’d washed them in a gas station bathroom before they boarded. Chase hadn’t spoken since they left the church.
An hour in, he finally did.
“You cut him,” he said. Quiet. “You were always going to.”
Sam nodded. She didn’t lie.
“I couldn’t leave it in him,” she said. “Not after everything. Not after what he is. Every three days it would’ve taken him and made him worse. More of what he already was. And not when I knew how to stop it for good.” She looked at him. “I wasn’t going to let it keep going. Not again.”
