Chase woke up hard.
It wasn’t unusual. Morning, warm bed, Sam still asleep beside him with her back against his chest. But the want sat heavier than it should have. Focused. He stayed still, breathing through it, until it eased enough that he could slide out of bed without waking her.
By the time she got up he had coffee made. She took the mug with a small smile and leaned against the counter in his t-shirt, bare legs crossed at the ankle. He watched her mouth when she drank. Caught himself. Looked at the floor.
“You sleep okay?” she asked.
“Yeah.” His voice came out lower than he meant. He cleared his throat. “You?”
“Better than I have in a long time.”
They ate leftover diner fries cold from the container and talked about nothing. Every so often his eyes drifted, her throat, the hem of the shirt, the line of her thigh. He pulled them back each time. Sam noticed once. She tilted her head, studying him.
“You good?”
“Yeah,” he said. “Just tired.”
She accepted it. They spent the morning the same way they had the day before, easy, close, ordinary. He kept his hands to himself. Mostly.
In the afternoon they walked to the student union to check mail that wasn’t there. On the way back his hand brushed the small of her back and stayed. Not guiding. Just resting, fingers spread. Sam glanced at him. He moved his hand like he’d only just realized it was there. She didn’t say anything. The touch had felt different. Heavier. She let it go.
They were cutting across the quad when they saw the flyers. A carnival on the edge of town, one night only. Rides, games, fried food. Sam stopped in front of one taped to a lamppost.
“We should go,” she said. “Tonight. Before it’s gone.”
Chase looked at the bright, cheap colors and felt the low warmth under his ribs stir. He nodded anyway.
“Yeah. Okay.”
They went back to the dorm to change. He stood in the doorway of the bathroom while she brushed her hair and watched the way her shirt pulled across her chest when she lifted her arms. His mouth was dry. He turned away before she could see his face in the mirror.
The carnival was loud and bright and smelled like sugar and oil. They rode the Ferris wheel. Sam laughed when it stopped at the top and the car rocked. Chase’s hand found her knee and stayed there, thumb moving once, slow. She looked at him. He smiled like nothing was wrong. She smiled back, smaller.
They were walking between the ring toss and the food stands when his hand slid lower. It wasn’t an accident. His palm settled on her butt and squeezed, fingers pressing in, holding for a second before he seemed to realize what he’d done. He pulled back like he’d touched something hot.
Sam glanced at him, a small surprised sound leaving her.
“Okay,” she said, half-laughing. “Hi.”
Chase’s ears went red. He rubbed the back of his neck.
“Sorry. That was,”
“It’s fine,” she said. She bumped his arm with hers, still smiling a little. “Just didn’t expect it. You’re usually not that bold.”
He nodded, still flushed. She didn’t make a thing of it. It was strange coming from him, but not unwelcome. They kept walking.
They played a ring toss game he was bad at. She won a small stuffed bear and made him carry it. He did. Every time she leaned into him or took his hand the warmth under his ribs flared, sharp and wanting. He kept his breathing even. Kept his eyes forward. She was having a good time. He wasn’t going to ruin it.
They were walking past the fun house when she stopped.
“Last one?” she said, nodding at the crooked entrance. Painted clown faces. A dark doorway. Music playing too loud from inside.
