Sam stayed against the cracked mirror. A thin cut ran along her cheekbone where the glass had caught her. Blood welled and slid down toward her jaw. Her jeans were still around her thighs. She was shaking so hard her teeth clicked.

Chase had backed up until his shoulders hit the opposite wall. His hands were up, palms out, like he was afraid of them. Fresh cuts crossed his palms and the sides of his fingers from where he’d grabbed the broken mirror. Blood ran in thin lines down his wrists. His eyes were brown again. Wet. Horrified.

“Sam,” he said. His voice broke. “I don’t, I didn’t mean, I don’t know what happened. I swear I don’t,”

She turned her head slowly. Looked at him. Really looked. The black was gone, but she knew the shape it left behind. She’d seen it in her own reflection enough times. Blood dripped from her chin onto the collar of her shirt.

“Your eyes,” she whispered.

He blinked, confused. “What?”

“They were black.” Her voice was thin, scraped raw. “Just like mine used to be.”

He stared at her. The fun house music still thudded somewhere deeper in the maze, warped and distant. Neither of them moved to fix their clothes. Blood from his hands dripped onto the floor between them.

“It didn’t leave,” she said. The words came out small. “It just ... moved.”

Chase’s face went blank. He shook his head once, hard. The motion made more blood run down his wrist.

“No. We, we did what the page said. It worked. You felt it. You said it was gone.”

“It was gone from me.” She finally pushed off the mirror. Her legs almost buckled. She dragged her underwear and jeans back up with unsteady hands, wincing. The cut on her cheek kept bleeding. “It’s not gone. It’s in you now.”

He opened his mouth. Nothing came out. The mirrors around them kept showing the same thing: him standing there, hands bleeding, wrecked, and her watching him with blood on her face and the kind of understanding that hurt to look at.

Somewhere outside, someone laughed. The sound didn’t belong here.

Sam wiped at her cheek with the back of her hand. It only smeared the blood. Her voice shook.

“We didn’t lift it,” she said. “We transferred it.”

They left the fun house without speaking. Chase kept his bleeding hands shoved in his pockets. Sam held a folded napkin from a food stand against her cheek. The carnival lights felt too bright. Too normal. Neither of them looked at the rides.

The walk back to the dorm was quiet. Chase’s shoulders stayed tight. Every few steps he glanced at her like he was waiting for her to flinch or pull away. She didn’t. When they reached the building she was the one who unlocked the door.

Inside, she went straight to the bathroom and came back with the first-aid kit. She set it on the desk and sat on the edge of the bed. Chase stayed standing, hands still in his pockets, blood drying on his wrists.

“Sit,” she said.
