The Uber dropped them on the shoulder of a two-lane road thirty minutes outside the city. A hand-painted sign stood at the edge of the gravel lot: Open, Readings, Herbs, Crystals. The building was small, single-story, with wind chimes hanging from the porch eaves and a neon open sign glowing in the front window even though the sun was still up. They walked across the lot. Gravel shifted under their shoes. Sam carried the journal against her chest. Chase kept his hands in his pockets.

A bell rang when they pushed the door open. The air inside smelled like sage and dust. Shelves lined the walls, jars of dried herbs, trays of polished stones, stacks of tarot decks sealed in plastic. An older woman stood behind a glass counter near the back, white hair pulled into a loose bun, cardigan sleeves pushed to her elbows. She looked up and smiled the automatic smile of someone who had greeted a thousand strangers.

“Afternoon,” she said. “See anything you like?”

Sam didn’t browse. She walked straight to the counter and set the journal down, cover facing up.

“We found this,” she said. “Your address was in the back. We were hoping you might know something about it.”

The woman’s smile faded. She stared at the book. Her hand came up slowly and touched the edge of the cover, almost careful.

“Where did you get this?”

“A university library,” Chase said. “Witchcraft section.”

The woman was quiet for a long moment. Her fingers stayed on the journal.

“This was mine,” she said. “Years ago. A work journal. It went missing. I must have dropped it off with a box of other books I was returning to the library. I never realized.” She looked up at them. “I’d like it back. You can take anything in the shop. No charge.”

Sam didn’t move her hands from the book at first. Then she nodded.

“Of course you can have it back,” she said. “We just need to know what was on a page that got torn out. Half of it’s missing. If you can tell us what it said, the journal’s yours.”
