It was a Wednesday night.
Michael found her on the couch with a cool washcloth over her eyes and the living room lights dimmed. Elena kept her voice soft and told him the migraine had come on suddenly. He sat on the edge of the cushion, one large hand resting on her knee, and asked if she wanted him to stay home from the midweek service. She told him no. The church needed him. He brought her a glass of water, set it on the coffee table, and bowed his head to pray briefly for her healing. Elena kept her eyes closed under the washcloth and listened to the familiar cadence of his voice. When he finished, he kissed her forehead and told her to rest. She waited until the sound of his truck faded down the street before she sat up.
The house felt different once he was gone. Elena walked into the bedroom and stood in front of the full-length mirror. She stripped out of the soft clothes she had worn for the migraine performance and let them fall to the floor of the room she shared with her husband. Naked, she studied her reflection—mid-thirties, 5’8”, 135 pounds, firm 34D breasts, long red hair. The sight of her own bare skin in this familiar space made her pulse jump. She pulled the simple black dress from the back of the closet and stepped into it. No bra. No panties. The fabric clung to her body as she smoothed it down. She looked at herself one more time, then turned off the light and left the house.
The drive to Riverbend took thirty-one minutes. She had gone to bars the first two times. Tonight she chose something else. The thought had started as a flicker and hardened into intention somewhere between the second and third mile. She was no longer only chasing the physical release. She was testing the edges of the life she already lived. The large evangelical church on the edge of town had a Wednesday service that started at seven. Elena parked at the far end of the lot and walked inside.
The sanctuary was bright and full. Amplified worship music filled the room. Hands were raised. Stage lights washed over the platform. Elena sat in the last row, red hair down, legs crossed then uncrossed so the dress rode up against her bare skin. She didn’t sing. She watched the room and felt completely detached from everything happening around her. Halfway through the sermon a man two rows ahead kept glancing back. He was in his late thirties, clean-cut, button-down with the sleeves rolled once. Their eyes met over the tops of the pews. He looked down at his open Bible, then back at her. The look held. Elena didn’t look away.
When the service ended he waited by the side door. They stepped outside under the floodlights of the parking lot. The night air was cool against her legs.
“First time here?” he asked.
“Just visiting,” Elena said.
They talked for several minutes. His name was Ryan. He was married. His wife was home with their kids. Elena told him she was in town for the night and had no plans. He mentioned coffee. She looked at the way his eyes kept dropping to the neckline of her dress, then said she would rather get a room. Ryan went still. For a second he only stared at her. Then he nodded, once, and told her to follow him.
